Chapter 24 - Alec Has It Tough
From Rud’s perspective, it wasn’t particularly real.
Suddenly, the Celestial Deity appeared and declared that he was now a champion, giving him a revelation to defeat evil in the face of approaching calamity.
And he was bestowed with the light spear that champions could use, which was indeed an incredibly powerful weapon.
There was no particular reason to doubt, and it wasn’t strange even if he had become a champion.
He had proven his strength by becoming a gold-rank adventurer in 10 years,
and it was plausible for a champion to be born in Marlen, where legends said descendants of the Celestial Deity had lived for generations.
“It’s really troublesome that we have to go all the way to Infula.”
The route Rud’s group was taking was quite different from Yona’s group.
Crossing the Insturia Mountains would be the fastest, but it’s too dangerous.
It might not be a problem for Rud alone, but taking Saint Bigrind across carried some risk.
Moreover, as a group setting out to receive proof of being the champion and saint, they had quite a number of escorts, so it was right to avoid the land route.
“So we’re going by ship, is that what you’re saying?”
“Yes.”
Bigrind nodded to Rud.
Then her snow-white finger traced their route on the map.
“We’ll go to the northernmost port of the Lukasia Kingdom… cross the Bitia Strait to the Plavus Sea, the Alter Sea… and dock at the Grand Duchy of Kapatia.”
“It should be smooth sailing from there.”
“Yes.”
Rud didn’t know the geography of this northern continent well.
He left all the details about how to move to Bigrind, and even Bigrind wasn’t well-versed in geography, so she had received an explanation of the route from the church’s pilgrimage coordinator.
The number of people to move, the burden to bear, the dangers to avoid.
This was the result after considering and calculating all these factors.
“It’s more roundabout than going by land, but considering the number of people moving, going by ship is more stable. And if we think about having to cross the Insturia Mountains by land, it won’t be that slow either.”
“Is that so? Then let’s do that.”
Bigrind glanced at Rud, who nodded refreshingly.
The man who became the champion, Rud.
But when talking with him, she felt something unsettling.
Isn’t the champion called the savior of humanity?
But is this man really someone who can be called a savior?
“We’re leaving tomorrow, right?”
“Yes.”
Bigrind nodded slightly.
Still, he must be the champion.
Seeing how easily he dealt with that terrifying demon, he must undoubtedly be the champion.
“Then rest well, Saint.”
“I hope you have a peaceful night too, Champion.”
Rud bowed his head and left the room.
Only after confirming that Rud had completely closed the door did Bigrind sit on the bed with a small sigh.
She wasn’t particularly happy, if asked.
Rather than being happy, she felt nothing at all.
After the Day of Judgment, she became a priest, and her divine power was far superior compared to her peer priests.
Being outstanding and excellent, she soon stood out, and being pure and righteous, she quickly rose to the position of purification priest.
“Huu…”
And now Bigrind had reached the end of priesthood, called the Pope for male priests and Saint for female priests.
That wasn’t particularly joyful—
Bigrind got up from the bed she was sitting on and took off her veil.
She hung the removed veil on a hanger and untied the waistband of her ceremonial robe, folding it neatly and placing it on the bedside table.
She carefully took off the ceremonial robe that was now flowing loosely with the waistband undone, hung it on a wooden hanger so it wouldn’t wrinkle, and placed that on the hanger as well.
“I’m going to take a bath.”
Yes.
A small voice was heard from beyond the wooden door separating the room, not the entrance.
She had moved rooms immediately after receiving the revelation.
From the small single room she had been staying in, she moved to this detached house with a bathroom and toilet.
She even got three attendants to serve her, making her really feel like she had become a noble body.
‘I didn’t expect to feel it in this way.’
Soon, upon receiving word that the bath was ready, Bigrind entered the bathroom wearing thin clothes.
Water, steaming hot, gushed from the mouth of a lion head carved on the wall, filling the bathtub, and after the attendants lightly washed Bigrind’s body before bathing, she slowly entered the tub and laid down.
‘Champion, Saint, Demon King…’
None of it felt real.
Especially the last word, Demon King.
It didn’t feel real to the point where she wondered if it was really true.
‘…And, Yona.’
Rather, didn’t the champion treat Yona as if she were the saint?
Didn’t he try to take Yona, not Bigrind, when killing that demon?
Grind…
Bigrind gritted her teeth.
