Chapter 3: Gifts

292AC

Winterfell Courtyard

"Alright, is everyone accounted for?" Edric's sharp gaze darted over the gathered crowd.

"Will you hurry up already?" Arya groaned impatiently.

Edric smirked and began distributing his gifts.

"For Robb, a full set of armor," Edric announced as the carriage driver unveiled the bundle. "Cold-pressed Valyrian steel with active runes. Don't blame me if it still carries the lingering spirit of its old owner."

Robb accepted the armor with awe, tracing the faint glow of the runes.

"Next, for Sansa and Mother," Edric continued, placing a massive chest on the ground with an audible thud. "Exquisite clothing for both summer and winter, collected from all across Essos, they wont fit you now cause they are sized for adults sister."

Sansa snorted and Lady Stark's eyes softened. "Thank you, son."

Edric bowed his head briefly before pulling out a smooth, pale object. "And for you, Mother, a cold white jade pillow from Yi Ti. They say it aids sleep."

"A thoughtful gift," Lady Stark said, her voice warm.

Turning to Arya, Edric hauled a bow from the wagon and set it down heavily, the ground beneath it cracking slightly. The weapon gleamed with an ominous beauty.

"A Valyrian bow," Edric said, his voice serious. "It took me a year to unravel its magic. When touched by anyone other than its owner, it becomes as heavy as a dozen full wagons. Come here, Arya."

Arya stepped forward hesitantly. Edric took her hand and made a small incision on her palm. "Ow!" she yelped.

He let a few drops of blood fall onto the bow, murmuring an incantation in High Valyrian. The bow flared red briefly before the light vanished.

"It will remain in the vault until you've mastered archery and have Father's permission to wield it," Edric said firmly.

"That's not fair!" Arya protested.

"Sorry, Bran, I forgot and didn't get anything for you," Edric said, causing the boy's expression to droop like a little puppy. "But I'll play with you anytime you ask when I'm in Winterfell. Is that okay?" This made Bran excited, and he nodded his head vigorously.

Lord Stark and Lord Cerwyn approached as the final gifts were distributed.

Edric chuckled before turning to Jon. "And for you, Jon—a collection of magical tomes and texts from Valyria. All of it. I'll oversee your training in the arcane arts."

Jon looked stunned, and even Lord Stark seemed momentarily lost for words.

"Son, isn't this too much?" Lord Stark asked.

Edric shrugged. "It's a one-time thing, Father. It's alright to be spoiled once in a while."

Lord Stark opened his mouth to protest, but Edric cut him off.

"For you, Father—a handcrafted Valyrian cane. Hidden inside is a rapier, a spear tip at the base, and a needle coated with the deadliest paralyzer I found in Valyria. It can paralyze and kill an elephant in moments." He handed over a jar. "This is all the toxin I managed to collect hunting the chimera's. There's no more in the world. I hope you never have to use it."

Lord Stark accepted the cane with a solemn nod.

"Here is the instruction of use and maintenance Manual, only use after you read the whole thing" handing over a Thick small handbook to Lord stark

Lord Cerwyn spoke up, smiling. "M'lord, it seems you have a very… thorough son."

Lord Stark smirked faintly. "A little too thorough."

"lord cerwyn wasn't the letter stated to come on a later day" asked Edric

Lord Cerwyn cleared his throat. "I came early, lord Edric. The gold and farming tools you sent will be immensely helpful. But I couldn't resist when the future of north was mentioned".

"I can't show partiality, you have to wait for the gathering of all the lords"

"I never intended to M'lord but i want to invite to spar. A duel, if you'll accept." asked Cerwyn

Edric grinned. "Gladly, my lord. Father, will you judge?"

Lord Stark nodded, and the courtyard cleared as spectators gathered, murmurs of excitement filling the air. Wagers began passing hands, most favoring Lord Cerwyn.

Lord Cerwyn inspected Edric curiously. "M'lord, aren't you going to arm yourself?"

Edric cracked his knuckles. "I prefer my own two hands."

"Alright this a sparring match, no fatal strikes, victor will be determined when one yields or unable to continue to fight" Lord Stark raised Ice and signaled. "Begin!"

Lord Cerwyn charged, his double-headed axe slicing through the air with deadly force. Edric sidestepped gracefully, planting his foot on the ground and using the momentum to unbalance Lord Cerwyn.

The older man stumbled, recovered quickly, and turned to face Edric again. The younger Stark raised his hands mockingly, smirking as the crowd cheered.

They continued their dance, Lord Cerwyn swinging with increasing ferocity, Edric dodging with inhuman agility. Sweat dripped from Lord Cerwyn's brow as frustration crept into his features.

"Are you going to keep dancing like a coward, boy, or will you fight me properly?" Lord Cerwyn roared.

Edric sighed. "You asked for it."

In a flash, Edric vanished. A loud crack echoed as spiderweb fissures splintered where he lept from. Lord Cerwyn froze, eyes darting around in panic.

