Chapter 38: Scheme against the king
It was dinner time at the castle and the king was seated at the table alone as he waited for the cook to bring his meal. Though he could live without eating human food, he still did just to ease the atmosphere for the human servants who hadn't stayed long in the palace, because for them it would certainly be strange if their king never ate what was being prepared in the palace. For the servants who had been working in the palace for years, they knew the king wasn't a normal person so they wouldn't be surprised if they heard that the king could live perfectly well without human food.
To be honest, Sebastian could have his castle without a kitchen or rather have a kitchen and a cook that only prepares human blood if possible. That would be his preferred choice but he was already a strange person as it is. Even when he was little, he could still stay without human food. Himself and his family only ate human meals out of will and not because they couldn't do without it like humans.
Almost getting impatient, not because he was hungry but he wasn't the type to wait on someone, especially on humans. Usually, they were the ones who did the waiting not him. Sebastian cocked his head to the side and glared at the door where the cook was supposed to come through. With the last string of patience almost snapping, the cook came out and a nervous and shaky Helena trailed behind her and lastly, the head servant Evon followed. The cook placed the dishes before the king "I deeply apologize milord for the delay of your meal. Evon suggested that Helena served your meal but the child retorted at first because she was nervous" the cook explained. They all couldn't bring their selves to look up at the king because from where they were standing, they knew he might already be brimming with anger.
"Leave" they heard Sebastian say and they all scurried away with their heads still down.
Sebastian stared at the servings for a while before taking up the spoon and eating a small amount of what was served. He then left to his quarters and along with him, a servant he wanted to drink from.
Back in the kitchen, the cook glared at Helena "You almost put us in trouble! Be glad the king wasn't very pissed if not we would have had our heads chopped off and rolling on the floor". "I'm sorry. Being that it was my first time, I was really nervous" Helena uttered. Evon heaved a sigh and said "Take it easy on her. She's just a child, it's all new to her". "I won't bother myself about this anymore. When the child is ready, she can work in the kitchen but by the looks of things she can't do that now. So she should stick to dusting the windows and wiping the floors for now" the cook angrily said. "Maria.." Evon called out. "I'm sorry but have you forgotten so quickly how the king can be? I'm human and this child here is also human. You're a vampire, the odds isn't in our favor. Took weeks before the king could accept me as his cook, I won't let a new comer ruin this for me" Maria the plum lady said as she gestured Helena to leave the kitchen.
Evon was quiet for a while, she couldn't blame Maria for acting this way. The king had placed fear in their hearts so much that everyone around the king had to double check themselves and the service they offered the king every single time.
"Let's go" Evon told Helena and they both walked out of the kitchen.
Heading back to the servants quarters, Helena and Evon parted ways and Helena quickly entered her room and placed her hand over her palpitating heart. What kind of mess did her uncle put her in? Being in this palace was like walking on eggshells and with the behavior Maria just exhibited, Helena feared the king more.
"Thank goodness I could put a small amount into his food. Now, it's up to nature" Helena said as she threw herself on the small bed that could only let one person lay.
