Chapter 146: Volume 4 Chapter 26: Turn out, I Have a Wife
(Walson)
The sun was setting outside the city walls.
On the twenty-fifth day after leaving the royal capital, our group finally arrived at the second destination. We were now at [Terraforge City . Vanos] in the west border of the Teigitan Kingdom, situated at the Duke Falmarno's Range, adjacent to Mahamatra and Braatio.
Apart from us, there were many carriages waiting to pass through the city walls, and numerous pedestrians and carriages were leaving the city from the opposite direction.
Well... I really didn't want to come near this cursed place if it weren't for Melon's sake.
"Hmph! Damn arrogant humans! Always acting so annoyingly self-righteous, why should I tell you anything just because you asked!?" Right in front of my wolf-drawn carriage, a guy was incessantly berating me.
"Oh, no, I just..." I tried to explain, but he cut me off.
"You think having a wolf pull your cart makes you special? You're just a replaceable cart driver, aren't you?"
"..."
"What's with that look? You humans are always acting so high and mighty, in my eyes, you're just worthless!"
The man who is berating me is tall, with a skinny body, golden hair, and pointed long ears – one of the defining traits of an elf.
Things turned out this way because I noticed many people coming out of the city gate were elves, and I was curious, so I casually struck up a conversation with one of them... only to be insulted like this.
...And that's precisely why I didn't want to come here. If it weren't for the Palm Jungle being impassable with a wolf-drawn carriage, forcing us to travel lightly on foot, I wouldn't have wanted to stay here at all.
I've heard rumors that this city has a severe racial conflict, and illegal slave trading is said to be prevalent here too. It's no wonder; Vanos was the last territory recovered in Teigitan's history, having been ruled by the Bishop branch for two hundred years. Therefore, the discrimination against non-human races is most severe in the eastern countries.
But let's get back to this elf guy in front of me.
"What?! What's going on? What's happening?" The commotion continued until Barella of alcohol came to my rescue, finally bringing a change in the situation.
Barella, with a cheerful smile, sat beside me, watching the elf youth in front of us.
"Huh... Oh? An elf... together with a human?"
"Yes, indeed. I am Ovilia of the House of Geogu, and we are from Teigitan." Barella put on a signboard-like smile that said, "Dog House Operation Mode."
Tsk... This angelic smile of hers is too deceiving! If I didn't know her true nature, I'd fall in love with her for sure... Wait, didn't she just call herself the wrong name?
"Ah... I see... So you are from another land... I apologize for causing you trouble, Miss Ovilia." The elf youth hesitated for a few seconds and then put on a friendlier expression, bowing to Barella.
"I am Alorda Ylf, pleased to meet you, Miss Ovilia."
He's quite good-looking... No, no, no! That's not it, right? Wasn't he just acting completely different earlier? Is this some kind of sorcery?
And why are all elves that I know of so condescending to others? Do they all have to have such a terrible attitude?
"Anyway, Miss Ovilia, I think you should leave this place quickly. If not for the war situation, I wouldn't want to leave this place where money is lying all around." The elf youth said.
Oh, right, I've heard that Vanos is rich in iron ore and mithril, which is probably what he means by "money lying all around.", considering how expensive those materials are.
As I quietly listened to their conversation, I thought about it.
"Leave?"
"Yes, there's news that the western countries are gathering soldiers, and it feels like Braatio's assistance might come at any time. I'd rather hurry back to my family's home in Yspann for safety."
"Yspann... So the elves here are all returning to Braatio?" Barella continued gathering information.
"Yeah, not just me, many elves in the residential area of this city are starting to move out. Most of them are heading back to Braatio. Does this help, Miss Ovilia?"
"That helps, thank you, Mr. Alorda." Barella thanked him with a smile.
"Then I'll take my leave..."
"Wait, there's one more thing."
"What is it?"
"I want you to apologize to Walson." Just when I thought the conversation was about to end, Barella's tone suddenly changed.
It turned cold and sharp.
"Apologize to a human, a damn human!?" The elf youth's face twisted in an instant.
"Yes, well... I don't usually do this outside... Allow me to reintroduce myself. I am Charlize Ovilia Yspann, ah, that's right, the most influential Yspann family from your homeland." Barella's face maintained that smile, but I found it scary.
...If I gave her a folding fan and a gorgeous dress right now, she'd be the perfect villainess in an otome game!
"And the person you insulted just now is a dear friend of mine." Barella spoke with a cold tone while rubbing her cheek against mine.
Oi Barella! What are you doing!? Something bouncy and soft just touched my arm…..
Uuuuu it felt so good…. No! Don't fall for the temptation, Walson! Remember how she usually behaves!
"Right now, you are safe in the 'present,' but I don't know what will occur in you in the 'future'... Hence, I advise you to apologize properly, Mr. Alorda." Barella spoke in a cold tone while rubbing her cheek against mine.
"I-I'm sorry! I know I was wrong! Spare me, spare me!" The elven youth was frightened by the barrel's words and quickly apologized before running away.
...After a while, I turned my head to the elven girl beside me, intending to ask what just happened, but the wine loving elf didn't give me the chance to do so.
"Don't think too much about it, it's just a small favor." I saw her suddenly retreat into the car, covering her face with both hands, leaving me alone in a daze on the driver's seat.
What was that all about...?
...Was she standing up for me because of our friendship?
"You two, stop daydreaming around, please show some form of identification or an item." The fierce-looking gatekeeper brought me back to reality.
"Oh, yes, sure." I had learned from the last time when I was invited for tea, so this time, I took out the golden knife Derisha gave me from my inventory.
"..." The gatekeeper's expression turned extremely terrified when he saw the knife.
"This knife, Could it be... you are the princess's husband!!!!!"
