Chapter 13: CHAPTER 13
As Niikaz stared at Takuzo, something dawned on her. Her eyes widened as she caught sight of Takuzo's weapon.
(Wait a second… wasn't he supposed to be carrying a bat in the original story? Why is he holding a long metal staff?!)
"Umm… excuse me, is there something wrong?" Takuzo asked, noticing Niikaz's intense gaze fixed on him.
"Hm? No… it's nothing," she answered softly, quickly averting her eyes.
"Niikaz, are you okay? You're frowning," Kazu whispered, concern evident in his voice.
She turned to face him, meeting his worried expression. For a moment, she felt something soften inside her.
"What? Are you worried about me? How sweet~," Niikaz teased, flashing him a mischievous grin.
"Ah-hah," Kazu chuckled awkwardly, scratching the back of his head.
"What about you? Aren't you tired? That box looks heavy."
"Hmm? Really? I don't think it's that heavy," Kazu replied, glancing down at the box of bread.
"Wow! You've been carrying that thing all this time, and it weighs around 10kg," Niikaz remarked, genuinely impressed.
"10kg?" Kazu tilted his head in confusion, clearly not feeling the weight.
Before their conversation could go any further, a loud noise erupted from below. Niikaz's eyes darted toward the source and saw Takashi standing among the undead.
(Ah, that looks like he just threw his shoe to distract them.)
Hisashi and Rei were already at the main door, opening it quietly to avoid attracting attention. One by one, the others began moving outside, carefully slipping through the door without making a sound.
Takuzo hurried down the stairs, his long staff wobbling dangerously as it came close to hitting the railing. Just an inch away from making a noise, Niikaz swiftly grabbed the staff and lifted it clear of the metal.
"Careful. You almost made a noise," Niikaz warned in a low voice.
"I'm sorry… I'm really sorry," Takuzo stammered, flustered.
"It's fine. Just keep going and be careful with your staff." He nodded quickly and continued moving, more cautious this time.
Once everyone had made it outside, they came to a stop, faces tight with worry. The path ahead was completely blocked by undead, crawling around the building, leaving them no clear way through.
"Now what?" Hisashi muttered, clearly at a loss.
"Tch," Takashi gritted his teeth, frustration flashing in his eyes.
Just as he was about to step forward, Niikaz grabbed his arm, stopping him in his tracks.
"Wait! Let me handle this," she said firmly. "You and Rei, close the gate behind us—slowly."
"Takuzo, Hisashi! I'm going to need your stuff," Niikaz added.
"What are you planning, Niikaz?" Takagi asked, her voice filled with curiosity.
"I don't have time to explain. Just watch," Niikaz replied, glancing at Hisashi and Takuzo.
Without hesitation, they handed over their weapons, sensing the seriousness in her tone. Niikaz took the metal stick and Takuzo's staff, walking toward the gate as Rei and Takashi carefully closed it behind her.
Sliding the long staff between the gate's handles, Niikaz's palms began to glow faintly. The light was absorbed into the staff, spreading through the gate.
(With this, the gate won't be broken through, and I've added soundproofing too.)
"Takagi-san, which way to the parking lot?" Niikaz asked.
"It's around that corner. You'll reach it soon, but what are you—" Takagi stopped herself mid-sentence as she realized what Niikaz was planning. A look of admiration flashed across her face. (She really is a genius…)
"Everyone, after I give the signal, run quietly to the parking lot and don't stop, understood?" Niikaz's voice was calm but commanding.
She lifted the metal stick higher, preparing to throw it in the opposite direction. Channeling all her strength, she hurled it far, where it crashed into a parked car with a loud bang.
The noise echoed through the area, immediately drawing the attention of the undead. They turned and began shambling toward the sound.
"Go!" Niikaz whispered urgently. Takashi led the group as they dashed silently toward the parking lot, their movements quick and deliberate. Within moments, they reached the minibus.
"Sensei, the key!" Takashi called out.
"Ah, yes!" Marikawa fumbled for the keys, unlocking the door before climbing into the driver's seat.
Okada, Kazu, Niikaz, Takuzo, Naomi, Takagi, and Hirano all piled inside safely.
"Target? Check. Public safety? Check. Ready to rock and roll!" Hirano joked, sliding open the window, clearly enjoying the tense situation.
"Oh, shut up already!" Takagi snapped, irritated.
"They're all in, Takashi!" Hisashi called through the window.
"Saeko-san, Rei, get in first," Takashi ordered, smashing the skull of an approaching undead.
"Urgh, this isn't like my car!" Marikawa muttered, struggling to familiarize herself with the bus controls.
"Sensei, hurry!" Okada shouted, watching as Takashi climbed into the bus.
Just as Takashi was about to close the door, he heard a voice calling out to him.
"Wait! Wait for us!" A student's voice echoed through the chaos.
"Who's that?" Takashi asked, squinting at the figures running toward them.
"That's Shido. He teaches 3-A," Saeko answered coldly.
Rei and Hisashi immediately tensed up, their expressions darkening at the mention of the name.
"We're ready to go!" Marikawa announced, her hands on the clutch.
"No, Sensei, hold on a bit," Takashi urged.
"I can't drive with all of them bunched up like this!" Marikawa replied, her voice tight with anxiety.
"Can't you just run them over?" Takashi asked, desperate.
"If we do that with this bus, we'll roll over!" Takagi snapped back.
"Takashi! Don't save him!" Rei grabbed Takashi's arm, her grip firm. "You can't save that man."
"Why not?"
"I agree with Rei," Hisashi growled, clenching his fists. "Shido is the worst kind of human being. I'm perfectly fine leaving him to die."
Takashi's eyes widened. Hisashi was rarely this upset, and the fact that he was so angry meant Shido must be a truly despicable person.
"Ah! Nishinoya! Kazu, look! It's Nishinoya!" Okada exclaimed, waving toward the window. "I'm glad he's safe."
Kazu quickly set the box of bread on a nearby seat and looked out the window. Niikaz, sitting in the front, caught sight of Nishinoya as well, running toward the bus with Shido's group.
(I see… so the villain has appeared. But wait… that's Nishinoya! I'm glad he's still alive. Hm? Wait… why is he at the back?!)
Suddenly, Niikaz's eyes narrowed in alarm. Nishinoya was the last person in the group, dangerously far behind. Without hesitation, she jumped up from her seat and sprinted out of the bus.
"Niikaz! Where are you going?" Kazu shouted.
"Oi, Niikaz!" Takashi called after her, but she didn't stop.
Ignoring their calls, Niikaz sprinted toward Nishinoya, her heart pounding in her chest.
