Chapter 20: Crimson Reckoning — Act 01
Elliott, who had been unusually quiet, finally broke the tension with a chilling observation. "Guys... Did you hear that? That echo behind the monster's roar... It sounded... like Yumiko's voice. But twisted. Wrong."
The group fell silent, processing the chilling detail Elliott had pointed out. None of them had caught it until now, but now that he had, the weight of his words settled over them like a dark cloud.
Nathaniel, his hand instinctively reaching for his pistol, exhaled slowly. "Sharp ears, Elliott. That wasn't just an echo... It was something else. Something alive. The mist around the crevice—it's not just a storm. It's consumed her. Turned her into something we can't even begin to understand."
Kyora's face drained of color, his voice cracking with disbelief. "You're saying that... that thing down there... is Yumiko?"
Tarot stuffed an entire peach into his mouth in his usual clumsy manner, nearly choking on it from the shock. "Holy peaches! Yumiko's turned into a monster!" he shouted, only to be swiftly smacked upside the head by Kyora.
"Hold up for a second," Joker interrupted, his voice laced with confusion. "Even if the mist did consume Yumiko, how did it transform her into that thing? She's supposed to be some kind of guardian for the factory. And what happens if we go down there and get caught by the mist ourselves?"
Nathaniel kept his focus, his gaze fixed on the ravine ahead. He remained calm, covering his mouth and nose with bandana, his voice steady as ever. "We're about to find out." Without another word, he took a running leap and slid down the edge, disappearing into the crevice. His long coat billowed in the wind as he descended swiftly, his landing unspoken but inevitable.
Nathaniel fell through the cold air, the wind rushing past him as he plummeted into the crevice. His jacket flared out behind him, adding to the dizzying speed of the descent. His eyes stayed locked on the jagged rocks below, calculating the best point to land.
With a controlled movement, he reached out, gripping a protruding piece of ice that jutted from the wall of the ravine. The sudden halt jolted his body, but he quickly pushed off, twisting in mid-air. His feet hit the ground hard, the impact sending a shock through his legs. He staggered but managed to stay upright, using his momentum to roll and avoid further injury.
Nathaniel's boots crunched into the snow as he stood, taking a moment to survey the eerie scene before him. The air was thick with a strange stillness, but a twisted energy lingered in the atmosphere. And there—just ahead, barely visible in the dim light—was the monstrous form of Yumiko, now a grotesque shell of what she once was. The blade she wielded seemed to pulse with malevolent power, its crimson aura reflecting the change in her.
He approached cautiously, scanning his surroundings for any sign of danger, but the atmosphere felt... unnatural. His focus remained locked on Yumiko, whose new form had become something beyond human comprehension. Every step Nathaniel took, the weight of the situation pressed down on him.
"Yumiko..." he muttered, barely above a whisper, feeling the intense pull of the strange energy that surrounded her. It felt like something was feeding off her presence, drawing power from her very being.
His hand hovered near the pistol at his side, but the thought of using force on Yumiko—his teammate—was a hard pill to swallow. Instead, he edged closer, searching for any sign of her past self beneath the monstrous shell.
The monstrous Yumiko stood frozen, her form like a hollow vessel. All Nathaniel could hear was the heavy, ragged breathing that echoed through the space, mingled with the howling wind that cut through the air.
He took a moment to survey the surroundings, noticing how the mist swirled ominously around them. Quickly, he donned his mask, feeling the immediate relief of clarity as it shielded him from the cursed air. "As I thought," he muttered under his breath. "Breathing in the mist... it's the source of the curse. She inhaled it, driving her to hallucinate and spiral into madness."
Nathaniel's gaze shifted upwards toward his team, gesturing sharply with his hand for them to move away from the mist. His warning was subtle, but clear.
Though most of the group didn't immediately grasp the danger, Joker's enhanced mechanical mind quickly processed Nathaniel's intent. "He wants us to move to safer ground," Joker explained, his voice steady and analytical.
The others exchanged wary glances, then nodded in agreement. They understood the importance of avoiding the mist's toxic influence. Reluctantly, they began to back away, their concern growing as they watched Nathaniel prepare to face the monstrous form of Yumiko alone.
