Chapter 10: Fractured Loyalties
Scene One: Cracks in the Team
Liu Cheng sat silently in the team's training room. The atmosphere was tense, heavy with unspoken words. Zhang Wei, the captain, stood leaning against the wall, arms crossed, while the other team members watched the scene unfold in silence.
"Tell me, Liu Cheng," Zhang Wei began, his voice as cold as the Swiss air outside. "What exactly are you trying to accomplish with all your investigations? Because from where I stand, all you're doing is disrupting our focus."
Liu Cheng lifted his gaze from his laptop, struggling to remain calm. "I'm trying to protect our team. There are things happening behind the scenes that could cost us the tournament if we don't figure them out."
"And all of this without consulting me," Zhang Wei shot back, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "As if you're the one leading this team."
"This isn't about authority, Zhang Wei," Liu Cheng retorted, standing up. "This is about safety. If you can't see that, then you're the one holding us back."
Yao Feng, the team's striker, interjected softly. "Can't we resolve this without fighting? We have a match in two days. We need to be a team, not... whatever this is."
"A team?" Zhang Wei laughed bitterly. "How can we be a team when some of us are working behind everyone's back?"
Lin Mei stepped in, standing beside Liu Cheng. "He hasn't done anything behind your back. We're trying to uncover the truth about sabotage that could eliminate us. If you can't see that, then you're blind."
Zhang Wei looked at Lin Mei in disbelief before turning and storming out of the room without another word. The silence left behind was deafening.

Scene Two: Phantom's New Warning
Later that evening, Liu Cheng and Lin Mei were in their makeshift workspace in their hotel room. The glow of their laptop screens illuminated their worried faces as they reviewed decrypted data from Phantom.
"This is getting stranger," Lin Mei said, her fingers dancing across the keyboard. "Look at this. The anomalies aren't just in our matches. They're in other key duels too."
Liu Cheng studied the data, his brow furrowed. "The sabotage isn't random. It seems like someone is targeting weaker teams to clear the path for the favorites. This is well-orchestrated."
As they spoke, a new email from Phantom arrived. This time, the message was more ominous:
"The game is dangerous, and you've crossed the line. Stop now, or face the consequences."
Lin Mei read the message aloud. "Sounds like a threat. Do you think they'll actually come after us?"
"If they're going to such lengths to silence us, they're definitely hiding something," Liu Cheng replied. "But we won't stop."
---
Scene Three: A Test of Loyalty
The next day, the atmosphere in the training hall was even more tense. Zhang Wei had called for a team meeting to address the conflicts. Liu Cheng knew this wouldn't just be a discussion, but a test of loyalty for everyone.
Zhang Wei stood in front of the team, his hands in his pockets, his gaze fixed on Liu Cheng.
"Before we start, I want everyone to share their thoughts on this situation," he began, his voice calm but commanding. "Lin Mei and Liu Cheng clearly believe there's sabotage. What do the rest of you think?"
Chen Rui, a veteran and one of the team's most experienced players, spoke first. "I think there's a chance they're right. Some of the glitches we've seen don't look accidental."
"But we're risking our focus," Yao Feng interjected. "If we get too caught up in this, we lose sight of what matters most—our matches."
Liu Cheng couldn't stay silent any longer. "Our matches are already at risk! If we don't figure this out, there might not be a next round for us."
Zhang Wei raised a hand, cutting him off. "Enough. This is a team decision. If the majority thinks we should stop, then we'll stop."
The team voted. Lin Mei, Chen Rui, and Liu Cheng voted to continue the investigation, while Zhang Wei, Yao Feng, and two others voted against it. The result was a tie.
"As captain, I make the final decision," Zhang Wei declared. "And I say we focus on the tournament."
Liu Cheng's fists clenched. "Fine. But when this happens again—when we lose because of something beyond our control—remember this."
---
Scene Four: An Unexpected Trap
That night, Liu Cheng and Lin Mei ignored the team's decision. They accessed the tournament system using the data they had, carefully navigating its security measures.
As they worked, Lin Mei froze. "Wait. This isn't right. The system... something's changed."
A red message flashed across the screen:
"You've been caught."
In that moment, their laptops shut down, and the lights in the room flickered. Liu Cheng stood abruptly, a chill running down his spine.
"Do you think they've found us?" he asked, trying to stay calm.
"Definitely," Lin Mei replied, grabbing her bag. "We need to get out. Now."
As they fled, tournament security was already on their floor. Using emergency exits, Liu Cheng and Lin Mei barely escaped, carrying only a USB drive with critical data.
---
Scene Five: A Clash in the Dark
Safe in an old cabin at the base of the Swiss mountains, Liu Cheng and Lin Mei sat with only the USB drive between them. The cold air bit at their skin, but adrenaline kept them from feeling it.
"What now?" Lin Mei asked, looking at the drive in her hand. "We have evidence, but how do we use it?"
Liu Cheng thought aloud. "Phantom keeps warning us, but they're also giving us clues. Maybe they want us to uncover the truth, but they're testing us along the way."
Lin Mei laughed nervously. "Or they just enjoy the game. Whoever they are, they're dangerous."
At that moment, Liu Cheng's phone rang. It was Zhang Wei.
"Where are you?" Zhang Wei's voice was angry. "And what have you been doing? Security is looking for you two all over the hotel!"
"We're doing what you refused to," Liu Cheng replied. "This isn't just about the tournament, Zhang Wei. This is about something much bigger."
"I don't care what you think," Zhang Wei shot back coldly. "If you jeopardize our team again, you're out. This is your last warning."
---
Final Scene: Liu Cheng's Resolve
After the call, Liu Cheng felt the weight of his situation. He stood outside the cabin, staring into the distance. Snow blanketed the mountains, and the moon shone brightly in the dark sky.
"This has gone beyond the game," he said quietly. "But I can't stop now. I won't stop until I uncover the truth."
Lin Mei stepped outside, standing beside him. "I knew you were stubborn, but this... This is something else."
Liu Cheng gave a faint smile. "Maybe I'm crazy. But if we don't fix this, no one will."
The cabin remained silent, but their determination burned brighter than ever.
