Lurking in the Shadows; Creature of the Night

Chapter 2: Burden of a blind woman

In one of the villages in the kingdom of Denver, Mirabelle and her family gathered at the table for their breakfast. Mirabelle was born into an average family and she was the second child. She had an elder sister, Gabrielle and a younger brother Kayden. Mirabelle's mother Mrs Nolan had always helped Mirabelle with everything because her daughter was blind. While they sat around the table to have their breakfast, Mrs Nolan insisted on feeding Mirabelle even though the young girl retorted saying she could do it herself. "Just let me take care of you Mirabelle!" Her mother said raising her voice a little. "Take it easy honey. You know our Mirabelle is a strong girl, she still needs to learn to do these things herself for times that you and I and her siblings won't be there to help" Mr Nolan said and his wife sighed. Mirabelle loved the fact that her mother cared about her so much and wanted to help but she wanted to learn to do things herself also because a day might come when no one would be there to help and she has to help herself somehow. "It's fine mother. You can feed me if you want, but another time I'll try and help myself"  Mirabelle said as she sought for her mother's hand and held it. Fortunately for her, her mother was sitting close so there was no need to search for her mother's hand for so long. Mrs Nolan tried to hold her tears back but she couldn't. The main reason she was crying at that moment was because she remembered the predicament Mirabelle was in. Her daughter was in her 20's and was supposed to be welcoming suitors by now but for everyone who came saying they were interested in her, turned their back the moment they found out that she was blind. This was all because of a curse.

"Mother please don't cry anymore. Our Mirabelle will be just fine" Gabrielle said as she patted her mother's back. "Yes mother. Sister Gabby is right" Kayden, the youngest of the household agreed to his sister's words and their mother calmed down a bit and wiped her tears.

"Don't worry honey. Everything will be fine" Mr Nolan said to his wife. "I love you all so much" Mirabelle said smiling while imagining the look on the faces of her family members.

"We love you too. Now, let's eat. I need to get to the palace soon. The King's right hand man had asked me to come plant some new flowers in the castle so I need to go early" Mr Nolan said and he ate with his family before he left for the palace.

Few minutes later, Gabrielle, Mirabelle and Mrs Nolan were sitting in the living room chatting when Gabrielle said to her mother "Mother, I'm meeting with Sir Thomas later today. So if you need me to go to the market, I can go now". "Ohhh okay. I'll go check my purse and see if the money I have is enough to buy everything we need" Mrs Nolan said as she headed to her room.

"You know, I'm happy you have someone who's interested in you. I'm sure Sir Thomas is a good man"  Mirabelle said and Gabrielle smiled as she held her sister's hand. "Yes Sir Thomas is a good man but I don't know if he's the one for me that's why I'm holding back a little" Gabrielle uttered and Mirabelle chuckled lightly before saying "Don't worry about that. If he's the one for you, he'll do everything to keep you and show you how much he loves you and how much he wants to start a family with you" Mirabelle said and Gabrielle uttered "You're right. Let's see how it all goes. I pray you find someone that truly loves you my dear sister".

"Thank you Gabby" Mirabelle said and the sisters hugged each other.

Gabrielle was a very fine woman and she was older than Mirabelle with two years. She had a perfect skin, long black hair, pretty blue eyes and a slender body. She was beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside and she had alot of suitors including Sir Thomas. Which was the only one that manged to catch her attention. As for Mirabelle, she had a beautiful body shape also and long brown hair with freckles resting on the bridge of her nose and few parts of her cheeks. But the men that came her way always turned their back on her after finding out that she was blind because they didn't want the burden of being with a blind woman.