Nathaniel, his pistol gripped firmly beside his face, kept his eyes locked on Yumiko, never flinching. "Let's not drag this out too long," he said, his voice steady but tinged with a warning. "I'll keep it quick, but you and I both know you're a tough one. The thing is, half of you is under the control of something monstrous right now. We don't want this to spiral out of control and end up in a situation where one of us doesn't make it out alive."
He didn't take his gaze off her, understanding full well that Yumiko's strength wasn't something to take lightly. But he also knew that with her mind no longer fully her own, her power was fractured. This wasn't the Yumiko they knew, and that made her more dangerous, but also more vulnerable.
Nathaniel sighed, taking a slow, measured breath as he prepared himself for the inevitable. "This probably won't be easy," he muttered, his fingers tightening on the grip of his pistol. He knew that the next few moments could decide everything.
The monster's senses surged to life, her body pulsing with dark energy. The air grew heavy, and with a guttural growl, she began to stalk forward. Her sword scraped across the ice with an unsettling screech, each movement deliberate, calculated. The sound echoed ominously in the stillness of the ravine, sending shivers through the air. As she closed the distance, the ice beneath her seemed to tremble, cracking and splintering under the weight of her monstrous presence.
In an instant, she twisted, a fluid motion as her body coiled like a predator preparing to strike. The ground beneath her feet shattered as she pushed off with explosive force, her feet digging into the ice as she propelled herself forward in a vicious dash. Her silhouette blurred against the mist as she became a streak of black, her crimson greatsword trailing behind her like the harbinger of death. The earth cracked and split with the force of her assault, sending chunks of ice tumbling into the void below.
Before Nathaniel could even react, she leaped into the air with terrifying grace, her blade raised high above her head. The crimson light from her energy-saturated weapon cut through the mist like a burning star, casting an eerie glow across the ice. She descended like a hammer, the weight of her blade and her own momentum building to a crushing, final blow aimed squarely at Nathaniel's chest.
But Nathaniel was no amateur. His body was already in motion, his instincts honed over countless battles. He surged to the side, his movements swift and fluid, a blur of motion. As her blade plummeted toward him with the force of a falling mountain, Nathaniel dropped into a low crouch, pushing off the ice with every ounce of strength. The blade's arc missed him by inches, its deadly edge crashing into the ice with such ferocity that the ground shuddered beneath him. The impact sent shockwaves through the fog, lifting the cold mist in violent spirals as if the very air had been sliced apart.
Nathaniel landed smoothly on his feet, his eyes narrowing as he quickly assessed his surroundings. The fog was thick, swirling with the blood-red energy that radiated from the monster's form. His focus never wavered. He slid into a perfect stance, the barrel of his pistol steady and unwavering as he took aim at the now-hovering, terrifying figure. With a practiced flick of his finger, he fired.
The bullet rocketed forward, its trajectory straight and true. It sliced through the fog, the crimson mist parting slightly as it sped toward the creature.
The shot was a blur of speed and precision, the bullet's path cutting through the haze like a streak of light. But as it neared its target, something strange happened. The crimson energy that surrounded the monster seemed to pulse, rippling out like a barrier, swallowing the bullet whole.
The shot collided with the energy, and for a moment, everything froze. A flash of light. A crackling pulse of dark energy. The bullet, once piercing and certain, was consumed by the red glow as if it had never existed, leaving only a faint, smoldering trace in the air.
Before Nathaniel could process the failure, the monster's blade slashed down again, carving through the air with deadly speed. Her form moved like a blur, the ice cracking and splintering beneath her as she propelled herself forward with a wild, frenzied charge. She was faster now, driven by a primal force, and the blade was already on its way to sever his head.
Nathaniel's eyes widened, calculating the angle. He barely had time to react before the blade was upon him. He slid backward, his feet skidding against the ice, just narrowly avoiding the swing.
The blade hissed past him, the sheer force of it sending a gust of cold wind in its wswing
Nathaniel could feel the air shift as the sword sliced through the space where his neck had been mere moments before. His heart raced, adrenaline pumping through his veins as he readied himself for the next move.
The monster was relentless—her speed, her power, was unlike anything he'd faced before. And with every passing moment, the gap between them closed.
