Chapter 1284: Cynthia and Purple Potential Pokémon
The day after Yuga and Dawn arrived at Undella Town, Cynthia, along with Ash and his group, also arrived here. Ash was very surprised to see Yuga and Dawn.
"Yuga, Dawn, what are you doing here?"
Yuga smiled and replied, "Didn't Cynthia tell you we'd be here?"
"I was planning to surprise Ash!" Cynthia said, cracking a rare joke.
After some pleasantries, Ash introduced his travel companions from the Unova region, Iris and Cilan, to Yuga and Dawn.
Iris was extremely interested in Yuga and Dawn, bombarding them with questions, while Yuga seemed a bit distracted. He had sensed the presence of Legendary Aura around Ash and his companions.
After spending so much time around Legendary Pokémon, Yuga had become highly sensitive to Legendary Pokemon Aura.
Yuga was certain that the Legendary Aura presence must belong to Meloetta, who had somehow coincidentally ended up following Ash around.
"Mr. Shimizu is a very skilled trainer, right? Who's stronger, you or Miss Cynthia?" Iris asked, her face full of curiosity.
Cilan immediately warned Iris, saying, "Iris, don't ask such impolite questions!"
But Cynthia just smiled and replied, "Actually, I might not be as strong as Yuga right now." Although it had been a while since she battled Yuga, she was well aware of his strength.
"Really? But Miss Cynthia, aren't you the Champion?" Iris asked, surprised. Cilan also looked shocked, but Ash and Dawn weren't at all surprised.
At that moment, Cynthia suddenly turned to Yuga and said, "How about we do a battle? I'd like to show you how these two kids have grown." She shook two Poké Balls in front of Yuga.
When Yuga saw the Poké Balls Cynthia held, he immediately knew who she meant. One was a Lampent she'd purchased from YoYo Day Care, and the other was a Piplup Yuga had helped get from her clan.
Of course, by now, both the Lampent and Piplup were likely evolved into their final forms.
"Sure, I've been meaning to see how far those little guys have come!" Yuga replied.
"Yay! We get to see a battle between Yuga and Miss Cynthia!" Ash was the happiest to hear this news.
"Then come with me," Cynthia said as she stood up from the couch and led Yuga and the others to the battle arena in the house.
As the Champion, there was no way Cynthia's house wouldn't have a battle arena!
Once they reached the arena, Ash, Dawn, Iris, and Cilan took their seats in the spectator area, while Yuga and Cynthia stood on opposite sides of the arena.
"Is it alright if Jamiel be the referee?" Cynthia asked Yuga.
"Of course," Yuga nodded.
Jamiel, hearing this, walked to the referee area and bowed, saying, "I'm honored to be the referee for Miss Cynthia and Mr. Shimizu."
Cynthia nodded and then turned to Yuga. "Shall we go by the rules for a Double Battle?"
"Of course," Yuga replied.
Cynthia then threw two Poké Balls, releasing her Pokémon onto the field: a Chandelure and an Empoleon.

After seeing the two Pokémon Cynthia had sent out, Yuga was surprised and looked at her. The Chandelure had actually become a Pokémon with Purple potential! He distinctly remembered selling it to Cynthia when it had Indigo potential.
In just a few years, both Pokémon had become Elite level Pokémon. The Purple potential Chandelure was now at a lower level than the Indigo potential Empoleon. Yuga suspected that the Chandelure's transformation into a Purple potential Pokémon had only recently occurred.
It wasn't just Yuga who experienced strange encounters; others had them too—Steven had, and Cynthia had as well.
Yuga had more opportunities to communicate with Steven and had already discovered that Steven's Metagross had become a Purple potential Pokémon, but Steven had never mentioned it, and Yuga hadn't pried.
He hadn't told Steven which of his Pokémon had Purple potential either. Such things were not to be shared carelessly, as long as one had common sense.
However, for a Pokémon to transform into a Purple potential Pokémon, it required the help of a Legendary Pokémon.
A Legendary Pokémon assisting an ordinary Pokémon in evolving its potential consumes a certain amount of its origin energy. It wasn't something that could happen just by chance; otherwise, Purple potential Pokémon would be everywhere.
For example, Yuga's Charizard evolved into a Purple potential Pokémon with the help of Moltres' Heart, meaning that Moltres' origin energy must be contained within its Heart, and in considerable amounts.
