Chapter 20: Fear
Char crawled on the ground and quickly started jumping from one grass blade to another, keeping her eight eyes peeled for lizards, those are going to be her dinner. She could remember their kind as clear as day, when she was still inside that dusty fortress she used to hide from them all the time.
Massive creatures, fast, and powerful, she had seen them eat many of her sisters, and what was most terrifying about them was their blindingly fast tongue. All she knows is that she must get her revenge, eating one should be enough to clear her mind.
She stopped, seeing a lizard on the side of a tree. Her legs started shaking, and her fangs tingled. She wanted to approach, but her body refused to move. Fear, the trauma, the horror, the monsters she feared the most, one of them is now in front of her eyes. Not even her massive sister would dare approach such a deadly foe.
I'm stronger now, I can win, and I've got a titan behind me, his power, might, and strength, are coursing through my limbs. She gulped, slowly approaching. The lizard spotted her and glared in her direction, and Char froze in place, instinctively trying to hide.
The lizard jumped down from the tree and landed on a grass blade, crushing it down. It was several times bigger than Char, heavier, and its scales created an impenetrable armor. Even if a hundred spiders were to swarm it, their fangs would even leave a single dent.
Thud! Thud! The lizard approached Char with confident steps, she had seen a free meal and wouldn't miss it. Finding food inside this predator-filled forest was surprisingly hard.
Char glared at the monster straight into the eyes, holding her breath and awaiting her chance to attack. She saw it blink and charged forward as fast as she could…but she tripped, her legs still weighing her from the fear and hesitation.
The moment Char tripped, the lizard unleashed her tongue, catching her in the blink of an eye. Char looked down, giving up as her body was yanked into the lizard's massive mouth. This is the end, it was a foolish decision to attempt to attack the monster that terrified her through her whole life.
She awaited her death as the lizard tried chewing, but death never came, it didn't even call or knock on the door. Char instead felt good, her lower back did hurt a bit from using Shin's power and the lizard's gentle bites were making her feel extremely relaxed.
"Hey, aren't you trying to eat me?" Char asked, genuinely confused.
The lizard looked down at her, she would've started sweating if she could. She was chewing as hard as she could, and the spider felt like a stone in her mouth. Too hard to eat, and strangely, her limbs could easily push the lizard's jaw down when wiggling.
The lizard realized the spider wasn't food and tried spitting her out, she was too dangerous to swallow whole. But Char clenched her fangs on the lizard's tongue and refused to let go. That wasn't even an attack, she was instinctively resisting being swallowed.
The lizard wanted to spit Char out, but Char was afraid of being swallowed, holding for dear life to the lizard's tongue, complicating the situation even further.
^Char, what's going on? Do you feel kinda off?^ Shin's voice boomed inside her head.
^Sorry master…I'm about to die…a lizard caught me, and I'm being eaten to death, my life is flashing before my eyes…I wish I had finished that fly I caught…^ She sounded sad, depressed, and terrified.
^Lizard? Is that an alligator or something? If it's anything smaller than punch it out, rip your way through its skull, you have my strength.^ Shin was confused, she should've been able to deal with any bug or small animal with his power, even a cat or a dog wouldn't be able to best her easily now that she has the strength of a human.
^But I'm getting eaten…I can't move…^ She replied…
^You little bug! A lizard would've already munched and swallowed you! Get moving!^ His voice roared inside her head, ^Look around, do you think that lizard has enough strength to beat me? Move, rip her tongue out, and feed it to the ants.^
Char tried, and her tiny limbs pushed the lizard's jaw down, she was indeed too powerful to be eaten. Yet the fear still held strong, she clenched her fangs and jumped out with her full strength, ripping the lizard's tongue out.
Char rolled on the dirt, finally hitting a flower and stopping. The lizard was standing in her place, bleeding from her mouth. She had gotten injured by a bug smaller than her. Half of her mind screamed to run, and the other screamed to fight.
Pride took over the lizard's brain, she would never run away from a fight with an enemy smaller than her. She stood her ground, hissing at the spider.
Char shrunk in fear, her eyes looking at the angry lizard in terror. Even though she knew she could win, her body refused to move as she wanted. Courage alone wasn't enough to overcome the horror etched into her body.
The lizard saw Char, felt her fear, and felt comfortable. It was just luck, the spider couldn't have been that strong. One step after another, she approached Char with caution.
^Attack!...Damn it, where are you? Look around, I'll come and kick that thing away.^ Shin stood and asked Ase to watch his meat while he was out. Sadly Char wasn't helpful, her eyes fixed on the lizard so Shin couldn't tell at which part of the forest she was.
He kept screaming inside her head, asking her to look around for any landmark or noticeable tree, but she wasn't able to comply.
Shin rushed through the forest, slithering between the large trees, looking for a fight between a spider and a lizard, something far too small to find with ease.
