Gon Fricks.
It's currently nine o'clock in the morning. Well rested after yesterday's not the easiest day, at least for Killua, we didn't drag our feet and headed straight to the hospital. At first I was a little worried that the operation might be delayed because the doctors might be busy with other patients, but Leorio said I was worried for nothing. He also said that considering which doctor would be treating us, there would definitely be no problem.
Hmm... what kind of doctor does he have? He was telling us yesterday that he was interning with some unrealistically cool doctor, for whom such an operation is no big deal. He said it with such pride that I thought he was a real fan of him. I guess it's good to have people in your life to look up to.
- So you're interning here, Leorio? - I turned to him, looking at the city centre hospital we'd just arrived at.
- Yes. It may not be the best hospital in the world, but it's certainly one of the best.
- Is it because of the good technical equipment?
- That, too. But mostly it's because it has the best doctor in the world. - and once again he says it with pride.
- Well... well, let's go inside then.
Inside the building itself, there was nothing remarkable. Clean and spacious white coloured corridors, with patients and doctors walking around constantly, and some unusual smell coming from some of the rooms. Is that alcohol?
I don't know anything here, so I just have to follow Leorio to lead us to this very doctor.
I'm a little worried about meeting Bisky tomorrow on some important business. And from the looks of it, we'll have to do it without Killua. It'll probably take quite a while to recover from the operation. Well, that's my business, not Killua's. It's my business, and he came to this city solely at my request, so he doesn't need to be involved. Though he'll probably want to help me anyway, no matter what.
- There he is. - Leorio said, pointing at the man standing in the middle of the corridor.
- So this is the doctor you were talking about?
In the middle of the corridor stood a man in a white doctor's coat looking thoughtfully out of the window and seemingly oblivious to us. At first glance there was nothing particularly remarkable about him. As mentioned earlier, he was dressed in a doctor's coat, with a dark jumper underneath, and grey, dishevelled hair on his head. He looked a little sluggish and sleep-deprived, which was confirmed by the circles under his eyes, which were visible from under his glasses. But that wasn't all that was remarkable, it was something else entirely: his age. Judging by his appearance, he was definitely no more than thirty years old. Perhaps even around twenty-five.
But how...? How was it that being so young he was able to achieve such a reputation? Do his skills really match what Leorio told me about him? I find that hard to believe. Usually, the best and most experienced doctors are at least middle-aged, and often even older. But how did he manage to achieve this? Is he a medical genius?
- Hello Doctor,' Leorio addressed the doctor. - These are my friends Gon and Killua, I told you about them on the phone yesterday.
- Pleased to meet you, Dr Diamond. - I said politely.
- Nice to meet you too. - said Killua.
Dr Diamond looked at us thoughtfully for almost ten seconds. He didn't even look at us, he glared at us. It made me uncomfortable. And then finally he spoke.
- And you~... from what universe?
?..? What?
The question almost made me and Killua's mouths drop open. I expected to hear a lot of things, but not like this. What does he mean? What universe?
- I'm sorry?
- Which universe are you from?
- Erm... this one. - I was unsure.
- Oh, good. And this boy, I take it, is the sick one? - he pointed to Killua. - Well, in that case, we'll cure him. - Dr Diamond spoke sluggishly, but at the same time a little amusement was clearly audible in his voice. - He's my patient from now on. He's pretty good at reading lips, though. You don't want to keep him like this? He could spend more time training his eyes and forget about his hearing, and thus become as sharp as an eagle. And if you add some feathers, he could become an eagle himself. Ha-ha-ha! But wait, what am I talking about? There's a lot more to it than feathers. You've got to have the right skeletal structure and the right organs, not to mention the genetic component. I'm sorry, but he's not going to be an eagle. I can't help you there. An eagle man at most. A pathetic imitation. And even for that, not only me, but him as well. I hope you understand me well.
....
- Listen,' I said quietly to Leorio. - I think your Doctor needs a doctor. He's not normal!
- Don't be afraid. He has some oddities, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he's a great doctor.
- You think that's just some weirdness? I'm afraid to trust Killua's life to a man like that. There's no telling what he might think during an operation.
- And I'm telling you he's a man you can rely on.
Shit, I really don't understand Leorio. What did he see in this man to be so fond of him, even with his strange behaviour? Although in principle... I've heard that geniuses in various fields are often weirdos to one degree or another. Could that be the case here?
Meanwhile, Killua, like me, was as baffled by Dr Diamond's speech, who was looking at us, then at the ceiling, then somewhere else. Going under the knife of such a man is a dubious idea, and Killua seems to agree, judging by the way he looks at the Doctor.
