Chapter 4: New Reunions
Earth, Fire, Air, Water; the four elements that make up the world. Throughout my whole life, I have heard stories of Avatar Aang and how he took down the 100-year tyrannical reign that was the Fire Nation. Now it's been over 40 years since Ozai's rule and now a new threat emerges and a new generation is there to solve the threat. This is a story of how I met Avatar Korra and her friends as well as the adventures we went on.
———
It was the afternoon in Republic City at a building where the city hall representatives known as the United Republic Council met at a U-shaped table.
"There is a madman running around our beloved city, threatening to tear it apart. We need to create a task force, whose sole mission is to find Amon and bring him to justice." One of the representatives said it's a man with dark skin, dark brown hair tied to three ponytails, and wearing Water Tribe clothing.
"Absolutely not! A move that is aggressive would only further divide Benders and Nonbenders," Tenzin objected.
"Tarrlok, I'm inclined to agree with your proposal, but who would even head up such a task force?" A woman who is the Fire Nation councilwoman asked.
"It would be my honor and privilege to accept such a duty," Tarrlok said bowing.
"This is just another one of your ploys to gain more power, isn't it?" Tenzin asked in an accusing manner while lightly pounding at the table.
"All I'm trying to do is help. Think back, forty-two years ago, Republic City was threatened by another dangerous man, Yakone. Your Father wasn't afraid to deal with him head-on," Tarrlok said.
"That has no relevance to the current situation at hand and how DARE you compare yourself to Avatar Aang!" Tenzin yelled.
"Amon is not going to stop with the bending triads. Eventually, he will come for all us benders. Our friends, families. Vote for the task force and I will stop Amon before it's too late. All in favor?" Tarrlok asks raising his hand and the Fire Nation councilwoman also raises her hand and later does the Southern Water Tribe and Earth Kingdom representatives raise their hands and Tarrlok slams a gavel on a platform to close the meeting and he smiles at Tenzin who glares.
———
Mako is walking through a industrialized part of Republic City and he throws one end of his scarf over his shoulder while looking up in the direction of a trolley that's being boarded making him run to the trolley as fast as possible while crossing the street without looking and just then a moped is driving down the street and the rider sees Mako and tries to stop but crashes into Mako making him scream and he falls while the rider wheels the moped over to Mako who picks himself up.
"Oh, no! I'm so sorry. I didn't see you," The rider said.
"How could you NOT see me?! I mean, I was ju-ju…" Mako stops talking as he sees the rider taking off the helmet revealing to be a girl with wavy black hair, green eyes, and wearing red lipstick and he is dumbfounded. "I was… I-I… wow. I was…" Mako stops talking trying to clear his throat and he blushes.
"Are you okay? Did I hurt you? Ugh, I'm such an idiot," The girl said, helping Mako up.
"Don't worry. I'm fine. My brother hits me harder than that every day in practice," Mako said, brushing himself.
"Wait, I recognize you. You're Mako, right? You play for the Fire Ferrets," The girl said.
"Yeah, that's me," Mako said.
"I am SO embarrassed. My name is Asami," The girl named Asami introduced taking her hand out to shake Mako's hand. "Let me make this up to you somehow. How about I treat you to dinner? Tomorrow night, eight o'clock. Kwong's Cuisine." Asami offered to return to her moped.
"Uh, Kwong's? I don't have any clothes nice enough for a place that is classy," Mako said.
"I'll take care of that. All you need to do is show up," Asami said, putting her helmet back on. "So… it's a date?" Asami asked.
"Uh, yeah. I guess so. I'll see you tomorrow night," Mako said and Asami gets back on her moped and drives off taking one more look at Mako before going and Mako stares lovestruck.
———
"So… Tarrlok is putting together a task force? Is this another one of his explotive methods to get more power?" Kang asked as he and his father were in his office in the Air Temple Island.
"You and I both know the answer to that, son," Tenzin said as he huffed in anger, "But do you believe that man had the audacity to compare himself to your Grandfather!" Tenzin said as he currently was taking care of some paperwork and mails.
