Chapter 8: Chapter 8

{A/N: Theres another chapter!. Though seriously I don't know where this chapter came from, I was kinda just brainstorming a sketch for the next chapter and entered the zone. So I guess you guys get another chapter.}

1st Pov

On the streets of New York just after midday I could be seen walking towards Oscorp Tower. Stepping around an especially dirty pile of garbage I notice a junkyard down an alley, checking my inventory I looked at the pile of material I had collected over a day ago. Shrugging I mentally say, 'fuck it' and head down the alley.

Within the junkyard I extend a tendril and with a joint combination of Matter Manipulation and my inventory I rapidly add to my material stockpile. Avoiding the fairly common homeless shambling around looking for junk to sell, I marvel at the sheer quantity of junk stashed in the middle of a suburban district.

Towering above the surrounding apartment buildings massive piles of junk stare down like steel sentinels. Noticing movement under one of the piles I look over and see a old human with obvious mutations, the person has long sharp talons similar to a bird with small patches of feathers growing around their neck and eyes.

Curious I draw my tendril back in and walk over to them, noticing they're trapped under a piece of metal I reach out and lift it off them. Standing up the person backs away from me skittishly.

"Why didn't you shout for help" – Morgan

Curious why someone would willingly stay trapped over calling for help from the nearby people, I voice my thoughts to the man, waiting for a few seconds for the man to answer he continues to look around like a frightened animal and doesn't reply.

Bored of this I turn back to scavenging as the man sprints away like his life depends on it, as he turns the cloths that previously hid the front of his neck part and for less than a second, I'm able to see a large horrific wound mostly scarred over.

'I guess he can't talk' not caring enough about the matter enough to delve into how the man got the wound I let him run off. After another five minutes scavenging the junkyard and using my matter manipulation to create material ingots, I leave the junk yard.

Continuing back along the footpath I take a material ingot out of my inventory and begin fiddling with it using my matter manipulation. At the moment my matter manipulation can only operate on molecules, my goal is eventually to get it to the stage I can rearrange base particles so for that practise is needed.

One of the things I'm struggling with at the moment is actually seeing what I'm working with. To me at the moment its like reaching into a box full of different shapes blindfolded, I can feel what shape I'm holding and move it between my hands easy enough but if I drop it or lose it, I have to feel around for it knocking the other shapes around in the process.

It also gets difficult identifying small or really complex shapes. What I'm trying to do at the moment whilst walking is incorporate my Psionics into my matter manipulation. Something I've noticed about my psionics is I seem to project my mind and use it to manipulate objects, this allows me to form a sort of mental 3D image of the area my psionics is affecting.

The problem I'm running into though is my psionics is only low grade at the moment and can only make out stuff to the size of a human hair. Luckily, my enhanced mind and split processing allows me a higher degree of control but it's not enough.

Focusing I slowly allocate more and more thought trains to the task in my hand, I can feel I'm so close to reaching my goal I just need a little more effort and I can form a joint skill. Single mindedly focusing I no longer pay attention to where I'm walking and crash headfirst into someone snapping me out of my focus and knocking them on the ground.

Angrily looking at the person on the ground I'm upset as I lost my focus when I was so close and now, I have a headache from straining my mind. Resetting my thought trains to their usual tasks, I pay more attention to the person I knocked over. The person I knocked over is a young woman looking to be around 19 years old, she has long fiery red hair that extends down past her shoulders towards her shapely B-cup breasts.

Extending a hand to her I helped her to her feet, she stood slightly shorter than me by around 4cm, looking closer she had sweat beading on her forehead and signs of tears against her eyes. Feeling a weird feeling in my head I put it to the side as part of my headache. Feeling she looked familiar I used appraisal on her and was surprised by the results.

[Name – Jean Grey

Age – 19

Species – Mutant (Homo-superior)

Info – Jean Grey is a young woman, as part of the X-men Jean risks her life regularly to help innocents. Jean has the ability of telepathy and telekinesis; she is bonded to the phoenix force which was sealed within her mind when she was a young child by Professor Charles Xavier in his deluded thoughts he was helping. Jean is currently upset because she caught her boyfriend cheating on her before their date.]

Wow, surprised by the amount of information the Appraisal skill gave on her, I do the polite thing and apologise to her.

