I'm Not A Master, I'm A Director (Creating Fate Movie In Nasuverse)

Chapter 94: Chapter 96: Shinji: This Has Nothing to Do with Me; It’s All Nasu’s Fault!

Tsuburaya Productions' tokusatsu shows boasted high production quality, excelling in script arrangement, set design, and combat effects, far surpassing other tokusatsu shows of the same period.

Look at Toei's Rider series next door; you could see white edges from their green screen work.

Such issues were impossible in the Ultraman series.

However, this high level of production required substantial funding.

Tsuburaya had a bad habit of investing all the earnings from one project into the next. This meant that if a show didn't perform well, Tsuburaya would face hard times.

Hence, the frugal Toei has been doing well and even became the second biggest player in the Japanese film industry, while Tsuburaya continued to struggle, eventually failing to keep their company.

Tsuburaya is a giant in production but a child in business.

This statement perfectly encapsulates the company.

But Tsuburaya is not entirely innocent for ending up in this situation. Internal issues have plagued the company continuously.

Incidents of sexual harassment by the president, corruption on the sets, and various workplace problems led Tsuburaya to run a massive truck with a lawnmower engine.

It was inevitable that something would go wrong!

TYO set a trap for Tsuburaya, and while Shinji's partnership with Bandai reduced Tsuburaya's income, the internal issues were the real problem. Tsuburaya wouldn't have ended up like this without them.

There's a reason for the misfortune of pitiable people.

"Keep gathering information on Tsuburaya," Shinji instructed Ophelia. "I need to stay updated."

Shinji had plans to acquire Tsuburaya but wasn't ready to make a move just yet.

Striking now would save money, but those stubborn old men at Tsuburaya wouldn't appreciate Shinji's intervention.

The old guard at Tsuburaya are notorious for not learning their lessons. If this crisis is resolved easily, they'll surely mess up again.

Moreover, Tsuburaya's internal problems are severe and require drastic measures.

Shinji had no interest in taking over a problem-ridden company that would require extensive management efforts.

He was busy and couldn't afford to invest a lot of time and energy in Tsuburaya just for personal interest or tokusatsu nostalgia.

So, Shinji would wait until Tsuburaya was at its most desperate, then swoop in as a savior, cleaning the house thoroughly.

Not only the internal issues but also the external copyright disputes needed quick resolution.

Shinji didn't want to drag on the Showa-era Ultraman copyright issues until the company was on the brink of collapse.

The tokusatsu market in Japan isn't large, and to ensure profitability, market expansion is necessary. For Tsuburaya to expand overseas, the Showa-era Ultraman copyrights must be sorted out.

Shinji had decided that this time, he would correct all of Tsuburaya's mistakes and bad habits.

So, until the right time came, Shinji would patiently wait.

— — — — —

In the dimly lit room, it was unusually quiet. The cameraman and staff huddled in the farthest corner, the camera lens focused on Shinji.

At this moment, Shinji was pinning Sakura to the bed, his face twisted in madness, like a lustful boar.

He tore at his shirt wildly while choking Sakura.

Then—

A sharp black ribbon pierced through Shinji's head.

"Cut!"

Kariya, the assistant director in name, called for a stop. He hesitantly looked at the monitor, using a very uncertain tone to confirm, "This one should be good, right?"

"Hold on, let me take a look."

Shinji hurriedly got off the bed and stumbled over to the monitor to check the footage.

"It's decent. Let's go with this take."

Shinji stepped back and sat down in a chair.

The makeup artist quickly came forward to touch up his makeup, while another female makeup artist approached Sakura, who was still sitting on the bed.

"You did well, Sakura. Although your performance could use a bit more polish, you're still my sister after all." Shinji gave her a thumbs-up.

Shinji was quite lenient with his sister; as long as her performance wasn't terrible, he would praise her.

Sakura's acting couldn't compare to professional actors, but for an ordinary girl, her performance was quite commendable.

When the character was quiet, she had a kind of pitiful quality that moved people; and when the character turned dark...

Ahem.

In short, just like the inherent duality of the character "Matou Sakura," Sakura's own multifaceted personality allowed her to handle the role with ease.

However, Shinji would never tell Sakura this. He didn't want his dinner to turn into Crest Worm sashimi, and without soy sauce at that.

"Hmph, you say that, but it's all talk."

Leaning against the bed, Sakura played with her feet and complained, "You say I'm the heroine in HF, but is there any heroine as miserable as me?! My treatment is far worse than that of Miss Saber and Rin-senpai!"

Think about it: the other two versions of the heroine—one is the majestic King of Knights, and the other is the dashing close-combat magi. How did it turn out like this for her?

"Onii-sama, am I really your sister?"

