Chapter 35: The Scarecrow's Ambition (2)
.
We went back and forth trying to read each other's minds, and it was evident that if someone with the Magic Perception skill were to observe our magic wavelengths, they would see them silently attempting to penetrate each other.
Kakashi's mastery of magic was no laughing matter, even though his understanding of it didn't extend beyond chakras.
And, that's when we both heard it.
"Halt, Both of you!"
As our magic senses flickered, a rough voice grabbed our attention. We turned to see two guys in fancy purple Samurai outfits. They looked pretty unfriendly, which bugged me. It was obvious they were part of the shogunate. He had a Katana on his hip, while his subordinate held a polearm.
It was kind of annoying. These guys acted all high and mighty, but one stupid thing stood out: the leader put his Katana in the sheath the wrong way.
Most of the samurai with Katanas did so in this world.
A katana has a single sharp edge that should face up when sheathed. If the blade is placed edge-down, gravity can pull on it, dulling the sharpness and damaging the blade. This setup also makes it impossible to properly use iaijutsu, so sheathing it like that is kind of useless.
I guess if you use the katana that way, it might seem a lot "cooler", like how you see it in cartoons and sometimes anime. But these guys... they seemed like amateurs when they couldn't even get something so basic right.
"Hey, you with the mask! Our report suggests you've been hanging around the members of the resistances!" The leader, with a Katana secured at his side, gestured towards Kakashi.
I raised an eyebrow and shot a look at Kakashi, silently asking him, "What did you do?" He glanced back at me, and through magical wavelengths, the Great Sage conveyed his message: "We met someone who gave us fake vision. I'll handle it, so stay calm." Then, Kakashi stepped forward and greeted the two men with a smile.
"Ah, the shogunates! I was just on my way to deliver this," he said, presenting a purple gemstone that bore a striking resemblance to an Electro Vision.
The leader eyed him with a smirk. "Heh, you expect me to believe people like you hand these over willingly?" His suspicion was palpable, and I realized that avoiding trouble was out of the question.
"You think I can't tell they're fakes?" he sneered, his expression shifting to one of triumph. Then, revealing his true intentions, he continued, "But of course, buddy, you look well-off. We can work something out for a few moras..."
Well, Kakashi tried.
"Well, I've tried..." (Kakashi)
Exactly my point.
*Crack*
With a sharp crack, the fake vission crumbles under his firm hold.
*Swirl*
A sudden shift, like the dance of winds, but it's the rain altering its course. The wannabe samurai's expression changes, eyes widening in surprise. Then, as if by magic, raindrops shimmer in the night air, casting a radiant glow.
A kunai, vibrant blue, finds its place in Kakashi's hand. It becomes clear: Kakashi has achieved his ambition. He has acquired the Hydro Vision.
And then...
*Chirp*
The sound of chirping birds...
Kakashi's lightning emerges on the already blue kunai.

"Hydro Vision huh... How fitting." I spoke that aloud as I looked at two of our assailants burnt to crisp despite the heavy rain. They passed out, but I can still find signs of life in them.
"You think so? Then that's all the more reason to leave me alone, right?" The chirping energy in Kakashi's hand faded, leaving only the glowing blue kunai of the Hydro Vision. Slowly, that too vanished. Kakashi hadn't just mastered it; he could shape it into any weapon he wanted.
"...Are you truly asking to be comrades?" Honestly, I was skeptical. This paranoia is what guided me through my veteran days, I know Kakashi understood that too. I would've trust him more if I never caused Kakashi to defect.
But this was Kakashi Hatake—the same Kakashi I convinced to defect from his beloved village, who took on Itachi's role because of me. He must have lingering grudges. Humans are like that. The day he stabs me in the back might not be far off.
"I like my current situation," Kakashi suddenly stated, interrupting my racing thoughts. Instead of answering my question, he reached into his pouch and showed me his Vision.
"I was able to prevent the destruction of the Uchiha clan, I killed Danzo, and I'm making progress infiltrating the Akatsuki." The blue Vision in his hand radiated brightly, unlike the fake Vision he had shown before. This one pulsed like a heartbeat, glowing bright and dim in a steady rhythm.
"Obviously, Sensei and Obito would probably snap at me, saying I should've stayed in the village. Rin too, and almost everyone I've met, would say the same. But don't you think it's a small price to pay?"
...Ah. I see now.
Reading people's minds had become second nature to me, to the point where I couldn't rely on actual trust. Even without that ability, I would still be excessively paranoid of their underlying thoughts.
"Yes, I am asking to be your ally. I don't mind you reading my thoughts... ✨but could you keep a straight face if I was reading Icha-Icha Paradise while you did~~✨?" Suddenly, his usual closed-eye smile turned into a wide, goofy grin under his mask. Even without seeing it, I could feel it. Somehow, it made a vein throb on my forehead.
"Y-you! Fine, keep your occlumency. But if you ever stab me in the back, I will kill you!" My face warmed for a second. Now that he mentioned it, I really didn't want to know what he was thinking while reading that stupid book. I turned around and headed back to our camp, trying to push him out of my thoughts.
In response to my threat, while following my tracks, his mischievous grin grew wider under his mask. He pulled out his iconic orange book and let out a soft laugh. "Fufu, no need to be so shy~ Here, my mind's open. Just know I'll be reading some books~!"
"Just die, you."
