Chapter 142
Chapter 142. Three Companion And The Gunshot Of Death
A woman’s scream echoed.
When I arrived at the scene, a girl, tears streaming down her face, was sitting, attempting to thrust a blade into herself.
I had to save her, no matter what!
I scattered the goblins with my photon sword and stood before the girl.
Then, I froze in place, my breath caught.
Laugh at me if you want.
The elf girl, trembling in fear, sitting with tears in her eyes.
Her overwhelming beauty left me captivated. Honestly, of all the people I’ve ever seen—on TV, actresses, or even just people passing by—she was, by far, the most stunning. Maybe I had underestimated elves as a race.
Recently, the “man” inside me had awakened, and though I’d never felt much from looking at women before, the moment I saw her, that inner man roared.
If this was what they called love at first sight, I couldn’t deny it.
I shook my head furiously.
What am I thinking?!
I yelled, as if to scold myself.
“Are you alright?!”
=============================================
After that, I carried the elf girl on my back and broke through the enemy’s lines.
It was a nightmare.
I thought I was going to die several times, but somehow, it seemed today was a day of miracles, and we managed to break through the enemy’s encirclement.
Even I was shocked by how lucky I was.
But, even luck has its limits. Thanks to my mastery of Wave Energy Techniques, I was able to keep running with someone on my back, but I was getting exhausted.
Running under the scorching sun only made it worse. Normally, you wouldn’t last five minutes. The sun overhead didn’t offer even a sliver of shade. I cursed at the blazing sun and guzzled down some water. I wanted to give some to the girl as well, but she seemed to have passed out from exhaustion.
She’s not dead, right?
Through my thick military uniform, it was hard to gauge her temperature, but she didn’t seem cold.
Though she might just be roasting under the sun…
“Gyaoooaaaah!”
The scream of a beast jolted me back to attention. I had almost lost consciousness for a second. We had already put some distance from their nest, and jagged rocks were scattered around. I couldn’t afford to let my guard down, as enemies could pop out from anywhere.
I knocked away three goblins with my photon sword. In that instant, my vision twisted.
“Damn…”
It felt similar to when you collapse with a bad fever—my mental fatigue from overusing the photon sword had hit its limit.
My knees buckled. I could feel the disruption in my wave energy. But this wasn’t the place to collapse.
I gritted my teeth hard enough to crush them and lifted my head. Through my blurred vision, I spotted two more goblins. Instinctively, I pulled out my SIG SAUER P229 and fired at the green beast. Though I hit its chest, it wasn’t a fatal shot. If anything, it got even angrier and charged at me. Compared to the photon sword, the difference in power was huge.
I held the gun with both hands and emptied the remaining rounds into the two goblins. About half of them hit. The two fell to the ground, riddled with 9mm bullets.
Without time for earplugs, my ears rang loudly. I felt like most of my senses had been stolen.
The elf on my back seemed to have woken up and was saying something, but I couldn’t make it out. Almost unconsciously, I dropped the empty magazine and reloaded a new one.
This isn’t the kind of skill a Japanese person should have…
The girl on my back shook my body and pointed ahead. Following her lead, I saw a goblin closing in. Reflexively, I fired. Four shots took down the beast. She pointed in another direction. Through my blurry vision, I saw green silhouettes emerging from the mist. Without hesitation, I fired five more rounds.
The next target… I set the girl down and took a knee. I fired three shots at the last goblin. Then the slide locked back—out of ammo.
The goblin I shot roared, dragging its feet toward me, wielding a bone in its hand. Was it trying to use it as a weapon?
I stood up and prepared to face it with Tornado Martial Arts.
But contrary to my intentions, my vision narrowed and darkened. I couldn’t even stand. My knees trembled as if they were sewn to the ground.
“…Run, kid.”
Looking up at the approaching goblin, I thought, if this is the end, it’s not too bad. The only regret I had was that I didn’t get to have a smoke before dying.
I smirked and awaited death.
“…?”
Tired, I slowly opened my eyes. A massive iron spear, thick as an arm, jutted from the goblin’s chest.
“I kept you waiting.”
It was the dreadlocked blonde warrior, Yaralai.
=============================================
Now, the dwarf Hagg and elf Yaralai were fending off the goblins swarming the camper.
As for me, embarrassingly, I was lying in the cabin’s bed.
“Are you feeling better?”
The one tending to me with a wet towel was Yutis, a traveling woman I’d met on the road. I had escorted her to Hanshon Town, so why was she here? Still, my recovery took priority over questions.
Yutis was surprisingly good at nursing. The elf girl was also lying in the bed next to me, and Yutis was efficiently caring for both of us.
Faf was sitting on the couch, waiting for his phone to charge and sipping wine. What a laid-back guy.
“Yeah, I feel a lot better. Thanks.”
“Don’t move yet. You’re more exhausted than you think.”
“You know a lot.”
“I… helped a doctor for a short time.”
“Really? Then why are you traveling?”
In this era, even traveling to the next town was rare.
“Well…”
“Oh, sorry. I didn’t mean to pry.”
I realized I’d been a little insensitive as she hesitated.
I bought four bottles of Energy Drink (Small) = 198 yen from the comfort of my bed.
Balance remaining: 42,688 yen.
I downed two of them immediately and stood next to the elf girl.
“This is an energy drink. Have one. If it’s not too hard, feel free to have a second.”
“Energy drink?”
“Yeah, it works wonders.”
To me, it was like juice, but for people in this world, it probably had a much stronger effect.
“Hey, you shouldn’t be getting up yet…”
“I’m fine. The medicine kicked in.”
Ignoring Yutis’s concern, I headed outside. Leaving the air-conditioned paradise, I stepped back into the scorching hell.
As soon as I was outside, Yaralai flew over.
“Hey, how’s it looking?”
“We’re in a lull for now. More importantly, I owe you thanks.”
“Don’t mention it. I owed you one.”
“No, it is I who owe you. You saved my daughter.”
“No need to…”
I crossed my arms and looked up at the sky.
“Daughter?”
“Yes, my daughter.”
I guess I didn’t mishear.
“Um…”
The subject of the conversation slowly descended from the cabin.
“I’m Lalaila. Yaralai and Ruruil’s daughter, Lalaila. Thank you for saving me.”
The elf girl bowed her head. When she raised her face, it shone with a smile as radiant as the sun illuminating the forest.
I was probably blushing.
“Hmm…”
Why is Faf recording this? Damn it…