Kang sighed as he sipped his tea and helped his father with some of those papers, "The man has always been messed up, Dad. You do know he'll try to get Korra's support, right?"
"Knowing him he will try, but hopefully Korra won't be reckless enough to join," Tenzin said with a sliver of hope.
"He'll also try and get me too. I'm known to be the grandson of Avatar Aang and not to mention a certain amount of people know of the Agni Kai Triad incident. She is strong, but she isn't ready for Amon," Kang said.
"I agree with you on that. How has she been?" Tenzin asked with curiosity.
"Well… about that," Kang started off.
[Flashback]
"AHHHH!" Korra shouted from her sleep as she woke up covered in sweat and was panting.
A second later her door was broken down.
"Korra!" Kang shouted as he had his escrima sticks as he was ready to fight. After he saw the coast was clear, he calmed down and walked up to her.
"Are you alright, kid?" he asked with concern, as he approached her.
Korra turned her head away and nodded, "Yeah, just a bad dream is all, hahaha," She said with a hollowed chuckle trying to throw off his concern.
"I can literally smell your lies, you know you can talk to me if there's—" Kang said sincerely.
"Nothing's wrong!" Korra said aggressively, but she turned to face Kang, "Sorry, I-I didn't mean to yell," She said meekly.
"It's about Amon, right?" Kang asked knowingly.
Korra looked at him in shock.
"You know… it's ok to be afraid."
"Wh-Who says I'm afraid?" Korra argued back weakly.
"I didn't say that…" Kang said with a sigh, "Well, I better get going."
[Flashback Ends]
"I see. Give her time; I'm sure she will talk to one of us eventually about it," Tenzin said with a sigh.
"I think it's time we get something to eat," Kang recommended it as he saw the sun setting.
"Agreed, I hope Pema has dinner ready as I am starving," Tenzin said as his stomach growled somewhat.
Kang smiled at his father, "Well we best go feed the monster you call a stomach then," Tenzin started to chuckle at his son's joke as the two walked towards the dining area.
———
Everyone was seated around the table for dinner.
"We are grateful for this delicious food, for happiness, for compassion, and—" Tenzin spoke as he prayed before the meal.
Till a voice interrupted him.
"I'm not interrupting, am I?" spoke an obnoxious voice.
Everyone at the table turned to see councilman Tarrlok.
"This is my home Tarrlok. We're about to eat dinner," Tenzin said with a hinge of anger.
Tarrlok feints ignorance, "Good, because I am absolutely famished," The councilman said.
Tenzin narrowed his eyes on the man.
Tarrlok saw this and smiled, "Airbenders never turn away a hungry guest, am I right?" he asked in a taunting tone.
Tenzin sighed, "I suppose so." He sat down and Pema glared at him with crossed arms. Tenzin just shrugged at his wife.
"Ah, you must be the famous Avatar Korra. It is truly an honor," Tarrlok said with a bow, "I am Councilman Tarrlok, representative from the Northern Water Tribe," he said
Korra stood up and bowed to him, "Nice to meet you," she said, as she sat down.
Tarrlok later looks to Kang, "Hello Captain Beifong, it's always a pleasure to see the son of our most esteemed Police Chief, Lin Beifong."
"He's my son too," Tenzin quietly muttered.
"Councilman, it's good to see you too," Kang said, "and it's no longer Captain."
"Still, you have my respects as the youngest Captain of the United Forces," Tarrlok said.
As Tarrlok sat down on Korra's left side, Ikki got close to him.
"Why do you have three ponytails and how come you smell like a lady? You're weird," she interrogated Tarrlok and made her older brother snort.
Tarrlok looked at the girl, "Well are you… precocious," he said he then turned to Korra, "So, I've been reading about all your adventures in the papers. Infiltrating Amon's rally, now that took some real initiative."
"Oh, thanks. I think you're the first authority figure in the city who's happy I'm here," Korra said.
"Republic City is much better off now that YOU'VE arrived," Tarrlok said.
"Enough with the flattery, Tarrlok. What do you want from Korra?" Tenzin asked in a protective and suspicious tone but Tarrlok put up his hand.
