Chapter 32: Hard Worker
Sunday, April 28. 13:00.
Gregor woke up early to have breakfast at the hotel's restaurant. Afterward, he returned to his room and changed into his clown costume; he applied the same makeup as last time.
Once again, he wandered through the small town, entertaining the audience that came to him, mostly children and elderly people, who were amazed by his magic tricks and silly dances.
Every time he saw a new person, he clenched one fist twice, activating his Eyes and seeing their vision.
As he expected from his previous attempts, they were just another point of view of Eleanor's vision.
As his audience went about their day, Gregor finally had the opportunity to visit places he had neglected during his previous walks.
He went to the tree where the first victim's body was found; he looked for any clues or evidence the killer might have left, using his forensic knowledge.
He couldn't find anything unusual; the killer was experienced enough to leave no evidence, or perhaps Gregor's forensic knowledge wasn't sufficient to discover hidden evidence. After all, everything he knew was from television shows and other fictional media from his original world.
Since he was nearby, he went to another part of town that he had neglected, the southern part.
There wasn't much there yet, mostly construction sites.
Gregor took advantage of this; he clenched his fist twice, activating his Eye, and began to closely watch the construction workers' visions.
As expected, every vision showed another point of view of Eleanor's vision.
Gregor looked at the last worker's vision, expecting to see the grotesque transformations, the blood-red moon, and the unknown killer laughing in the main square, but surprisingly, the man's vision was different.
The man was standing still, as if frozen, looking at the floor, where a pregnant woman lay in a puddle of blood. The woman's left arm missing, her face showed agony and pain; her last moments were full of despair and fear.
Gregor stood still, his face slowly contorting into an enraged expression. Even though he had never met the woman or the man in the vision, he guessed who they were.
Eleanor's pregnant sister, Laura Rigby, and her husband, Wilson Tanner.
At that moment, something snapped in Gregor's mind. He decided he would prevent Laura's death, even if it killed him.
Even though it was none of Gregor's business, the thought of allowing Laura's death without doing anything was something he couldn't stand.
Without speaking to anyone, Gregor returned to the hotel.
As he was about to enter his room, Eleanor approached him with her usual smile.
"Gregor! You won't believe it! I finally convinced my sister to postpone her wedding until after the baby is born!" Eleanor looked extremely happy and proud of herself.
Hearing her, Gregor felt even more pressured to prevent the vision he had seen from becoming reality.
He had thought to tell Eleanor but decided against it, because even if she believed him, knowing what was going to happen could put her in danger.
Gregor forced a smile, "T-that's good, Eleanor..." He couldn't help but stutter.
"Are you alright, Gregor?" she asked after noticing that he wasn't acting as usual.
"I'm just a little tired; this costume is really hot..." Gregor replied.
"Oh, please rest for a while then," Eleanor said.
"I will, don't worry."
Eleanor let Gregor go to his room and went back to the reception.
Gregor quickly closed his room door.
Both his mind and spirituality were at a critical point. He quickly took off his clown costume and makeup, and without even putting on other clothes, he tucked himself into bed wearing only his underwear.
....
Monday, April 29. 01:00
Gregor suddenly woke up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat.
He felt as if an anvil had fallen on his head.
The last time he felt that much pain was when he took the Delusional potion and had to endure the ethereal murmurs.
He went to the bathroom, took a warm shower, put on his normal clothes, and tried to sleep again.
....
April 29. 5:00.
Once again, Gregor woke up; this time, he decided to go for a walk. He knew he wouldn't find anyone in the streets; he just wanted some fresh air.
He left the hotel and began to wander around town.
Gregor had a paranoid look on his face because, at that point, he had already seen almost 300 visions out of the less than 500 inhabitants of Division Bell and still hadn't found the killer.
Is that motherf***er hiding in the sewer?!
Gregor began to think of the most illogical scenarios to discover the killer's identity.
Once again, he found himself in the southern part of town.
The construction sites were empty except for one worker who was there.
Wilson Tanner, Laura's husband.
Gregor had thought to talk with him but decided to not disturb his work.
