Chapter 20: Professor Kabaneru’s Makeover Plan

Heading out to the town, our first stop was a café. Unbelievably, it seemed Professor Kabaneru came out without having breakfast. Even teachers living in official residences should have access to the school cafeteria. Underestimating the importance of maintaining one’s health as a salaryman, perhaps?

“Well, having breakfast at a café like this feels like a date, doesn’t it?”

Although Professor Kabaneru laughed casually, I had no such intentions. I sipped my coffee while casually observing the relaxed professor enjoying his omelette. There’s a certain detachment or aristocratic air about places like this; he truly is from a noble background.

Today is Professor Kabaneru’s makeover plan. First stop: the beauty salon. While I used to go to the barber until the previous loop, students who want to appear more attractive all go to a beauty salon. On October 1st, the day the loop started, which was a half-day due to the afternoon entrance ceremony, I visited the salon to tidy up my hair. Three weeks have passed since then, and this time, I made reservations for both me and the professor.

The nobility and wealthy merchants often tend to be good-looking. Perhaps they continuously marry beautiful princesses, incorporating good-looking DNA. After Professor Kabaneru had his usual messy hair and eyebrows tidied, and his slightly neglected beard cleanly shaved, he transformed into a refined young nobleman. No, this might be his true appearance. I can’t help but think he’s been missing out on a lot in life.

Once the beauty salon session was over, we headed to the tailor. Despite Professor claiming, “The clothes I have are sufficient,” I wondered who prepared that dad-like coordination he was lounging around in front of the TV on Sundays. I called a fitter and requested styling. I got a business casual set, two casual sets, and decent shoes. The total cost amounted to about two months’ worth of Professor’s salary, but diving into a dungeon would quickly recover such expenses.

Next, changing into the freshly acquired shoes and a neatly simple outfit, we went to the magical tool shop. His equipment dates back ten years from his school days and is terribly unfashionable, especially the wand. Here, he switched to a black sandalwood baton-shaped wand. It looked quite fancy and suited the fantasy atmosphere of a certain magical academy. I also got my hands on an iron-wooden sword.

After lunch, it was the usual armor shop. I had the shopkeeper help Professor pick out a new robe. There happened to be a top-notch blade-resistant enchantment in stock, so it was an immediate decision. This also cost about two months’ worth of salary, but I arranged for it to be on installments, with the down payment covered in advance.

“Alexi, what exactly do you want to do with me…”

After being dragged around shopping all day, Professor Kabaneru was exhausted. While listening to his complaints at the café, I sipped my tea. Since he likes sweet things, every time he reluctantly took a bite of the pancake, his mood visibly improved. Overall, he didn’t seem dissatisfied with today’s shopping spree. Just a while ago at the armor shop, he confidently put on a robe, wielded his wand, and struck a pose. In the end, men are weak to things like transformation belts, beam sabers, and new weapon toys.

And naturally, he has good raw material to work with. Even in this chilly setting of two guys in a café, Professor Kabaneru received occasional friendly glances from female customers. I had planned to propose studying incantations at the café at the end of the day, but it seems that was unexpected. We’ll discuss the details tomorrow after school.

The next day, in the staff room and among the students, Professor Kabaneru became a minor topic of conversation. The symbol of scruffiness, he suddenly transformed into a handsome guy. After school, he seemed quite perplexed. He received meal invitations from all over, regardless of gender.

“Professor, it’s because the original material is good.”

I comforted him, but I understand the confusion of being suddenly bombarded with meal invitations just by changing one’s appearance a bit. In a quiet corner of the research lab, we quietly immersed ourselves in observing crops.