With her eyes tightly closed and teeth clenched, a sharp pain welled up.
‘Always you, always… in that way to me…’
Her divine power wasn’t that great either.
In terms of divine power alone, she wasn’t even half of Bigrind’s.
In terms of utilization ability, Bigrind was much better than Yona.
But there were always many people around Yona.
A person who laughs well, is cheerful, and gets along well with those around her.
If Bigrind was described as a flower that seemed elegant and full of dignity but had thorns,
Yona was described as beautiful, graceful, and even fragrant, but blooming in a roadside flower bed, not rejecting anyone’s touch.
Didn’t even Sister Eije say that if Yona became a priest, the church could become more familiar to people?
—Even though it was overheard.
However, Yona became a healer and Bigrind became a priest, and ultimately became a saint.
A saint, such an existence that all believers should look up to and revere.
And even the champion, who should have the closest relationship with the saint, was distracted by Yona.
‘Annoying wench…’
She couldn’t forget Yona’s face, laughing it off even when she became a healer.
She couldn’t forget Yona’s face, saying that being a healer was also a good job without a hint of jealousy, even when they were divided into priest and healer.
She cupped her hands and scooped up water.
No matter how tightly she pressed her palms together, water trickled through the gaps that formed.
The falling water dropped into the bathtub, spreading ripples.
Circular, circular.
The ripples grew and spread.
“Bad woman.”
…Yes, you’re bad.
You who suddenly appeared and shone brighter than me—
“I really hate…”
“Achoo!”
“Did you catch a cold?”
“What cold…”
Yona said this but moved closer to the campfire.
Alec threw a couple more pieces of wood in front of Yona and stood up to pour water into a canteen and hang it over the campfire.
“You’re used to camping like this, right?”
“Yeah. I’m used to it.”
Yona sniffled and nodded to Kairoc.
This was their first night.
The first night heading towards the mage community after leaving Evian.
Alec prepared two rabbits they had caught, Yona skewered them and hung them over the campfire.
And Kairoc ground the rock salt stone and seasoned them.
The roasted rabbit made by these three tasted quite good.
“But what was that stone earlier? It tasted much better than just roasted meat. I was a bit surprised.”
Yona asked Kairoc after wiping her nose with the cloth piece Alec handed her.
She remembered seeing him rubbing that vigorously, which she recalled buying at Henson’s General Store.
“It’s called rock salt. Think of it as a salt stone. It adds a bit of flavor when roasting meat.”
“Ah, so that’s rock salt?”
It was in Yona’s memory.
Although not in that stone form, she knew that there was something called rock salt.
“The taste changes a lot just with some salt seasoning.”
“That’s because we don’t usually carry things like this around.”
Is this what makes someone a silver-rank adventurer?
Yona was newly impressed by Kairoc.
“Here.”
“Oh, okay.”
Light steam was rising from the wooden cup Alec handed over.
Not too hot, but just warm enough, just right for gulping down.
“Ah, that’s nice.”
“The nights are still cold, after all.”
Alec replied while pouring water into his own cup and drinking.
Kairoc refused, saying he didn’t need such things.
“There should be a village tomorrow.”
“A village?”
“Yeah. It’s the edge of the Lukasia Mountains, you know. These places are good for hunting too. There are quite a few beasts around.”
“Oh…”
“It’s going to be a long journey. When there’s a village, we should rest for a day each time to conserve energy. Once we enter the Insturia Mountains, there won’t be any villages, so we need to manage our energy well. Got it, Alec?”
“…Why are you asking Alec?”
Kairoc was suddenly asking Alec, even though Yona herself would be the one with the biggest energy problem.
And Alec even nodded as if he understood.
“If Yona collapses, you’ll have to carry her, won’t you?”
“I won’t collapse, you know?”
“Well, that remains to be seen.”
The campfire light flickered and danced.
Sparks flew aimlessly, and somewhere, the long howl of a beast could be heard.
“We’re going to the community first, right?”
“That’s the plan.”
Yona finished drinking the hot water and put down the cup.
She waved her hand to Alec, who was trying to pour more water, saying it was enough, and spoke to Kairoc.
“Whatever happens, the community is the priority. I need to either return to my original world or return to being a man, one of the two.”
At those words, Kairoc let out a long sigh.
“Alec, you’re going to have a tough time.”
Kairoc chuckled.
