Chapter 8: 8. The Young Lady Excels at Getting into Trouble at Lightspeed.
The corridor leading from the void station's port to the residential area was eerily silent.
Even though the sensors confirmed that the void station's systems were functioning normally and the monitors along the corridor were blinking red lights, there was no sign of life.
No living people, nor any corpses.
It was only when they reached the arched junction connecting three wide corridors that they finally heard something besides the hum of machinery — a sound that belonged to someone else in the void station.
From the corridor on the right, a young woman in an elegant blue robe came running toward them in a panic.
Even from a distance, Noah could clearly see the inhuman traits on her body — skin paler than silver hair, limbs unnaturally long and slender, and malformed hands tipped with claws. Her eyes appeared shrouded in a blood-red mist, with fresh blood continuously flowing from them, adding a hint of color to her ghostly pale face.
"Help… help me…"
The girl staggered along the wall of the corridor, struggling toward them. Just as she was about to collapse as she passed Noah, he instinctively reached out to support her, letting the seemingly frail girl lean into his arms.
"Mm~"
Her long lashes trembled slightly, and the gill-like ridges on her cheeks, hidden beneath her disheveled hair, twitched nervously.
Sister Argenta observed the girl's expression carefully, frowning slightly. This wasn't at all how she remembered events unfolding.
Before Noah could ask any questions, another group appeared from the corridor where the girl had come. They were armed soldiers.
"Kill—"
The tall man leading them began to shout when he saw the girl in Noah's arms. But as soon as he noticed the black-armored battle sisters and the four-meter-tall mech beside Noah, he immediately calmed down.
The tall man mentally searched his memory for Noah's face, confirming there was no such figure in his family. His expression darkened as he spoke: "Sir, I don't care who you are. If you hand over the traitor in your arms, I will overlook your trespass on the Navigator Clan's void station. May the Emperor bear witness!"
"No, please don't."
The girl's pale face took on an almost pleading look as she clutched at Noah for help. "I am Cassia Orsellio. Frelic is the traitor. Please don't believe him!"
Cassia's already pale complexion made it hard to tell if she was truly scared, but her pitiful appearance stirred a protective instinct in those around her.
"Conceal your psychic power!" Sister Argenta frowned, immediately pointing her weapon at Cassia.
"Sorry… I-I can't fully control my abilities yet…"
Cassia trembled, lowering her head and pressing her lips together.
Seeing this, Frelic's face twisted in disgust as he barked:
"I am Frelic Orsellio, guardian of this void station, and these are its soldiers. As you can see, her uncontrolled psychic powers have caused half my men to turn on each other, suspecting each other of treachery!
"Now, do you believe this psychic monster trying to manipulate you, or me?"
Frelic's two black eyes never left Noah's movements, while a third eye, concealed beneath a quivering eyelid on his forehead, throbbed ominously.
If these strangers rejected his mercy, he had no problem showing them the horrors of the Warp Sea. Frelic was confident even battle sisters in power armor wouldn't stand a chance against the tides of chaos.
"I need a navigator," Noah stated calmly, unperturbed by Frelic's implied threats.
"No problem!" Frelic answered without hesitation. "Hand her over, and you'll earn the friendship of the Orsellio family. The best navigator will be at your disposal!"
"That won't be necessary."
Noah smiled. "Because I believe this lady here is quite capable."
Frelic's face darkened, and with a furious roar, he ordered his soldiers: "Open fire!"
The soldiers fired without hesitation, but the battle sisters immediately returned fire.
Frelic began to lift his eyelid, ready to unleash the Warp Sea's tide upon them. But before he could act, his eyes suddenly went vacant, and the motion froze. His body stiffened and collapsed to the floor.
Cassia silently withdrew her gaze, weakly leaning against Noah.
Gunfire erupted in the corridor.
Though the soldiers reacted quickly, every shot of theirs was absorbed by an invisible barrier surrounding Noah. On the contrary, every shot fired by the battle sisters struck true, their explosive rounds tearing through light armor and reducing their enemies to clouds of blood.
The AI mech didn't fire — its firepower was overkill for the situation.
Still, with only the battle sisters in action, the skirmish lasted mere moments. By the time their weapons fell silent, there wasn't a single enemy left standing.