"Patience, Tenzin. I'm getting to that. As you may have heard, I am assembling a task force that will strike at the heart of the revolution and I want you to join me," Tarrlok said to Korra.
"Really?" Korra asked.
"What?!" Tenzin asked, shocked.
"I need someone who will help me attack Amon directly. Someone, who is fearless in the face of danger. That someone is you," Tarrlok said, "Your skill sets can be very valuable too, Captain Beifong. I would love for you to join our Task Force as their leader."
"With all due respect sir, I've just come back home after being involved with violence," Kang said, "joining your Task Force would demean my reasons for coming home."
"Fair enough," Tarrlok said, though in a dejected manner, "What about you, Avatar Korra?"
"Join your task force? I can't," Korra said, shocking both Tenzin and Tarrlok while Korra drinks her drink.
Kang was surprised as well.
"I must admit, I'm rather surprised. I thought you'd jump at the chance to help me lead the charge against Amon," Tarrlok said.
"Me too," Tenzin said.
"I came to Republic City to finish my Avatar training with Tenzin. Right now, I just need to focus on that," Korra said.
"Which is why this opportunity is perfect. You would get on the job experience while performing your Avatar duty for the city," Tarrlok said.
"Korra gave you her answer. It's time for you to go," Tenzin said, annoyed.
"Very well. I'm not giving up on you yet. You'll be hearing from me soon. It has been a pleasure, Avatar Korra," Tarrlok said walking out.
"Bye-bye, Ponytail Man!" Ikki calls for Tarrlok growl at that name and then leaves.
———
Mako arrives at Kwong's Cuisine staring at it in awe and he clutches his scarf and checks his sleeves making him sigh and then walks in.
"Ah, welcome to Kwong's Cuisine, Master Mako," A server said bowing.
"Uh, 'Master'?" Mako asked.
In a back room the server unfolds a shirt from a box and dresses it on Mako and then pulls up pants, ties his shoes, styles his hair, and gives him a formal looking jacket to wear and Mako examines his clothes with pleasure and then Mako takes his red scarf and starts putting it around his neck but the server glances at it and starts to pull it off but Mako grabs the server's wrist to stop him.
"The scarf stays," Mako said.
"As you wish, sir," The server said, bowing. "This way please," The server said, leading Mako back into the restaurant area.
Mako meets with Asami who is sitting at a table and she's dressed in a formal dress.
"Look at you. You look classy," Asami said.
"Thanks to you. Thanks for this," Mako said, sitting down.
"I told you I'd make it up to you. I am such a big pro-bending fan. I caught all your matches this season," Asami said.
"ALL of them? Wow. Honestly, I wish there were a few you hadn't seen," Mako said.
"Oh, don't be ridiculous, you're amazing. I can't wait to see you play in the tournament," Asami said.
"Yeah, well… maybe next year," Mako said, dismayed.
"What do you mean? You made it in," Asami said.
"It just isn't in the cards for us right now," Mako said.
"Tell me. What's the problem?" Asami asked, placing her hand on Mako's and Mako sighed.
"We don't have the cash to ante up for the championship pot. So, it looks like we're out of the running," Mako explained.
"That's not fair," Asami said, dismayed.
Just then the server comes carrying two silver platters.
"Pardon me, Ms. Sato. Your main course," The server said, lifting up the dome lid showing the food.
"Thank you," Asami said.
"Ms. Sato? You wouldn't happen to be related to Hiroshi Sato, creator of the Satomobile, would you?" Mako asked.
"Yeah. He's my Father," Asami said.
"Get out of town!" Mako exclaimed in shock.
"I'm serious. You want to meet him?" Asami asked.
"Meet the most successful captain of industry in all of Republic City? Yeah! I'll take you up on that," Mako said.
"Perfect. I'll tell him tomorrow," Asami said.
———
"Hello, fellow teammate!" Bolin said cheerfully.
"Hey, Bolin," Korra said.
"Missed you at practice this week," Bolin said.
"Yeah, sorry about that," Korra said.
"Nah, that's okay. We're probably gonna be out of the tournament anyway unless some money miraculously drops out of the sky by tomorrow. Anyway, the reason why I came here is to give you this," Bolin said, taking out a cupcake with a rose. "Ta-da!" Bolin said.
