Chapter 4: A Visionary Misstep
Daichi trudged through the winding streets of Konoha, the midday sun warming the rooftops and casting long shadows across the marketplace. The rhythmic hum of village life was all around him—merchants shouting their deals, children chasing one another, and the distant clang of blacksmiths at work. He was on his way to Maya's tea shop, hoping to enjoy a rare moment of peace after another frustrating morning at the workshop.
He turned a corner near the bathhouses and froze mid-step. There, leaning casually against the village wall, stood a young chunin. His posture seemed nonchalant—hands in his pockets, shoulders relaxed—but his gaze was fixed firmly on the bathhouse wall.
Daichi squinted, unsure of what he was witnessing. Then it hit him: the chunin's milky-white eyes, veins subtly bulging around his temples, were unmistakable. A Hyūga.
"Is he...?" Daichi muttered, his voice trailing off.
The chunin tilted his head slightly, an almost imperceptible smirk tugging at his lips.
"Oh, for heaven's sake." Daichi's face twisted in disgust as realization dawned. "He's using his Byakugan to spy on the women's bathhouse!"
Daichi stormed over, his footsteps loud enough to make the chunin glance his way. The young man's smirk vanished as Daichi jabbed a finger at him.
"Hey, kid! What do you think you're doing?"
The chunin straightened, feigning innocence. "Me? Nothing. Just, uh... keeping an eye on things."
"Keeping an eye on things?" Daichi barked. "You're a chunin! You're supposed to be protecting the village, not peeping into bathhouses!"
The chunin flushed, his bravado faltering. "I was, uh... on patrol. Yeah, patrol! Just making sure no enemies were hiding in the bathhouse. You know, espionage."
"Espionage?" Daichi's voice rose, drawing the attention of nearby villagers. "The only thing you're protecting is your lonely love life!"
By now, a small crowd had gathered. Maya appeared, wiping her hands on an apron as she stepped out of her tea shop. Genji sauntered over from his usual corner, his cane tapping against the cobblestones. Keronu arrived moments later, as cheerful as ever, with an armful of sweets from a nearby stall.
"What's going on here?" Maya asked, her calm voice cutting through the growing commotion.
"Caught this chunin using his Byakugan to peep into the women's bathhouse," Daichi declared, his voice dripping with outrage.
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
"Really? With Byakugan? Now that's just lazy," Genji quipped, his grin widening as he leaned on his cane. "Back in my day, if you wanted to sneak a peek, you had to work for it."
Maya shot him a sharp look. "Genji."
"I'm just saying!" Genji replied, raising his hands defensively.
The chunin, now visibly sweating, tried to step away, but Daichi grabbed his arm. "Oh no, you don't. You're staying right here until someone with actual authority deals with you."
Keronu, munching on a dango, gave the chunin an appraising look. "Can't say I blame him. Those bathhouses have some of the nicest views in Konoha."
"Keronu!" Maya snapped, her face a mix of exasperation and amusement.
"What?" Keronu shrugged. "Just being honest. Besides, the kid's probably just curious. It's practically a rite of passage."
"A rite of passage?" Daichi's voice was incredulous. "This is what passes for shinobi discipline these days?"
The crowd's reactions were varied. Some, like Genji and Keronu, found the situation amusing. Others scolded the young chunin, shaking their heads in disapproval. Maya, ever the voice of reason, stepped forward to diffuse the tension.
"Daichi," she said gently, placing a hand on his shoulder. "He's young. It's not right, but maybe this is an opportunity for him to learn something."
The chunin looked at Maya with wide, hopeful eyes. "Yeah! Learning opportunity! Exactly!"
Daichi glared at him. "You don't get off that easy."
Maya turned to the chunin. "What's your name?"
"H-Hunji," he stammered.
"Well, Hunji," Maya said, her tone firm but kind, "you owe these people an apology. And perhaps a little time reflecting on what it means to wear that forehead protector."
Hunji nodded vigorously. "Yes, ma'am. I'm really sorry. It won't happen again."
Genji chuckled. "See? The kid's got potential. Misguided potential, but potential nonetheless."
Keronu leaned over to Daichi. "Bet you're jealous, huh? Must've been nice seeing through walls."
Daichi's glare could have cut steel. "I'd rather be blind than stoop that low."
The crowd began to disperse, muttering amongst themselves. Some laughed, others shook their heads, but the mood lightened as people returned to their routines.
Daichi sighed, rubbing his temples. "This village..."
Maya patted his shoulder. "It's never boring, is it?"
As Daichi walked away, he glanced back at Hunji, now awkwardly helping Maya sweep outside her tea shop under her watchful eye. He shook his head but couldn't help the faintest twitch of a smile.
"Maybe there's hope for him yet," Daichi muttered. "But only if he keeps his eyes where they belong."