This doctor's services will probably have to be withdrawn.
- You'll have to excuse us, Doctor, but...
- Doctor! - suddenly someone shouted softly from outside. It was a nurse who was carrying a man on a gurney who was holding his stomach and writhing in pain. - We need your help here. He's got phlegmonous appendicitis, and we need to operate quickly before it gets worse.
- Appendicitis, you say? - he said with a heavy sigh. - I was planning on doing another operation. Doesn't anyone else want to do it?
- All the other doctors are busy, you're the only one available.
- Ehhhhh...
The doctor walked over to the gurney, but he certainly wasn't planning on taking the patient to the operating theatre. I was curious to see what would happen next.
Dr Diamond took a scalpel out of the pocket of his gown, took a good look at it, and then turned his gaze to the patient, who was being held down by a nurse to keep him still. In the next instant, so that I hardly noticed, Dr Diamond swung his scalpel and with filigree precision made an incision on the right side of the patient's abdomen, then with his own hands he pulled the flesh apart, took another swing and pulled out what appeared to be an appendix. Another second passed and the patient's stomach was sewn up with perfect sutures. And the most amazing thing is that I couldn't even understand when and from where the Doctor had managed to get these threads.
That was it. The operation was complete and lasted about five seconds in total. The patient, from the look of him, didn't even have time to feel anything. The nurse didn't hesitate and took him away.
Killua and I were truly shocked by what we saw. All we could do was just stand silently with our mouths open and try to fully comprehend everything. Meanwhile, Leorio was just full of pride for his idol.
What was that just now?! I didn't think such a thing could really exist! At least now I can see why Leorio admires him so much.
- Slower this time,' Leorio said to Dr Diamond. - Normally you can do this in three seconds.
- I just didn't get enough sleep today, so I was a little slow. So, shall we move on to the operation on the lad's ears?
Killua and I nodded silently.
- Well, then, follow me to the operating theatre.
Following Dr Diamond was Leorio, followed by us.
I wonder what Leorio's reaction was when he first met this man? Did he react as we did, or did he endure it? Probably the latter, because otherwise he would never have made it as the Doctor's apprentice. Although there's also the possibility that when he did meet him, the Doctor was behaving more appropriately.
- What do you reckon? - I asked Killua.
- His head is definitely not right, but judging by the way he removed that man's appendix, I can trust him with my ears. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what's in a doctor's head, it's how he does his job. And he seems to be doing an excellent job.
- You're probably right about that.
It's really hard to argue with that. And besides... maybe we're jumping to conclusions about what's in the Doctor's head. Maybe he's just playing a joke and we've just written him off as a lunatic. It's possible, but we'll only know for sure when we've had more time with him. If that happens at all.
We came to the operating theatre, where in the middle of the room there was a place for the operation, which was hidden behind a white opaque screen, which by the way was quite strange. I've heard that usually in operating theatres everything is open without any screens. Apparently that's the way the Doctor prefers to work and everything here is arranged as he likes.
- Lie down, patient,' said Dr Killua. - We'll start soon.
Killua obediently lay down on the operating table and the Doctor closed it with a screen.
- I need to do a little preparation. You can sit down for now.
There was the only chair in the room, which I decided to sit on and think about various things for a while.
I wonder how long this operation will take? He can remove an appendix in five seconds, Leorio claims three, provided he's not tired. But it'll probably take longer than that. Because ears are not appendixes. You can't just cut it off and sew it up. Although I don't know anything about it and I don't have a medical degree, so I can't really judge. In that case, we'll just have to wait.
Meanwhile, the door opened and someone else came in, but I was completely absorbed in my own thoughts and didn't pay any attention to it. Probably some other doctor and patient.
- Hello. - the man addressed the Doctor. - Well, what's up with my analyses and scans? Nothing serious?
- It's nothing... there's a severe sprain somewhere, some muscles are slightly torn, and there are also small cracks in some bones. As far as I know, it's nothing serious for you.
- Thanks, cos I thought it was something worse. So there's nothing else I need and I can go?
- Yeah, go ahead. I'm in the middle of an operation. Good luck, Bellew.
Hmm, he's a good conversationalist. He's probably just playing a joke on us, that's all.
I wonder what Killua will do when he recovers. Apart from helping me, of course. Does he have his own business in town? My biggest fear is that he'll want to get back together with his abusers. Those guys seem pretty strong, so it could end badly. It's best not to do it alone. At the very least, I can help him too. I wish I knew who the attackers were, and Killua hasn't told me much about them. It would be nice to know their names.