"Wow, thanks," Korra said, taking the cupcake. "What's this for?" Korra asked.
"Uh, oh, I can't remember now. Oh, yeah! Now I do! You saved me from Amon!" Bolin said.
"Oh, that? It's no big deal," Korra shrugged.
"No big deal, are you serious? I was totally freaking out when he was coming at me with his creepy mask all 'I will take away your bending forever.' I mean that is... scary stuff. I still can't sleep well," Bolin said.
"Delivery for Avatar Korra," A voice said and it's a council page carrying a large basket of items surrounded by flowers and sets them next to the Avatar. "Tarrlok sends his compliments and urges you to reconsider his offer." The council page said.
"Tell him I haven't changed my mind," Korra said and the council page bows and walks off.
"Who's this Tarrlok guy? Is he bothering you? I could have a word with him," Bolin said, punching his fist with his other fist.
"No, it's not like that. He's just some old guy, who works with Tenzin on the council," Korra said.
"Oh, good. That sounds better. I like that better," Bolin said he later looked around and didn't see the other, and generally cooler Nonbender.
"Where's Kang?" Bolin asked.
"Sleeping," Korra said.
———
Meanwhile at a factory that contains several rows of vehicles known as Satomobiles in an assembly line Asami and Mako are talking to a man known as Hiroshi Sato the father of Asami.
"What do you think of my little operation here?" Hiroshi asked.
"It's very impressive, Mr. Sato," Mako said.
"Please, call me Hiroshi. So, I understand you're dirt poor," Hiroshi said.
"Uh, well…" Mako hesitates.
"Young man, it is nothing to be ashamed of. I, too, come from humble beginnings. Why, when I was your age, I was a mere shoe-shiner and all I had to my name was an idea; the Satomobile. Now, I was fortunate enough to meet someone, who believed in me and my work ethic. He gave me the money I needed to get my idea off the ground and I built the entire Future Industries empire from that one selfless loan," Hiroshi explained.
"Dad, stop bragging. Just tell Mako the good news," Asami said.
"What good news?" Mako asked.
"Well, my daughter passionately told me about your hard earned success in the pro-bending arena and about your team's current financial stumbling block. Now, I'd hate to see you lose your chance at winning the championship just because you're short a few yuans. That's why I'm going to sponsor the Fire Ferrets in the tournament," Hiroshi said.
"Are you serious?!" Mako asked excitedly.
"He's serious. My dad's going to cover your ante for the championship pot," Asami said.
"That IS good news!" Mako said.
"There's just one catch. You all have to wear the Future Industries logo on your uniforms," Hiroshi said.
"I'll tattoo it on my chest if you want, sir," Mako said pointing at his chest and Asami and Hiroshi laughed. "Thank you so much for this. I promise the Fire Ferrets will make the most of this opportunity," Mako said.
"I know you will. And you have a lucky charm on your side," Hiroshi said.
"Lucky charm?" Mako asked.
"The Avatar. Now that she's on your team, you're guaranteed to win," Asami said, "I actually know Avatar Aang's grandson,"
Mako's eyes widened, "You know Kang?!"
"Yeah," Asami said, "he and I went to primary school together."
"And you two dated," Hiroshi added.
"Dad!" Asami started going red, but she soon realized something else, "He's back in Republic City?!"
"Yeah," Mako said, "I have met him a few times in the past week."
"Well how come he didn't say hi to me," Asami said with a pout, "perhaps I should ask Kung Lao."
"Who?" Mako was confused.
"Just another friend of theirs," Hiroshi commented.
…
Kung Lao was coming out of his Economics class at the University and soon saw Asami who did not have a pleased look on her face. This made Kung Lao deduct the reason for why she was here at his college as she started marching over to him. He started to give her a nervous smile as he waved.
"H-Hey Asami," Kung Lao said, "What brings you here—"
"Why didn't you tell me Kang was back?" Asami asked.
