Chapter 29: The mages' den
"Thank you very much witchers," the Duke appreciated.
It was already daybreak. Luisa and Zeke were back from the woods in their previous selves. The duke treated them well after hearing the good and bad news.
New, neat and clean clothes were given to them. They were treated to a good meal after freshening up. They decided to leave immediately they finished eating with the duke, his family didn't join for the meal but joined to see them off.
The duchess face was devoured of life when she heard the news. As they saw them off, her face and that of her daughters were still swollen out of too much crying.
Zeke and Luisa stood by there horses, "Don't thank us yet. We just hope that there aren't more of those Li`caburs out there, it will truly be a catastrophe. I will inform the council of witchers about the possibility of a pending outbreak of Li`caburs," Zeke responded.
"I still have to thank you. Even though I didn't get my son back, the town at least is out of danger for the meantime if what you're saying turns out true," the Duke replied. Zeke mounted his horse and Luisa did the same.
"Okay, but really...you don't have to thank me, it's my job and you pay and treat your business partners really well," Zeke added and they galloped out of the mansion, out of the town, heading for kimoira.
When they got there, they galloped straight for Nuka's office which was in the tower, one of the buildings for the council of witchers.
"You can go to your quarters for now, I don't think we'll be able to leave kimoira today," Zeke said as they unmounted their horses. Luisa nodded at him and walked away. Zeke opened the double sided doors to the tower and walked in.
In Nuka's office, present were two senior mages, by names-Rasha and Alleleus, also present were the senior witchers which were Zeke, the ginger red headed witcher- Garvinton, Nuka and the witcher who chose Gideon as his protege, he goes by the name-Chronos.
"This is bad!" Gar declared.
"I thought we wiped out those Li`caburs," Nuka added, a little in lament.
"Guess we were wrong, we haven't seen the last of these creatures. Now that it's early we'd better do what we did last time and make sure those Li`caburs stay extinct," Zeke suggested.
"Argh..." Nuka cringed at the idea.
"We have to think of another strategy. We lost way too many of our men on the last battle with the Li`caburs," Nuka responded.
"There's no other way, we better get control of this pending catastrophe before it gets out of control," Zeke replied.
They continued to discuss the pending battle, at some point in a arguing manner.
Meanwhile, Luisa was stopped on her way to her quarters by Carter.
"I'm fine, Carter. You don't have to worry," Luisa replied to his question about her welfare. "Okay. How was your first day on the job...as a protege, that is?" he continued.
"It was...okay, I guess. It was interesting and...I don't know if I should reveal this to you but, the Li`caburs are out in the open again. We battled with one...that was the mission," she replied.
"Oh my. That's not good at all. It took a whole lot of the mages and witchers of kimoira to battle those demons last time," Carter responded.
"That's the worst part. I wasn't part of kimoira when the battle occurred but the battle shook the four lands, lots of mages and witchers lost their lives... even knights of the four lands that joined in the fight. (Sighs) Zeke said he would report the issue to the council of witchers," she relayed.
"Okay. Want to see something that might cheer you up?" he offered.
"What is it?" she asked.
"You'll see, it's a surprise," he answered.
"I don't like surprises. What if I don't like it?" she objected. She was up all night, now she feels exhausted and all she just wanted was to give in to fatigue, to just eat and sleep till the next mission.
"It's something pretty interesting, so I'm sure you're going to like it," he insisted as he grabbed her hand to lead the way.
"No, I'm tired. I don't want to," Luisa protested.
"C'mon, just give it a try. Just the sight of it will drive fatigue away. I promise you won't be disappointed," he insisted as he continued to drag her gently along with him leading the way.
She didn't know why she wasn't being sassy and indifferent towards this boy, he just had that same jovial aura as Lindsey, that sweet and innocent nature which could get you to do anything and bear anything for them. She was tired but she still followed him anyway.
They continued to walk for a long while till they got to a grand entrance with mighty pillars- It was the mages' den.
Luisa was in agape. She never expected him to bring her here, it was an entire city of its own.
"What do you think?" Carter asked smiling at her.
"Wow..." Luisa voiced.
"Let's go," he grabbed her hand again. "Wait...wait" Luisa hesitated. "Am I allowed in there?"
He smiled that heart melting smile again, "Sure, but not every where...just like how the mages are not allowed everywhere in the witchers' den. Let me show you around, not everywhere though," he informed and she nodded.
There were three sections in kimoira; One, was the entrance...that was where the base of kimoira was, where all the witchers and mages meet, where visitors are welcomed.
Two, the witchers' den, where the witchers resides, where they train and carry out their witchery activities. Then there's the mages' den, where the mages reside, train and carry out their other activities.
The place was flooded with mages, young, old, and most of their eyes on the sunflower that just entered their midst.
What a beauty! Some of them were not opportune to see a woman for years now, not to talk of touch a woman. Luisa didn't like the way they were staring at her. If she gets the opportunity she would slit the throat of anyone who tries something funny, without even any second thoughts.
"Don't worry...you're with me," Carter assured.
"I'm not worried!" Luisa replied.
With her head high, they walked passed the unwanted attention. Carter showed her around. The mages' den was...interesting.
"And this is where mages my age or level spar," Carter showed her to a room.
It was large, the floor made of good wood that sparkled, various weapons hunged at every walls of the room. He collected a sword and tossed one to Luisa which she caught.
"I've always wanted to spar with you," he mentioned.
"I'm honored," she replied.
"No I am, milady," he objected and did a curtsey in front of her. Luisa chuckled,
"Let's even make a bet. If I win, we'll become friends officially," he offered and she scoffed.
"And if you lose?" she asked and he chuckled.
"Then I'll carry out three of your commandments," he answered.
"Hmmf...fair enough but you won't like my commandments, I can be extremely ruthless at times," she warned him and his handsome face gleamed with a smile.
"That's if you win. Bring it on!" he responded and Luisa charged at him first. Her attacks swift and skilled. Carter also defended himself from her so skillfully.
Two human mages walked towards the room and halted at the door.
"Well what do we have here? The infamous female witcher. She's even more dazzling in person," one of the mages started, with a mischievous grin on his lips.
"She's the sunflower that got the boys on their toes not too long ago, she came with Carter. Do you think they're in a relationship?" the other one questioned.
News really fly.
"I don't know, I don't care. But she's going to be mine, hehe," the first one grinned.
"Woah!" Carter exclaims as he was about to hit the ground.
Luisa had knocked him down and he held her arm for support as he fell, but it only made both of them to fall. Luisa felt her head hit his hard chest, she slowly raised her head and came in contact with his beautiful blue eyes.
It stared back at her and soon it fixated between her eyes and lips as he thought if it would be a good time to kiss her. He has always wanted to.
His heart flutter as he leaned in, Luisa moved her head a little away from him as she saw what was coming but he wasn't hurt by the little action, instead he continued and shut his eyes as their lips connected.
She...she kissed him back, his palm on the back of her head, the other on her waist as they deepened the kiss. It was his first kiss and the way she kissed him back just made it special, more than anything he could fantasize about, it made him fall even more in love with her.