- So,' Dr Diamond said, and then he thought for a few seconds. - Soon we can begin. Leorio, get everything ready. In the meantime, it's lunchtime.
- Э? What? Wait, what's lunch?! It's only ten o'clock! It's a long way from lunch.
- I'll take it in advance. - He said and walked out the door, saying to me, 'If you want, you can come with me. I wouldn't mind chatting to someone while I eat.
What? Lunch with Dr Diamond? Honestly, I don't know. I don't really want to eat, but I could just chat. At least I'd get to know the man better. I don't think Killua would mind waiting.
I followed the Doctor and soon we came to the hospital canteen, where there was no one else but us and one cleaning lady. We sat down at a small table and soon the Doctor was brought his lunch of soup and tea, but I declined the Doctor's offer.
Well, here's a good chance to get to know the man better. Let's see how normal he really is and whether he can be trusted to listen to Killua after all.
- Tell me Doctor, how did you meet Leorio? He's in your practice, isn't he? How he's done.
- Ah, Leorio, you've been friends with him for a long time, haven't you? He started practising with me at the beginning of this year. For some reason, he shunned me at first and wanted to practice with others. It was probably because I once decided to do an experiment right in front of him: I drank a glass of urine and then ate an herb that was considered to be medicinal. This was done in order to test the effectiveness of treatment with alternative medicine. Urine turned out to be ineffective, but herbs can really help. The main thing is to pick the right ones, or instead of treatment you can catch diarrhoea and almost die, which once happened to me when I was a little younger. Heh heh heh...those were the days.....
....
And just when I thought he was a normal person, suddenly he says this. I don't understand... how you can talk so casually about diarrhoea and urine during a meal and still continue eating. If someone said that in front of me, I'd lose my appetite at the very least. But for him, it's completely normal. He says this and smiles, as if with warmth in his soul remembers the times of his youth, although he himself is still quite young.
- Well, Leorio's not a bad guy. When he saw me perform surgery, he immediately asked to be my apprentice. He is quite good at it and is driven by a sincere desire to treat people, not just to make money, for which he can be respected. Except that sometimes he can be quite fiery, and for a doctor this is not the best quality. You need to be able to always keep cool, to make a cut in the right place with perfect precision. But he still has a lot to learn.
- It's hard to argue with that. So you have no respect for people who treat people for money?
- Not at all.
- Why not? Even you have to make a living.
- You misunderstand me. I don't respect those who treat people for money, not those who do it for money. The difference is that the former are driven only by the desire to make money, and the latter seek to treat people. For them, money is just a bonus for services, but not the main goal. And those who seek only to earn money... these are not even doctors, but the most common businessmen. Faggots, to put it simply.
Even though I'm not eating anything right now, I'm still choking on it. He's always spoken quite politely and intelligently before, but now he's suddenly swearing.
- So you despise people like that?
- Exactly. A man like that doesn't care about the patient's health. He doesn't even have patients, only clients. That's why these people don't even have the right to be called doctors. A real doctor should treat any patient, regardless of his financial status. From the homeless to the rich. There should be no difference. Only such a person has the right to be called a doctor. The rest are just liars.
Hmm... he has a very categorical and rigid position. He seems to be a man of principles. You can respect him for that.
- I must admit, I, and everyone else, admire your skills. Where did you learn to do that?
- It's experience. Experience, but also desire and talent. The three most important ingredients, without which you can't do anything.
- And what about labour? Because if you don't work hard to achieve a goal, you won't get anywhere.
- There is something in it, but I can't agree completely. You have to work hard, of course, but talent is more important. No matter how hard you work, you can't reach the pinnacle of excellence if you don't have any talent for it. So you have to do what you have a predisposition for and only then you can become really good at it. And if you do what you don't need to do, you will only waste your time and energy, and you won't be able to achieve something great. And if you don't want to do it, you won't be able to enjoy it. And doing something without pleasure is a real torture. If you have desire and talent, you will gain experience over time, and even then you can become a master in your business. That's why I've emphasised these three components. Experience, talent and desire.
This may be a little offensive to some, but I'm afraid Dr Diamond is right. I've spent a tremendous amount of time and effort to achieve my goals and tear down the barriers in my way. I've worked my arse off, but it's important to remember that my talent has played a part. Back when Killua and I were trained by Wing, he said that we had a great and very rare talent that allowed us to learn how to use Nen quickly. He said we were very rare. It follows that Killua and I's talent played a big part in the future, so Dr Diamond's words are absolutely correct.
- Perhaps you are right. Your skill is undeniable, but still... Leorio even told me last night that you once had to perform an operation with your eyes closed. Is that even possible? He wasn't lying?