However, for a Tier 2 Legendary Pokemon like Moltres to assist an ordinary Pokémon in evolving into a Purple potential Pokémon was far more difficult than for a Tier 1 Legendary Pokémon or Mythical Pokémon.
The origin energy of a Pokémon, whether ordinary Pokémon or Legendary Pokémon, was extremely important. Excessive consumption could either halt the Pokémon's power growth or put its life in danger.
Most Legendary Pokémon wouldn't easily help, otherwise, Yuga, with Mewtwo and Cosmoem, could easily mass-produce Purple potential Pokémon.
Putting aside Steven's Metagross, how did Cynthia's Chandelure become a Purple potential Pokémon? Did Giratina help her? Yuga silently wondered.
In reality, it wasn't Giratina who helped. Giratina did indeed help one of Cynthia's Pokémon evolve to Purple potential, but it wasn't the Ghost-type Chandelure—it was the Dragon-type Garchomp.
Yuga had never severed his connection with Giratina, and Cynthia, with the same conditions, certainly hadn't either.
Cynthia's Chandelure became a Purple potential Pokémon thanks to the help of the League.
The League has agreements with various Order-aligned Legendary Pokémon. When the League obtained the Giant Rock Fragments, they could promptly deliver them to the respective Legendary Pokémon, but those Pokémon weren't going to take things from the League for nothing.
The right to help the League Champions' Pokémon evolve their potential was one of the privileges the League earned from the Legendary Pokémon.
However, these privileges were not common, and it was rare to get one every decade or so. After all, Legendary Pokémon weren't like hens that could lay eggs on command.
Only Champions who had made great contributions to the League could earn this opportunity, and it was exclusively for League Champions.
Steven's Metagross had undergone its transformation in this way.
Some champions, if their potential is insufficient or if they are too old, will not receive this opportunity from the League, even if the chance arises, such as Unova's Champion Alder.
This opportunity is incredibly valuable and must be fully utilized, so it is only given to capable and young champions, making it most cost-effective.
Since Yuga is not a champion, no one has told him about this benefit.
After a flurry of thoughts, Yuga began to focus on the battle ahead. He raised his hand and summoned Gengar and Mismagius, who appeared on the battlefield on either side of him.
Seeing the strange entrance of Gengar and Mismagius, Iris and the others outside the field gasped, even Meloetta, hidden nearby, flickered a few times in surprise.
"Gengar, Mega Evolve!" As soon as Gengar appeared, Yuga instructed it to Mega Evolve.
Although Yuga's Gengar and Mismagius didn't have any purple potential, they had higher levels than the opposing Pokémon and were a very harmonious pair. Now, with Mega Evolution added, Yuga didn't think he would lose.
"Gengar!!!"
A flash of colorful light passed, and Gengar underwent a dramatic transformation. Outside the field, Iris and the others gasped again, especially Iris and Cilan, who were seeing Mega Evolution for the first time.
Seeing Yuga's Gengar Mega Evolve, Cynthia was also a bit surprised, smiling as she spoke to her Chandelure and Empoleon, "Chandelure, Empoleon, greet them first! Flamethrower, Flash Cannon!"
"Chandelure~"
"Empoleon~"
Chandelure and Empoleon responded, controlling a pillar of fire and a silver beam of light to shoot toward Yuga's Gengar and Mismagius.
Both Gengar and Mismagius were very agile Pokémon. Gengar burrowed into the ground, disappearing from sight. Chandelure's Flamethrower blasted a large pit in the ground; Mismagius quickly flew upwards, while Empoleon's Flash Cannon exploded harmlessly in the air.
Seeing Chandelure and Empoleon's attacks miss, Yuga shouted, "Gengar, Mismagius, it's our turn to counterattack! Shadow Ball, Power Gem!"
"Gengar~"
"Mismagius~"
Gengar suddenly reappeared on the opposite side of the field, shooting a black beam towards Chandelure, while Mismagius shot a brownish-yellow beam at Empoleon.
"Empoleon, Whirlpool!"
At Cynthia's command, a funnel-shaped whirlpool appeared above Empoleon, growing larger and larger, and Empoleon guided it toward the space between it and Chandelure.
Whether it was Gengar's Shadow Ball or Mismagius's Power Gem, both were sucked into the Whirlpool, turning the originally blue whirlpool into a beautiful sight, streaked with black and swirling patterns.
"Chandelure, Confusion!"