Sakura squinted her eyes and teased.

Shinji retorted, "Of course you are. When you used to take my allowance as a kid, did I ever complain? If I weren't your brother, would I spoil you like this?"

"Then why did you make my character like this?!" Sakura demanded angrily.

"It's the script's requirement~"

Shinji's eyes darted around evasively.

Shinji didn't want to take the blame for the character's setup; it was clearly the fault of that mushroom writer.

In recent years of studying film production, Shinji has meticulously reviewed several of Nasu's major works and discovered that Nasu heavily relies on character templates.

The first heroine is always a somewhat naive and socially detached character, be it Arturia, Shiki Ryougi, or Aoko.

Next, the second heroine is invariably a militaristic, knowledgeable guide. Typical examples include Rin, and others like Touko-senpai, and Arcueid fall into similar roles.

The third heroine is consistently a tormented, tragic figure. Asagami Fujino, Kohaku, and his own sister Sakura all fit this mold.

There's often a fourth heroine, whose presence is somewhat ambiguous and who is typically positioned as a sister but not entirely so—characters Illya fit this description.

Thus, Shinji could swear by the light bulb over his head that his sister's misfortunes were entirely Nasu's fault. Unfortunately, this was not something he could easily say.

He could only vaguely explain, "It's not up to me. I just set up a script for the third heroine, and it just so happened that the third heroine turned out to be you, Sakura."

Sakura raised an eyebrow. "Oh really? So, in your eyes, your sister is a dangerous, deceitful person who would go to such lengths against you?"

"Cough, cough!"

Shinji coughed forcefully, glancing at the surrounding crew members, signaling Sakura not to overdo it. However, it was to no avail.

Ever since the main plotline of HF started filming and Sakura got hold of the entire script, the conflicts between the siblings over the script had been ongoing, and the rest of the crew had long become accustomed to it.

"Alright, let's give the siblings some space."

Kariya chuckled, preparing to lead the rest of the crew out of the room.

Thump!

Shinji kicked his uncle.

"Don't gloat over there!"

Throughout this, Shirou Emiya sat quietly in a chair, not saying a word, fearing he might get caught up in the conflict between Sakura and Shinji.

He knew this pair of siblings too well; when they were down, they always turned their frustrations onto others.

The scenes being filmed recently were quite bizarre, and Shirou didn't want to get hurt over a small misunderstanding.

Currently, Shinji was filming scenes of Sakura's inhuman treatment in the Matou household.

These were among the more explicit scenes in the HF route, not only featuring the scene where Shinji tries and fails to assault Sakura, ending with his head being blown off, but also several nearly R-rated scenes.

However, Shinji was strict about one thing while filming this content: no nudity.

Even though this would eventually be rated R, Shinji didn't want to invite trouble, especially since Sakura was his sister. This could be exploited by those with ill intentions.

Thus, Sakura's torture at the Matou household involved things like bugs crawling all over her body, resembling sinister dark magic, and the only physically related scene was Shinji's failed attempt at assault, resulting in his head being blown off.

The HF route's R rating was more about the graphic violence and dark storyline, rather than what people might expect.

Still, for an HBO series, Shinji felt obliged to include some nudity. Hence, he hired professional body doubles for a few incidental nude scenes, such as women attacked by Zouken, and other such instances.

After all, during Crest Worm attacks, clothing would naturally tear apart, making these nude scenes blend in seamlessly and naturally.

"Why am I such a horrendous person in all of your movies, is this how you see your grandpa huh!?"

After hearing Shinji's explanation, Zouken's cane came down hard.

"Serves you right."

Arturia, watching from the side, commented, "Master is getting what he deserves."

Rin sneered, "This guy always likes to focus on the dark side of humanity. Which character in his films has had a good ending?"

In the two series he's filmed so far, Shinji has made three versions of FSN and one Fate/Zero, yet none of the characters ended well.

Some characters might have done well in one version of FSN but met tragic ends in another.

Even Rin herself had been portrayed harshly by Shinji, either killed or paralyzed.

Of course, if Shinji hadn't first targeted himself, actively self-deprecating his imagee, it might not have been so easy for others to accept his scripts.

"If we're talking about characters with decent endings in all three routes..."

Sakura suddenly turned her gaze to Rin.

Realizing something, Arturia also looked over.

"Wha–what's wrong?"

Rin felt uneasy.

Rin felt something was off.

Arturia explained, "Rin, isn't it true that you're the only character who has a good ending in all three Fate routes? Maybe Master likes you?"

"..."

"Rin-senpai." Sakura patted Rin's shoulder. "When filming the UBW scene where you get kidnapped, be extra careful. I'm afraid Onii-sama might do something inappropriate."
