Chapter 10: The Exchange Student
Two days had passed since that incident at the abandoned building. It was Monday, and the cold morning made the sleep in my eyes feel heavier as I walked to school.
"I hate mornings," I murmured, yawning.
I was wearing the school uniform, white shirt and red, along with my usual red fedora hat. The only difference this time was the bandage on my face.
As I walked, the school came into view: white walls, windows painted gold, and a dome with a golden star on top of the building. This was my school, Star Academy, one of the most prestigious in the city.
I entered the school and looked around. Everything seemed normal. Apparently, I was the only one who had a chaotic weekend.
However, something caught my attention. The girls seemed unusually happy—almost euphoric. They whispered things like:
"Do you know who's coming?"
"Yes, I can't believe it!"
"Kyaa!"
I wondered what they were talking about. Did something good happen? I had no idea.
With those thoughts swirling in my mind, I headed to my locker, put my things away, and went to my classroom.
On Monday mornings, Star Academy always held an assembly in the gym to sing the national anthem and announce the week's activities. However, I decided to skip it and went straight to the classroom. Honestly, I wasn't in the mood to participate.
The classroom was empty, and the silence brought me a sense of tranquility, peace, and serenity. Okay, I'll admit it, I took the chance to nap.
It wasn't long before the students returned to their classrooms after the assembly.
"Mila! What happened to you?"
"Huh? Oh, this? The bandage? It's nothing, I just hurt myself while running, hahaha."
"Jeez, you need to be more careful. Don't you know a girl's face is sacred? How careless can you be?" said Gris, Her eyes looked worried beneath her rectangular frame glasses.
The classroom quickly filled up. We were waiting for our homeroom teacher, Miss Noir, to start the first class of the day. Meanwhile, Gris kept lecturing me. Sometimes I'm not sure if she's my friend or my mom.
Just a few minutes before the bell rang, Claire walked in, the person I least wanted to see.
"What can you expect from a monkey like Mila? You know the saying: A monkey dressed in silk is still a monkey." The annoying petite girl swayed her blonde curls mockingly.
"H-Hey!"
"Fufufu, don't get mad, Velerth. I'm just speaking the truth," Claire said with an air of superiority.
Seriously, how annoying can this girl be? I didn't want to argue, but she left me no choice. I admit Claire is pretty, but her personality ruined her beauty. Such a shame. However, she had a weakness: during swimming classes, I'd noticed how she looked at other girls' chests and then desperately glanced at her own.
I know it's a dirty trick, but I didn't have any other choice. Besides, she started this.
"You're really talented, Claire! Your words cut deep. I don't think I could ever beat you."
"Oh? Well, at least you recognize my superiority, Velerth. That's a step forward. Now if you'll excu—"
"However, it seems that same sharpness cut your small chest… Table-chan—Oops, I mean Claire."
Claire froze, a shadow covering her eyes. Her hand trembled in the air. Gris looked nervously between the two of us while the rest of the class watched closely, hoping for a fight.
A vein bulged on Claire's forehead as she clenched her teeth in fury and yelled:
"That's it! I'm going to kill her!"
The whole classroom started chanting:
"Fight! Fight! Fight!"
Claire charged at me with her hands raised, but one of her friends, Yanis, a girl with a chestnut-colored French bob haircut, picked her up like a child.
"L-Let me go, Yanis! I'm going to teach Velerth a lesson!" Claire kicked her little legs like a child. Seriously, how immature could she be?
"Claire, remember how important today is. We can't ruin our image. We need to stay presentable!" Yanis reminded her.
"Oh, right. I completely forgot! You're right, Yanis! My prince is coming today, and I need to win him over with my charms." Claire took out a bottle of perfume and started spraying it enthusiastically.
Cough cough "Your prince?" I asked, confused.
Claire gave me a disdainful look. "You don't know, Velerth? Well, coming from a gorilla like you, I'm not surprised."
Grr… I hate this girl.
"Today, the famous teen model, Warren, is transferring to our school!"
"Kyaaa!" The collective squeal from the girls was deafening. Warren? Who was that? I'd never heard of him.
Claire continued excitedly "At first, I thought it was just a rumor, but this morning, I saw him talking with Miss Noir. Do you know what that means? He's going to be in this class!"
The room erupted in cheers from the girls, while the boys looked visibly annoyed.
I glanced at Gris and noticed her blushing. Even Gris was impressed by this guy? He must be as handsome as they claimed.
At that moment, Miss Noir entered the classroom with her usual tired expression. Everyone quickly took their seats, and the room fell silent.
"Good grief, what's with all the noise so early? Your yelling can be heard all over the school, girls. Don't tell me Velerth infected you all with her illness."
Illness?
Miss Noir continued "Oh, right. We have a new student joining us today, so make him feel welcome." Then, looking toward the door, she said "Warren, please come in and introduce yourself to your classmates."
A young man walked in with firm, confident steps. He had black hair, pale skin, a black patch in his right eye, and dark gloves on both hands.
What caught my attention was the symbol on his patch and his black gloves. The first one seemed like a combination of a spiral and a sun, and the second one looked like some kind of creature with sharp teeth laughing."
To be honest, he wasn't my type, though I admit he had a certain charm. He would undoubtedly steal any other girl's heart.
With a serious expression, Warren scanned the classroom and said in a deep, pleasant voice:
"Hello my name is Warren Monson Germain, From now on, we'll be studying together, so please take care of me." Then, he smiled slightly and added
"Let's get along, alright?"
"Kyaaa" The girls' screams were deafening, while the boys groaned even louder.
Miss Noir sighed. "So much noise… Alright, Warren, let's see... Oh! How about you sit next to Velerth? She's the girl with the red hat."
What? N-next to me?
Warren and I exchanged glances. But his gaze turned cold as if he were looking at an enemy. I immediately felt a bad feeling, as if that guy was a dangerous person."
