Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Electrocuted
Yusuf Zuck knew his way around electrical work; before he brought his sister to the capital for school, he had worked on water and electricity installation jobs in his hometown county. Such work was technical, well-paid, and less physically demanding. Nowadays, even college graduates were no match for skilled workers with practical abilities.
About a month ago, he spent several days at the job fair and interviewed with a few companies, but in the end, he was sent home to wait for a callback and was not hired. Although he was an electrician, he lacked an electrician's certification, which made it impossible for him to be employed for that role.
Later, by some stroke of luck, he was recruited by the Fung Capital Group.
Logically speaking, not just anyone could be a security guard; employers often preferred ex-servicemen for such roles. Yusuf, however, had never served in the military. Fortunately, his height and build were sufficient, and he had martial arts training and had even won awards. So, when he presented his certificates during the interview, the recruiters immediately passed him.
Entering the company required one to fill out a series of forms. One section asked about other skills, in which Yusuf listed electrical work and driving. This caught the attention of the recruitment HR manager. So, when there was an issue with the electrical circuit in the boss's office and the company's electrician was on leave, the HR department thought of him.
Quickly, Yusuf and Samuel Ross ascended to the top floor—the 28th—without any conversation. Ms. Wilcox's secretary was already waiting for them by the elevators.
Ms. Wilcox's secretary was also a young beauty. Yusuf hadn't been at the company very long, but he had seen the secretary a few times. Her family name was Dong, so everyone called her Secretary Dong or Big Secretary Dong.
"Ms. Wilcox is furious," said Secretary Dong to Samuel, the department head, "you shouldn't go in. Wait outside. And Yusuf, once you're inside, immediately check and repair the office's electrical circuit. This is the second time it's happened. Last time, Cohan Reid guaranteed he fixed it, but it's only been a few days, and there's a problem again. The HR department already notified Cohan Reid to collect his wages and leave. If you, Yusuf, can fix the electrical problems once and for all, it's highly likely you'll take over Cohan Reid's position." Secretary Dong didn't show any particular enthusiasm; she simply recited the instructions mechanically, appearing very cautious. Despite being Secretary Dong, she understood that the boss wasn't easy to serve.
Yusuf had never met this so-called Ms. Wilcox. Although he had been working there for a month, he was mostly stationed at the entrance hall or the outdoor parking lot. Ms. Wilcox commuted from the underground parking garage by elevator, so up until now, he didn't even know what kind of "demon" she was.
Indeed, in the eyes of many, Ms. Wilcox was a "demon". When he overheard other security guards chatting informally, some called her the "Ice Mountain Goddess" or nicknamed her "the Tiger".
Many times, when people brought up Ms. Wilcox, they'd say, "Don't let the Tiger see, don't let the Tiger hear, don't let the Tiger find out".
The Tiger was the king, the queen of Fung Capital.
However, the rumors said the Tiger was quite young, unmarried, and breathtakingly beautiful—far surpassing any female celebrity.
Secretary Dong gently opened Ms. Wilcox's door and Yusuf, holding a pair of pliers and a screwdriver, quickly scanned the interior of the office.
There were people inside, two of them standing with bowed heads in front of a desk, and a woman's scolding voice carried through.
"Dismiss him immediately; his skills are fundamentally flawed. The company doesn't support the useless. And what about you, HR department? Haven't I mentioned before that the company should have two electricians? Why haven't we hired the second one yet? The bonus for your HR department this month is canceled!" It was severe criticism; Yusuf couldn't help but smirk. The Tiger indeed was a Tiger; when she roared, everyone had no choice but to bow their heads.
"Ms. Wilcox, Yusuf from the Security Department is here. His resume says he can do plumbing and electricity," said Secretary Dong softly from the doorway.
"Hmm, let him take a look at what's wrong first. But make sure to be safe. The rest of you, go and immediately hire another electrician. Plumbing and electricity are crucial for our hotel; we cannot afford any mishaps!" Ms. Wilcox's tone seemed to have softened a bit.
"Yes," said the two HR managers, who then turned and left.
By this time, Yusuf Zuck had been taken by the secretary to a wall, where the power source for the office desk computers was located.
"Is there still power in the room? Are the other power sources working?" Zuck asked in a low voice as he dismantled the wall power source.
"The lights are on. Apart from this power source and the one in the bedroom that can't be used, the others are normal," Ms. Wilcox answered. She had managed to stand behind him without his notice. Of course, her voice was a bit cold and deep.
"Oh, it's a minor issue, I'll fix it right away. However, this power outlet is of inferior quality and the previous connection was not secure, which is very dangerous and could easily cause a fire. If all hotel rooms have this kind of power outlet, I suggest they be replaced immediately. Also, this outlet must be replaced and we need to buy a new one," Yusuf Zuck said as he took apart the charred outlet and found that the live wire was not securely connected to the outlet, causing it to burn out of shape.
"What's your name again? Lift your head up and let me see," suddenly, while Zuck was still handling the two wires, Ms. Wilcox said something that baffled even her secretary.
"My name is Yus...)" Zuck turned and lifted his head, only to see a somewhat familiar face.
"Oh, it really is you!" Ms. Wilcox almost jumped up, unbelievably surprised, and her eyes were filled with limitless joy.
Upon realizing that Ms. Wilcox was the beautiful woman he had encountered eating spicy hotpot, Yusuf Zuck's hands trembled. His day had already been unlucky enough, yet now he had bumped into the woman he had teased, who also happened to be his boss? Zuck felt an urge to flip out, and he also managed a smile uglier than a cry, intending to greet the beautiful lady.
However, just at that moment, he must have accidentally touched the live wire because suddenly, his whole body went numb, followed by convulsions shaking his entire frame.
"Ah..." When they saw Zuck's body convulsing uncontrollably as if shocked by electricity, both the beautiful boss and the secretary screamed. Even a fool could tell the security guard had been electrocuted.
The two women were terrified, simply screaming foolishly, unsure what to do, while Zuck crouched in the corner, convulsing and shaking like someone who had just smoked something strong, and his hair began to singe and smoke started rising from his head...
"Snap, snap~" A few seconds later, following his convulsions and the women's screams, a "snap" sound came simultaneously from the wall power source and Zuck's body. His hand finally broke free from the power source, and he tumbled to the ground, unconscious.
"Call an ambulance..." the beautiful boss screamed...
"Chief Samuel, Chief Samuel..." the secretary, sobbing, ran out like the wind.
At that moment, Zuck felt his consciousness leave his body; he saw his own motionless, hair-singed self on the ground, saw the beautiful boss covering her face and calling out, and saw Chief Samuel Ross rushing in.
"Damn it, am I... am I dying?" Zuck suddenly felt an overwhelming fear!