Noah gently pressed Cassia's shoulder, his tone cold but polite: "Miss Cassia, I believe you owe me an explanation."
"I-I… I'm sorry…"
Cassia looked flustered at his distant demeanor, her hands nervously gesturing in the air as she tried to explain:"I'm Cassia Orsellio, a heiress of the Orsellio family. Frelic staged a rebellion to kill me."
Noah's voice was unyielding: "Then how did you survive?"
"It was Theobald. He's been protecting me…"
Cassia whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. Noah's suspicion nearly broke her heart.
She couldn't understand why Noah, instead of comforting her, seemed so cold. This wasn't how the hero-rescues-damsel trope in novels was supposed to go!

Sister Argenta raised her weapon again, aiming down the corridor at the sound of approaching footsteps. Soon, an elderly man, leading several soldiers, appeared in view.
The old man's gaze swept over the carnage before settling on Cassia. His milk-white eyes lit with hope: "Heiress! The Emperor be praised; you're unharmed!"
"It was this gentleman who saved me," Cassia said softly, her emotions still low.
The old man exhaled in relief, studying Noah as he asked:"You don't look like a pirate taking advantage of the chaos here. May I ask your name?"
Noah didn't mince words:"I'm Noah von Valancius, ruler of the Von Valancius dynasty and a licensed Rogue Trader. My fleet had a mishap during a Warp jump, and our navigator perished. I came to the Orsellio family's station in search of a navigator."
"A navigator…" Theobald's gaze instinctively flicked toward Cassia.
After a long silence, he spoke:"As you've seen, a rebellion has just occurred on this station, costing many lives. The heiress and I are the only navigators left. But…"
He coughed, a streak of blue blood running down his chin.
Wiping it away, Theobald said bitterly:"My time is short; I cannot fulfill the role of navigator."
Noah gestured toward Cassia. "Isn't she here?"
"No!"
Theobald rejected immediately, while the soldiers beside him gripped their weapons.
Cassia quickly interjected: "I'll go with you! Please don't trouble Theobald!"
Her pleading eyes begged both Noah and Theobald.
Would you stop getting in my way?
She had the knowledge of future events and could have prevented this rebellion. But she hadn't. She knew that without the rebellion, as a heiress, she'd never have the chance to leave with the merchant.
Though many would die, Cassia didn't care. She only wanted to be with the one she loved.
Now, despite her blunder during their first meeting, she clung to the hope that leaving with him would still mean victory.
"Very well," Theobald relented after assessing the power imbalance between his forces and the merchant's group.
"You can take the heiress, but I must ask a favor of you."
"What kind of favor?" Noah asked.
"The heiress can temporarily serve as your fleet's navigator. But I need you to take her safely to Regent Arento, the Orsellio family's representative in the Koronus Expanse. I assure you, the Orsellio family will reward your efforts. The Regent will arrange a replacement navigator for you."
"No problem. I'll take her to meet the Regent."
Theobald stared intently at Noah, only relaxing once the latter gave his promise.
Though there was an element of coercion, he had no better options at this point.
Frelic's rebellion had already dealt a severe blow to the family. While the remaining soldiers under his command were elite, they still stood little chance against the Battle Sisters in a direct fight. If they tried to stop Noah from taking the Heiress, Theobald had no doubt that Noah would immediately order his troops to open fire—after all, most Rogue Traders had no qualms about occasionally doubling as pirates.
In such a scenario, not only would the Heiress be taken, but the entire station would likely be destroyed. If things reached that point, the family might never learn what had transpired here, and the Heiress would never be recovered.
Reaching a deal under these circumstances was undoubtedly the best outcome.
As long as they survived, they could report the rebellion and the Heiress's whereabouts to the family. It wouldn't take long for the family to notice the station's loss of communication and send someone to investigate within weeks.
At that point, even if the Rogue Traders refused to return the Heiress, the family could bring a fleet to retrieve her.
Of course, Theobald wasn't worried about the traders reneging on their deal.
He didn't believe any Rogue Trader would refuse a request from a family of Navigators. Escorting the Heiress to the Regent would not only cost them nothing but also earn them the friendship of the Orsellio family.
The reward for this transaction was exceptionally generous, leaving these greedy rogue traders no reason to decline.