A gasp swept through the crowd as Edric reappeared behind him, legs wrapped around Cerwyn's waist, one hand gripping his head and the other forming a mock pistol at the lord's neck. A single drop of blood welled where Edric's sharp nail pressed into the skin.

"Yield," Edric said, his voice low and cold.

The courtyard fell silent. Lord Cerwyn's axe dropped with a heavy clang, and he raised his hands in surrender.

"I yield," he said, voice trembling slightly.

Cheers erupted from the crowd, and the Stark family clapped proudly, even Lord Stark allowing himself a small smile.

Edric released Lord Cerwyn and stepped back, offering a respectful nod. The older man rubbed his neck and let out a shaky laugh.

Lord Cerwyn picked up his axe, dusted it off, and turned to face Edric. His eyes shone with newfound respect.

"Now we understand how you earned your names. You move like light—too fast for the naked eye to follow."

Edric simply smirked, his cold gray eyes glinting thinking it never occurred to him that way.

"Alright, everyone back to work," Lord Stark's commanding voice cut through the lingering tension.

As the crowd began to disperse, Stark turned to Lord Cerwyn. "Safe travels, Medger. Give my greetings to your wife and children."

"Yes, m'lord. I'll see you in a few days," Lord Cerwyn replied, mounting his horse and riding off towards Castle Cerwyn.

Once the courtyard had cleared, Jon, Arya, and Robb swarmed around Edric, their questions overlapping.

"How did you do that?"

"Teach me, Edric! Please!"

Their relentless curiosity began to wear on Edric's patience. With an exasperated sigh, he raised his hand high and shouted, "Calm down! Do you all really want to know?"

"Yes!" they chorused.

Edric smirked. "You have to keep doing it, no matter how hard it gets. It took me three years to get this far: 100 sit-ups, 100 push-ups, a 3-league run, and then 100 squats every single day. Meditation to strengthen your mind. And, of course, make sure you eat three meals daily—just a fruit is fine in the morning. In the beginning, you'll wish you were dead. You might start thinking, "What's the harm in taking a day off?" Even when my arms started making weird clicking sounds, I kept doing push-ups. I did squats even when my legs couldn't move. Even if I spat blood, I never stopped. I toughed it out and kept going. Overall, you've got to train until your body gives up." -( sorry i had to make this OPM reference).

"And this is only for physical prowess and the arcane is whole other training" replied their brother

Before they could protest, Edric turned to his father. "Father, I have much to discuss with you—things regarding the coming days and some humble requests. Can we go through them tomorrow?"

Lord Stark nodded. "At dawn. I will be riding out later to the surrounding forests. Bandit activity has increased since the Greyjoy Rebellion. Robb, Jon—you'll ride with me. Eat well and get some rest; we've a long day tomorrow."

With a nod of approval and a pat on Edric's shoulder, Lord Stark departed for his solar.

Edric turned to Jon and Arya. "Jon, why don't you head to the library and start your High Valyrian lessons? I've spoken with Maester Luwin. And take Arya with you—she looks like she's about to die of boredom."

Jon sighed but nodded, grabbing Arya by the wrist. "Come on, Arya."

"But I don't want to!" Arya whined, trying to pull away.

Jon, undeterred, dragged her along, her protests echoing faintly as they disappeared into the keep.

Edric turned to Robb. "Robb, walk with me."

The two brothers made their way to the cart, picking up the enchanted bow and several tomes. They dismissed the carriage driver and carried the precious cargo to the crypt vaults. Once everything was safely stowed away, Edric turned to face his older brother.

"Robb, you'll ascend when the North faces its darkest hour since Bran the Builder. I want you to be ready. I know you're doing your best, but there's always room to push harder. Don't let overconfidence blind you."

Robb met Edric's unyielding gaze, the cold gray eyes seeming to peer into his very soul.

"You know, a lot of people want you to be the heir. With your power and influence, they'd flock to your banner in a heartbeat. It's not fair that I'm expected to rule just because I was born moments earlier."

Edric gripped Robb's shoulders firmly. "Brother, that's exactly why you need to lead. If they see my strength, they'll crave more—they'll dream of a free North, of independence. But we're not ready… not yet. And honestly, I don't want to rule. Too much bureaucracy. Too many politics."

Robb smiled faintly. "At least something not changed about you."

Both brothers shared a brief laugh.

Edric's expression grew serious again. "I'm warning you now—I'll be doing things that may seem bizarre, even mad, to others. They'll call me a monster."

Robb smirked. "Some already do."

Edric chuckled. "Haha....Not funny. But listen, I need you to trust me, Robb. Can you do that?"

Robb placed a hand over Edric's. "Don't worry, brother. I've got your back. Always, But no secrets"

"Hm....I can't promise that, some matters are better be unknown by anyone but i will tell all my secrets that i have shared with others does that suffice" questioned Edric

Robb gave a Nod, They clasped hands firmly, a silent promise exchanged between them.

Edric sighed in relief. "Well, all that fighting and talking has made me hungry. Shall we go eat supper?"

Throwing an arm around Robb's shoulder, Edric led his brother out of the crypts, their laughter echoing softly in the dim stone halls.