Chandelure used Confusion to control the Whirlpool, throwing it toward Gengar and Mismagius.
"Gengar, Mismagius, Confusion!" Yuga shouted.
Before the Whirlpool hit Gengar and Mismagius, intense purple light shot from their eyes. Their psychic powers fused instantly, halting the Whirlpool in mid-air.
Gengar and Mismagius acted as if they were one, which allowed their psychic powers to merge together, creating an effect greater than the sum of its parts.
The psychic powers of Gengar and Mismagius clashed with Chandelure's, and despite Chandelure being a purple potential Pokémon with much stronger psychic abilities than others of the same level, it was still no match for the combined force of Gengar and Mismagius. It quickly lost the battle of wills.
Boom~
The Whirlpool couldn't withstand the combined pressure from the three Pokémon and exploded in mid-air, splashing countless drops of water, which soaked the ground.
Chandelure let out a painful groan, clearly having been at a disadvantage in the recent struggle.
Seizing the opportunity, Empoleon used Surf, summoning a massive wave that surged toward Gengar and Mismagius. The wave's crest was so high it nearly engulfed the entire battlefield, and Gengar and Mismagius couldn't avoid it.
"Gengar, Mismagius, block it!"
Yuga shouted loudly, and with a deep bond of understanding, Gengar and Mismagius immediately responded. Their psychic powers hadn't even separated, and they directed their combined energy onto the massive wave.
"Gengar~"
"Mismagius~"
To resist the enormous wave, Gengar and Mismagius gave everything they had. The rolling wave was forcefully held in mid-air by their psychic powers, immobilized by the two Pokémon.
At that moment, Empoleon, still standing atop the wave, was also pinned in place.
Taking advantage of the situation, Gengar quickly ascended, and Mismagius burrowed into the ground, disappearing without giving Chandelure a chance for a surprise attack.
Boom~
Without Gengar and Mismagius's psychic support, the wave collapsed violently, the rolling water pouring out of the battlefield. Whether it was Yuga, Cynthia, Ash, or Iris, their shoes and pants were drenched.
The commotion was so intense that even the invisible Meloetta briefly appeared. The energy fluctuation it caused made Yuga instinctively glance in its direction.
Without the support of the wave, Empoleon fell to the ground. At that moment, Gengar and Mismagius reappeared and unleashed a dual Thunderbolt on Empoleon.
"Empoleon~"
The combined power of the two Thunderbolts was astonishing, especially with the Electric-type move's advantage over Water-type Pokémon. Empoleon cried out in pain before collapsing.
However, Yuga didn't gain too much of an advantage. In an attempt to surprise Empoleon, Mismagius hadn't escaped quickly enough and was hit by Chandelure's Inferno, falling into a burn state.
Chandelure's Inferno created a massive fiery circle on the battlefield, with flames shooting high into the air. If Gengar hadn't acted swiftly, it would have been caught as well.
Once Mismagius was burned, Chandelure focused its attacks on it. Mismagius, not as quick as Gengar, was once again unlucky, and the combination of misfortune caused it to lose its ability to fight.
However, Mismagius was no easy opponent. Before it went down, it used Pain Split to transfer a large portion of Chandelure's health, significantly weakening it.
Had it not been for the increased power of Misfortune, which doubled the damage to Mismagius while it was burned, Mismagius might have even survived without losing as much health.
Next, it was a one-on-one battle between Gengar and Chandelure.
Chandelure had powerful attacks, but it had one major disadvantage: its speed was much slower than Gengar's after it Mega Evolved, making it highly vulnerable to being outmaneuvered by Gengar. As a result, it used Trick Room.
Earlier, with Empoleon on the field, it couldn't use it. But now, there were no such concerns.
Speed was originally an advantage for Mega Gengar, but now it became a liability.
However, Yuga wasn't without a strategy for this situation.
Why was Gengar so good at evading attacks? It was because, after Mega Evolution, a strange subspace connected to Gengar's body. Even without the speed advantage, as long as it was hit, Gengar could retract its head and retreat into the subspace, making it nearly impossible for anyone to hit it.
Cynthia had never encountered another Mega Gengar and didn't know this about it. So, she fell victim to her inexperience. In the end, Gengar used Dark Pulse to ambush and defeat Chandelure.
Had Gengar not Mega Evolved, it would have definitely been no match for Chandelure. With Trick Room in play, Gengar alone would have been helpless against it.