"Well ever since the breakup," Kung Lao said, "Kang wasn't ready to see you yet and—"
"I can't even with you," Asami said, "all three of us have been friends for years and you didn't say anything about Kang coming back. Sure we may have broken up, but it was on good terms and we're still friends. I would've at least liked to have known he's back home."
"You're right, I'm sorry," Kung Lao said, "I have to go to my next class, I'll see you later."
As he ran off to get to his class, Asami facepalmed in annoyance and heaved a sigh.
———
At Air Temple Island there is a luxurious Satomobile wrapped in a ribbon and Tenzin walks past it while Ikki and Meelo are playing in it and making car noises.
"Out of the way, Daddy! We're driving!" Ikki said and Tenzin shook his head.
Tenzin sees Kang and smiles.
"I'm assuming you had a good nap," Tenzin said.
Kang nodded with a satisfied smile. Tenzin nodded as he looked back at Ikki and Meelo, "Can you get them off the Satomobile?"
"Will do, Dad," Kang said, he later went to his two siblings and got them out of the Satomobile as Tenzin went to Korra. She was at a round platform with a yin-yang symbol and was practicing Airbending stances.
Korra is circling around the platform while practicing.
"I see Tarrlok's gifts are getting more and more extravagant," Tenzin said joining the Avatar
"Yeah. That guy doesn't know how to take 'no' for an answer," Korra said.
"Why don't you take a break?" Tenzin said, sitting down on the stairs and Korra joined him. "I'm glad you turned down Tarrlok, but I just want to make sure your decision was for the right reason," Tenzin said.
"I'm just really focused on my Airbending training right now, that's all," Korra said.
"Right, that's what you said. You know it's okay to be scared. The whole city is frightened by what's been going on. The important thing is to talk about our fears, because if we don't, they can throw us out of balance," Tenzin said but Korra said nothing.
"I'm always here for you if you want to talk," Tenzin said as he left, disappointed that he didn't get anything out of her.
———
Later Korra is on the railings leaning against the door of the mansion on the island and just the council page from before arrives.
"Avatar Korra, I have something for you," The council page said, making Korra annoyed while jumping down from the railings and unleashes a 180 degrees earth slab, sending the page off and then Korra delivers a kick.
"It doesn't matter how many gifts Tarrlok sends, I am NOT joining his task force!" Korra said while Kang and his sister, Jinora stop their game of Pai Sho to see what's going on.
"It's not a gift, it's an invitation," The council page said.
"To what?" Korra said, taking a piece of paper from the page's hand and reading it.
"Tarrlok is throwing a gala in your honor. All of Republic City's movers and shakers will be there. The councilman humbly requests your attendance," The council page said.
"Gala?"
…
Later at night at the city hall with two huge banners with Korra on them Korra, Kang, Tenzin, Pema, Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo arrive at the city hall dressed in gala clothing and the two younger ones ran off and the other attendants begin clapping their hands as they see Korra and Pema starts wandering and talking with other people while Kang looks at the whole gala with an uneasy expression.
He wore some clothing that was green and continued metal jewelry around his neck. He was wearing some traditional Zaofu clothing that was gifted to him from his Aunt Suyin. He was opting to wear his formal United Forces Captain's attire.
Kang sighed and glared at his father, not wanting to attend this gala in the first place. Tenzin sighed and patted his son's shoulders. "It is respectful that we accept Tarrlok's invitation. Besides, I have a bad feeling about this."
Kang sighed in defeat as Jinora stayed close to her brother. Tenzin noticed this and smiled.
"Kang, please stick with Jinora. Pema and I will handle Korra and the other kids," Kang nodded at his father before walking away and into the crowd of rich and important people. He watched as Tarrlok approached Tenzin and Korra. He narrowed his eyes as Tarrlok led Korra away from Tenzin.
Tenzin is alone and he looks around and then he notices Meelo and he turns blue and gasps.
"No, Meelo! That's not the toilet! Oh, dear…" Tenzin said, walking to Meelo in shame and embarrassment while covering his eyes.
His attention was later brought back to his sister as she tugged on his jacket. He smiled down as she motioned for him to kneel down a bit. "What's wrong, Jinora?"
"Have you been to these kinds of events?"
"I had to attend these. Why do you ask?"