Gregor went back to the hotel after his walk; his mind was finally clearer, and his spirituality had stabilized.
He entered his room and began to write something on a piece of paper.
....
April 29. 10:00
Gregor ate breakfast at the hotel's restaurant at 9:00. Afterward, he went back to his room and changed into his clown costume; he put on his usual makeup.
Once again, he entertained the people who came to see him.
He saw some people whose visions he hadn't had the chance to see, such as Matthew's mother, whom he had decided to ignore after seeing that Matthew's vision was the same as Eleanor's.
Instead of using his Eye to see their visions, he decided to preserve his spirituality, because even though it had already stabilized, he didn't want to risk losing control.
He had already seen most of the town's visions, and the people he hadn't had the opportunity to use his Eyes on appeared in other people's visions, such as the town's police.
....
April 29. 18:50.
Gregor went to the southern part of town once again, and again Wilson Tanner was there, still working hard even though his coworkers had already left an hour before.
Once again, Gregor left without disturbing the man.
....
Tuesday, April 30. 4:00
Gregor woke up in the middle of the night.
He changed his clothes and went for a walk.
He went to the southern part of town once again; this time, Wilson seemed to have just arrived.
This time, Gregor went to talk with him.
He calmly approached Wilson, who was getting ready to start his work.
He sat on the dirt floor next to Wilson.
"Why do you get here so early and leave so late?" Gregor asked, confused about why the man worked so hard instead of being with his wife.
Wilson looked at Gregor, not scared, but confused about why he was there.
"My wife is about to give birth; I want to make some extra money in case of any emergencies."
Before Gregor could say anything else, Wilson smirked and continued, "And I also want to buy a gift for my baby once I know their gender.
"I was thinking of buying a doll if it's a girl, and if it's a boy, a wooden horse.
"Unfortunately, those are too expensive; if I want to buy them, I have to work extra hard."
Wilson had a proud and excited look on his face as he told that to Gregor; he was looking forward to meeting his first child.
"You must be the clown tourist who came to town last week, right?" Wilson asked.
"Yes, Gregor Alighieri. Nice to meet you," Gregor said as he shook Wilson's hand.
Wilson shook Gregor's hand, "Nice to meet you, Gregor. I'm Wilson Tanner."
"Eleanor said that you're also a great magician," Wilson said as he got back to getting ready for his work.
"I'm a bit of everything. A clown, a magician…" He paused before continuing, "Wilson, can I trust you with a secret?"
Wilson found it strange that the man he had just met wanted to trust him with a secret, but he accepted.
"Of course, I won't tell anyone."
Gregor looked to the sky, admiring the crimson moon, which that day was in its first-quarter phase.
"I can see people's visions—visions of their future."
"Like a seer?" Wilson asked, still not paying much attention to Gregor.
"Not exactly, but you can consider it…" Gregor replied.
Wilson chuckled, "Can you see my future, Gregor?"
Gregor stayed silent for some time before answering in a low voice, "Yes… Yes, I can."
With Gregor's silence, Wilson knew something was wrong.
He turned to Gregor, "What do you see, Gregor?"
"You can believe it or not, just know I'm trying to help." Gregor paused. "Tomorrow, Wednesday, the killer will act again—take care of your family."
Even though Gregor didn't say it directly, Wilson understood what he meant.
"When?" Wilson asked.
"I don't know the exact time, but before 10:00."
Wilson got up, looking deep into Gregor's eyes from above.
"Can I trust you, Gregor?"
Gregor nodded.
After seeing Gregor nod in agreement, Wilson began to walk away to his home.
Gregor quickly got up and asked, "Why did you decide to believe me?"
Wilson stopped, turning to Gregor with a smile. "You came to town after the three murders happened; you can't be the killer, and even if you're lying, it'll be good to spend more time with my wife."
Gregor chuckled, "You'll be a good father, Wilson."
Gregor spent the rest of the day in his room, thinking about what course of action he should take.
That night, he didn't get a second of sleep.
....
Wednesday, May 1st. 4:00.
Without anyone noticing, someone was looking inside the room Laura and Wilson were sleeping through the window.