"Sorry miss I wasn't watching where I was going, are you okay" – Morgan

"It's okay I was running through the streets; I'm fine how about you miss…" – Jean

"Ah my name is Morgana, you can call me Morgan for short, I'm fine I was worried about you as you hit the ground miss…" – Morgan

"My name is Jean" – Jean

"Nice to meet you Jean, would you like to get a coffee, you look a bit stressed and like you need to vent" – Morgan

"Hhm, that's a nice offer Morgan, I'll happily get coffee with you. Do you know any good coffee places nearby." – Jean

Twiddling my hair awkwardly I search my memories to see if I know or saw any interesting Cafes, I draw a blank.

"Sorry Jean it's my first time in New York and I've only been here a few hours so far, would you like to walk with me and see if we can find anything." – Morgan

"Sure, I'm free for most of the day anyway." – Jean

After out brief conversation and interaction Jean and I began walking along the streets talking about random subjects that came to mind. By now I'd figured out the constant feeling around my mind wasn't my headache as that had cleared up and was likely Jeans telepathy. Funny enough I could feel it harmlessly bouncing off the psionic energy around my mind giving her at most surface thoughts.

I also knew she wouldn't have any luck if she tried to delve deeper into my mind for a number of reasons, the first reason was my multiple thought trains would confuse and scramble her probe. The second reason was my techno-organic nature made my mind alien to her, though the phoenix force could probably help her with that.

The third reason was in order to delve deeper into my mind she would have to move through my surface thoughts, which with my immunity to control would prevent her from moving my surface thoughts and form a hard shell around my mind to any telepath.

My final and strongest reason was the new notification I was looking at.

Skill {Adapt and Evolve Lvl Max} has activated

Skill {Psychic Immunity Lvl 99/100} has been developed with the help of {Adapt and Evolve Lvl Max}

Mentally swiping the notification, I allowed her access to my surface thoughts as I had nothing to hide. Most of these thoughts were just numbers, equations and complex formulas generated by my thought trains.

Looking around as we walk, I interrupt Jean talking about her classmates to point out a quaint little Café on the street corner up ahead. Entering through the door a bell hanging above chimed to alert the owner. Stepping out from the back of the café was a short older Asian woman, looking around the interior of the café is mostly deserted with only two other groups.

Turning to Jean I gesture towards a two person table sat by the back wall next to a large mural, going first Jean heads to the table and I, picking up two menus from the owner follow after her. Sitting in the seat opposite her I hand Jean a menu before quickly glancing at my own. Seeing Jean read through her menu for a bit before putting it down I start a conversation whilst waiting for the waiter.

"So, Jean, are you a New York local or did you move here." – Morgan

"I'm a local, I've lived here since a was a little kid. I live in a suburb on the outskirts, it's quite a nice place though New York has been going downhill in recent years in my opinion." – Jean

"I've got to agree with you on that Jean, New York is a bit of a disappointment it's very messy. I'll fix it up eventually though because there is no way I'm living in a filthy city" – Morgan

"Interesting, so where are you from Morgan and what do you mean you'll fix it." – Jean

Opening my mouth to answer Jean I'm interrupted by the waiter coming over.

"Afternoon Ladies what would you two like to order today." Saying this the waiter adjusts the pen and clipboard in his hand.

"For me I would like an Iced Strawberry Thick shake." – Morgan

"I would like to get a Chocolate milkshake and a plate of chocolate chip cookies." – Jean

Writing down our orders the waiter turns and leaves us be, turning back to Jean I continue our earlier conversation.

"I've come from Australia and I plan on fixing up this city, I already have a few plans and designs in mind for some cleaning robots." – Morgan

Looking surprised for a bit and a bit shocked Jean excitedly continues our conversation. After about five minutes of casual back and forth conversations our drinks and food arrive and we have a break from our conversation. Sipping my drink Jean offers me one of her cookies which I politely decline. Continuing our casual conversation between sips of the drinks, Jean mentions her boyfriend and I watch her mood rapidly change.

Angrily ranting Jean goes on and on about how much she liked her boyfriend, Scott, and how much it hurt to catch him cheating on her. By this point in the conversation Jean begins to look genuinely upset and tears start to pool in the corners of her eyes.

Reassuring Jean that it's not her fault and that Scott's to blame by disrespecting her and cheating she begins to cheer up a bit. Passing her a napkin to wipe her tears we finish our orders and sit there for a bit in silence. After about a minute Jean regains her composure and we leave the store, me paying on the way out.

Once again walking down the street with Jean I notice a phone store ahead, and remembering I don't have a phone for personal use yet turn to Jean.