Jinora looked around and shrugged, "It's just a bit… overwhelming."
Kang chuckled and picked up his sister, "It will be fine. I'm right here, kiddo," She smiled at her brother and held onto his neck so she didn't fall off his grasp.
Kang later saw his mother's familiar gray hair in the crowd and his smile fell into a look of dread.
"What's wrong, Kang?" Jinora later looked and saw Kang's mother.
Kang reluctantly walked to his mother with Jinora in his arms. "Hello Mother. I assumed you were dragged here…"
"I was," Lin said, she later observed her son carrying his younger sister. "I see you've been busy taking good care of your brother and sisters."
Before Kang could say anything they heard a voice of a councilman.
"Chief Beifong, Kang!"
Lin approached Tarrlok with Kang following with Jinora in his arms. "I believe you and Avatar Korra have already met.
Kang later noticed his Mother look at Korra in distaste as he knew what this is about, "Just because this city is throwing you this big gala, don't think you're something special. You've done absolutely NOTHING to deserve this," Kang later grabbed his mother's shoulder and glared at her.
"Mom, stop it."
Mako and Bolin from a distance looked at them with wide eyes, but Kang chose to ignore it. Lin rolled her eyes at her son and removed his hand from her shoulder, walking away. He put Jinora down, but she stayed close to him not wanting to leave his side.
Kang looked at Korra with an apologetic look, "I'm sorry about her. She's still a bit—"
"Kang Beifong!"
Kang's eyes widened at the familiar voice he heard and turned around and his eyes widened further. He saw a girl with wavy black hair, green eyes, and wearing red lipstick in a red dress. She was with Mako and was starting to march at him with a glare on her face.
"Oh, h-hey Asami," Kang said nervously, "long-time, no-see."
This was the most vulnerable Korra had ever seen Kang. Even when fighting Triads he was normally a generally brave man. But now, he seemed to be on the verge of panicking.
"Don't you 'Hey Asami' me, you big, massive, colossal jerk," the young woman said, driving her finger into his chest for emphasis.
From Korra and Jinora's perspective, it was almost comical seeing the 6' 3'' Nonbender shrink under the scornful gaze of a beautiful girl that was almost two heads shorter than him.
"You've been back in Republic City for over a week and you didn't say hi to me?" the woman demanded.
"H-Hold on…" Kang said, "let me explain myself—"
"Kang…" Korra interjected. "Who exactly is this girl?" she asked as she looked back and forth between the two of them.
"Oh right," he said, happy for any sort of distraction. "Korra, this is Asami Sato. She and I went to primary school together."
Korra and Asami shook hands as they greeted each other and Asami soon shifted to Jinora. Asami waved at Jinora who waved back shyly, "Hello Jinora, it's good to see you again. It's been too long, I don't know if you remember me," Asami said to Jinora.
"I kind of do," Jinora said meekly, "you're Kang's ex-girlfriend right?"
"Now, we're just friends," Asami said, it seems like her anger for Kang had subsided within that moment.
As Jinora and Asami were together, Kang was looking around for Korra and later saw the media bombard her with questions.
"If you'd be so kind, they just have a couple of questions," Tarrlok said.
"But…" Korra was cut off as Tarrlok pushed her forward.
"Avatar Korra, you witnessed Amon take away people's bending firsthand. How serious a threat does he pose to the innocent citizens of Republic City?" One of the reporters asked.
"I think he presents a real problem," Korra said.
"Then, why have you refused to join Tarrlok's task force? As the Avatar, shouldn't you be going AFTER Amon?" The other reporter asked.
"Well, I…" Korra was cut off.
"Why are you backing away from this fight?" The second reporter asked.
"What? No! I've never backed away from anything in my life!" Korra said.
"You promised to serve this city, aren't you going back on that promise now?" The next reporter asked.
"Do you think pro-bending is more important than fighting the revolution?" The fourth reporter asked.
"How do you think Avatar Aang would have handled this?" The fifth reporter asks and Korra is confused, annoyed, and intimidated by the bombardment of questions.
"Are you afraid of Amon?" The second reporter asked.
