IN ANOTHER WORLD

Chapter 5: Slender and beautiful Ella

The dense foliage of the Volly Forest quivered with the whispers of wind and the rustling of unseen creatures as Gill led Sou and Rema carefully along the forest's treacherous path. His towering, formidable spirit form radiated an aura of protection, causing even the most ferocious magical beasts to retreat silently into the shadows. Sou trudged behind, his weary eyes flicking to his unconscious companion cradled in Gill's massive arms.

"Gill, are you sure this isn't too much of a burden?" Sou asked hesitantly, his voice laced with both gratitude and guilt.

"Ah, there's no need for such concern," Gill replied, his deep voice carrying a reassuring warmth. "It's an honor to be of help. You're safe with me."

Rema nodded, her exhaustion momentarily eclipsed by a flicker of trust. "Thank you, Gill. We're in your care."

The group pressed on, Gill's presence clearing their path effortlessly. The tension that typically accompanied traversing Volly Forest was replaced with a cautious calm as the magical beasts, sensing the spirit chief's overwhelming power, gave them a wide berth. After hours of careful travel, the forest began to thin, and the oppressive darkness of the canopy gave way to sunlight that bathed a sprawling expanse of lush, green land.

At the edge of the forest, Sou and Rema froze in awe, the wind tugging at their hair as they took in the breathtaking sight before them. The land was enclosed by colossal, vine-draped walls, with only two prominent gates granting passage. Guards stood watch at the entrance—human-like in stature but difficult to discern from a distance. Within the walls, clusters of wooden houses and vine-crafted caves sprawled in an intricate design. From afar, the figures moving about the community seemed almost human, but an air of mystery hung over them.

"Gill," Sou murmured, her voice tinged with wonder, "are the people here... human like us?"

Gill chuckled softly, a sound both resonant and kind. "Not quite. They're all spirit folk, like me."

"Spirit folk?" Rema echoed, her brows furrowing. "But they look so different from you!"

Gill grinned, his sharp features softening. "Ah, that's because you've only seen me in my true spirit form. Allow me to demonstrate."

With a surge of shimmering magic, Gill's form began to shift. His towering figure condensed, and the sharp scales adorning his body melted into smoother, human-like features. When the transformation was complete, Gill stood before them, still distinctly otherworldly but far less intimidating. His pointed ears, elongated fingers, and glinting, scaled skin gave him an ethereal appearance.

"How do I look now?" he asked, a hint of playfulness in his tone.

"Much better!" Rema replied, her earlier tension dissolving into relief.

Gill laughed heartily. "I should have shifted earlier, but you see, my true form keeps magical beasts at bay. It's a necessity when traveling through the forest. Still, I realize it must have unsettled you. For that, I apologize."

"No, no," Sou stammered, shaking his head quickly. "You were protecting us. Please don't feel bad."

Gill's expression grew serious. "We shouldn't delay any longer. Your friend's breathing is becoming more unstable. The effects of the flower's magic are fading."

As they approached the gates, the murmurs of the guards reached their ears.

"Hey, isn't that Gill?"

"And who's with him?"

"Humans? Here?"

"Are we even allowed to let them in?"

Despite the quiet skepticism in their voices, the guards approached with deference.

"Good evening, Chief," one greeted. "Back from Volly Forest, I see."

"Indeed," Gill replied with a nod. "Good work as always, Seam, Ravi, Mendal."

The guard named Ravi tilted his head curiously. "May I ask who your companions are?"

Gill gestured to Sou and Rema. "Young adventurers from another world. They're inexperienced and got lost. One of their companions is poisoned, so I've brought them here for aid."

"Understood, Chief. Shall I register them as your guests?"

"Yes, please," Gill confirmed. Turning to Sou and Rema, he added, "Let's proceed."

As they walked through the bustling community, Sou couldn't help but observe the spirit folk more closely. Now that they were near, she could see the faint glimmer of scales on their skin and the subtle elongation of their features. Despite their otherworldly traits, their movements and expressions carried a distinctly human-like warmth.

"They all look like you now," Sou noted.

Gill smiled. "Yes, though we may appear human from a distance, we are of the spirit realm. Our forms are as much a part of nature as the vines that surround us."

The murmur of the villagers followed them, their curiosity evident as they glanced at the unusual visitors. Finally, Gill stopped in front of an ornate cave, its entrance framed by ivy that cascaded like a verdant waterfall. A wooden banner above the doorway bore the words "The Tendril Residence."

"Welcome to my home," Gill announced with a sweeping gesture.

As they stepped inside, a delicate figure emerged—a slender, graceful spirit woman with an aura of quiet strength. Her skin shimmered faintly, like sunlight on water, and her eyes held a deep, knowing warmth.

"Fellows, meet my beloved wife, Ella," Gill said, his voice softening with affection. "My princess."

Ella blushed and offered a shy smile. "You always flatter me, my dear." Turning her attention to Sou and Rema, she added, "And who might these young ones be? Such weary travelers!"

"They're from another world," Gill explained. "Earth, they call it. They've lost their way, and the machine that brought them here is broken. I've brought them here so we might help."

"Oh, my!" Ella exclaimed, concern flashing across her face. "Don't worry, my friends. We'll do everything in our power to aid you. But first, you must rest. Young lady," she said, addressing Sou, "a bath will do wonders for your spirit. And you, young man," she added, looking at Rema, "you could use some care as well."

Ella's gentle smile was like a balm, and for the first time since their journey began, Sou and Rema felt a glimmer of hope.