"Hey Jean, would you mind if we went to the phone shop quickly, I lost my phone on my flight and need to get a replacement." – Morgan

"Sure, thing Morgan, by the way I've been wondering what's with your eyes? They're pretty but are they real or contacts?" – Jean

"Thanks for the compliment, Jean, and for your knowledge they are completely real, I also have horns, wings and a tail" – Morgan

Saying this I turn to Jean with a cheeky grin, the type of grin you sport when you tell a friend a joke. Jean for her part looks a bit confused, seemingly trying to figure out if I was being serious or not. Interrupting Jean before she thinks too deeply about it, I gently poke her shoulder and gesture towards the store we're standing in front of.

Stepping inside with Jean following me I walk up to the clerk at the counter inside.

"Afternoon sir, I'm looking to get the most up to date phone and a new sim card" – Morgan

Hearing me the clerk wordlessly nods before walking through a door into the back of the shop leaving me and Jean standing alone in an awkward silence, opening her mouth Jean looks like she has something to ask me but hesitates. Gathering her courage Jean seems ready to speak when the clerk steps back into the room holding what I asked for and interrupting Jean.

Paying the clerk in stolen cash, I give him a nod before leaving the store. Standing outside the store door I fiddle with the phone discreetly using a tendril to open the sim port, with a liberal use of my strength I tear through the hard plastic holding the sim card and put it into my phone.

Looking at Jean she's standing in the door with a small frown on her face as she appears to think. Interrupting her thoughts once again I hold my phone out to her.

"Want to add your number to my phone Jean? I hope we could be good friends in the future." – Morgan

Looking at the outstretched phone Jean sighs before smiling and taking the phone from my hand, after a few seconds Jean hands me back my phone. Looking at the only number in my phone I smirk at Jean and send her a message. Feeling her phone vibrate Jean pulls out her phone before shooting me a blank stare.

"Really? What do you mean by 'Hi firebird'?" – Jean

Memorising my number on her phone I smirk at Jean as I walk off down the street whistling innocently to myself. Running after me Jean chuckles before asking me.

"So where to now, Morgan got any plans?" – Jean

"Now I'm thinking I go look for a hotel before checking out the nearby tech stores. I've got to get somewhere to sleep after all"

Continuing our conversations as we walk, eventually we arrive outside a large multi storey hotel building. Walking in I quickly check over their bookings before handing over a wad of cash and reserving the penthouse room for a week.

Jean seeing me get the penthouse seems shocked for a bit. Addressing Jean casually I ask.

"So, Jean what now? Do you want to continue walking around, we could visit some shops I've got on my list. Or do you want to head up to the Penthouse and chat in peace?" – Morgan

"I reckon we walk around the town for a bit, I've got to get going soon but if we walk in the direction, I parked my car we can continue talking for a bit." – Jean

Nodding at Jean I pocket the key I was given, secretly sending it to my inventory and walk towards the door. Seeing Jean still standing there I gesture for her to lead the way.

Following Jean we go over more casual conversation, with her mentioning working on her teaching degree. Interested in this topic I ask her to elaborate and she mentions how's she's training to be a mixed profession teacher with a main focus on biology and political sciences.

Turning to me Jean asks what I do and I explain to her I'm an aspiring entrepreneur here to establish my company. Looking worried Jean asks if I'm certain of my choice and I assure her I am.

Arriving at her car, Jean turns to me looking nervous. I seeing this encourage her to speak.

"Morgan what do you think of mutants?" – Jean

Thinking it over a bit, I don't hate mutants. To me they are just humans the only thing I don't like is them calling themselves mutants, it invokes a sense of disgust in me and makes me think of cancer and other horrific mutations. I personally believe DC did it best by calling super powered individuals meta-humans.

"I don't mind mutants though I do prefer calling them meta-humans, it seems less derogatory that way. Anyway, to me meta's are just another human." – Morgan

Jean lets out a sigh of relief and I can see her shoulders relax, then after a few seconds of processing my words, she seems to think really deeply about something.

"I quite like that term meta-human it feels far better on the tongue. Ignoring that though what I really wanted to ask you Morgan is, Are you a mutant, no, meta human." – Jean

Looking Jean directly in the eyes I respond dead on to her question and feeling mischievous ask her one of my own.

"No Jean I'm not a mutant or meta-human. My question to you though Jean is what do you think of aliens." – Morgan

Seeing Jean stammer for a bit and get caught up in her thoughts I laugh to myself and begin walking away. Shouting out to Jean as I'm just about to leave view, I say.

"See you later Firebird, call me if you want to hang out."

Saying this I left Jean alone in the carpark with her thoughts and headed back to the hotel I booked earlier.