"I'm NOT afraid of anybody!" Korra yelled. "If the city needs me, then… I'll join Tarrlok's task force and help fight Amon!" Korra said.
"What?" Kang asked, shocked.
"There's your headline, folks," Tarrlok said and cameras start flashing while Tenzin hangs his head in disappointment while Mako and Bolin look at each other confused along with the other guests while Asami smiles at this while Kang is baffled.
———
Kang reads the newspaper, "'Councilman Tarrok's elite task force successfully captured chi-blockers training underground a bookstore. Thanks to Tarrlok's task force and the Avatar at their side, the city is slowly becoming a much safer place. The Avatar and Councilman Tarrlok have agreed to make a press conference later today this evening at five o'clock.'" Kang read aloud. "This does not sound like a good thing," Kang said and he sees Korra walking for her room and he follows her until he arrives at the Avatar's closed door. "Korra, are you okay?" Kang knocked on the door.
"Not now, Kang," Korra said through the closed door.
"Look, you can't keep doing this to yourself. You have to leave the Task Force," Kang said.
"Just leave me alone!" Korra snapped through the door and Kang sighs while walking away.
…
Mako and Asami are at the park and are going for a carriage ride.
"I know it sounds weird to say this, but I'm glad I hit you with my moped," Asami said.
"Uh, me too," Mako said, chuckling.
"I forgot to ask, why didn't you accept the new silk scarf I bought for you last week? You didn't like it?" Asami asked.
"No, it was really nice, but this scarf was my father's and it's all I have left of him. I just feel like it keeps me safe," Mako said.
"I'm so sorry. I lost my Mother when I was very young," Asami said and they stared warmly and she cuddled into Mako's side putting her hand on his chest. "I feel so safe with you," Asami said while the trolley rode off into the park with two other couples.
…
Tenzin flies with his glider and lands on the dock where Korra, Tarrlok, and several others are.
"Korra, this is madness," Tenzin said to the girl.
"Don't try to stop me and don't follow me," She said in sadness, "I have to face Amon alone."
Tenzin rounded on Tarrlok, "This is all your fault!"
"I tried to talk her out of it, but she's made up her mind," Tarrlok said.
Korra used her waterbending to propel her boat to the island.
———
At Aang Memorial Island, Korra stood and waited for Amon to show up, but he didn't.
She jumped down and started to walk back to the docks when a rope grabbed her legs and pulled her into a dark corridor.
She quickly freed herself as she spun around and let loose a fire ring and saw that she was surrounded by chi blockers with the flash of light from the fire.
She valiantly tried to fight them off but they blocked her chi and prevented her from bending and knocked her out.
…
She woke up a few seconds later and found herself being held by Kang as she saw that they were at the dock, waiting for a boat.
"Kang, You came?" she asked in surprise.
"Who else would?" Kang asked.
Korra just started to break down and cried in his arms.
"I was so terrified. I felt so helpless," She said in hiccups.
"Tenzin was right though, since that night at the rally, I've been scared. I've never felt like this before. I don't know what to do?" She said to him in a sob.
"Admitting it is the first and hardest thing to do," He said to Korra.
Tenzin joined them a second later. He soon looked back to see the grounds stained with blood and bruised bodies of some Equalist Members. Tenzin knew that Kang was involved in this, but didn't want to question it as he was glad that Korra was safe.
He and his son had a wordless conversation and they continued to let Korra cry it out in his arms as the task force entered in and arrested the downed chi blockers that Kang took care of while Korra was unconscious.

A/N: This is a rewrite of the story and this will take longer to write! I also want to let people know that this story is inspired by Ominious442's story, a Test of Metal as it has an interesting what-if scenario; that being while Lin and Tenzin were together, what if they had a son. I took some liberties as instead of Kang being an Earthbender, he couldn't bend any element at all. But to make up for it, Kang is not only a master martial artist and acrobat, he also has a sense that assassins do which is called Eagle Sense in the Assassin's Creed fandom, but in LOK, it's a sixth sense that only Kang has. Here is the character and his VA:
Kang Beifong - (CV: Crispin Freeman - Sounds like Roy Harper from Young Justice and Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)