- Of course he lied.
- Ha, I knew it!
- I didn't perform the operation with my eyes closed. I did it while completely blind.
- Ahem, ahem! What?!
- It was New Year's Eve. I was working the night shift with a few other doctors. A man was brought in unexpectedly who needed emergency heart surgery. I immediately went into action, but the problem was that the man was completely insane. He grabbed a jar of acid nearby and threw it in my eyes. That's when I went completely blind. I couldn't see anything and it hurt terribly, but the surgery had to be done. Finding a surgical hammer nearby, I performed the classic method of anaesthesia - I hit the patient on the head and knocked him out. Then, completely blind, I performed a heart operation. And it was a success.
- I don't even know what to say. It's just unbelievable.
- But you know what the worst part was?
-What?
- I told you there were a few other doctors on duty with me at the time. Two guys and two girls. They were young and had just started working as doctors. So... they wouldn't help me. 'Come on, it's a new year! Let's relax and have a drink!' - they said to me at the time. Not only were they already drunk, but they wanted to have a gangbang. When they brought that man in, they decided to call it a day and continue their celebration. That's why I operated alone. And when I was done with that man, I went straight into surgery on my own eyes. I did that alone, too. Blindly and from memory. This operation was also successful and I got my sight back. And after all that, I decided to punish those doctors. I decided to castrate the boys and cut off the girls' tits.
- Ahem, ahem, ahem, ahem! That's the punishment?!
- Yes, and it would be fair. By blowing it all off and doing what they did, they've shown themselves to be scum, thus dishonouring the title of doctor. A real doctor should always be ready to treat his patient. It's unacceptable to get drunk and forget about things.
-So, did you punish them?
- No, but I almost did. I was about to do it to one of the blokes, but I was stopped by the cleaners and the watchmen on duty. Eventually those doctors quit, not wanting to work in the same hospital with me. I ended up regretting it for a while afterwards. Regretting that I never got justice for them.
- That's pretty harsh.
That's not exactly the kind of story I was expecting to hear today. Apparently the Doctor's a real fanatic about his profession. And that's certainly frightening. But at least he's someone you can rely on. He puts the patient's health first. We can only hope that Leorio will be able to learn all his skills and become just as cool. Apart from the negative aspects of it all, of course.
Meanwhile, the Doctor had finished his soup and started to drink his tea, but as soon as he took a sip, he immediately threw the cup and smashed it on the floor. He did it with a face as calm as if he had just thrown out the rubbish, not broken the cup.
- Sugar,' he said. - This tea had sugar in it. I hate that. When you add sugar, tea loses its health benefits, it has a lot more calories, and the sugar dissolved in the liquid can absorb vitamin B1, which is vital for proper nervous system function. That's why I only drink tea without sugar.
- Oh, my God! - shouted the cleaning lady who came running towards us. - Doctor, come on, really! Could you not react so violently? But if you don't feel sorry for the cups, then feel sorry for me. I'm the one who has to clean it up!
- It's the cooks' own fault for putting sugar in my tea.
- They're new to the job and don't know your every whim.
- It's not my fault. It's your fault.
- But try not to react so violently anyway.
- I will... And now,' he said to me. - I've finished my lunch. Let's go and start the operation on your friend.
I silently got up and followed him.
Yeah, and yet, as it turns out, he's definitely not at home. But at least he knows what he's doing, so Killua's life can be entrusted to him.
That Dr Diamond is crazy after all.
***
- Killua! - I shouted with joy.
- Gon!
- At last you can hear!
It's unbelievable! In less than thirty minutes, Dr Diamond had successfully completed the operation. And now Killua could hear everything as before.
- It's a miracle! - Killua marvelled. - How could it be done in just half an hour?
- No miracles, just pure craftsmanship. - spoke proudly of Leorio, who was assisting the Doctor during the operation.
- 'Sick,' said the Doctor to Killua. - I'm happy for you too, but after the operation, you'll need some time to rest. So you'll have to stay here in the hospital for one day.
- Hmm, what do you think? - Killua turned to me.
- It's no big deal. Your health is more important. You lie here for now, and tomorrow we'll go to Biska because of the case she was talking about.
- That's a good arrangement, I like that. I'll lie here tonight and you go about your business. I'll see you tomorrow.
- I'll see you tomorrow.
In the meantime, I'm gonna go for a walk around town and do something. Today was a bit of an unusual day. We met a rather unusual man. Dr Diamond's a bit of a twat, but at least he's an incredible doctor. It must be cool to have someone like that in your acquaintance.
