Lurking in the Shadows; Creature of the Night

Chapter 9: Luck

The blood was wiped off the body of the coachman and he was wrapped and kept in a special place, waiting to be examined by the Bishop later on.

The king offered Mr Nolan a seat as his wound was being treated. After that had been done, the king called on him. "Yes your majesty. " Mr Nolan answered. "Tell me exactly what happened" Sebastian said with a serious expression plastered on his face. "Your majesty, forgive me but my account of what happened is a very strange one" Mr Nolan said as he began to recall the strange event he experienced that morning with a dreaded and shaken look on his face.

"Mmm..Go on" Sebastian ordered him. "Your majesty, I was on my way to the castle when I noticed that my carriage had stopped moving and everywhere was strangely quiet. I came out of my carriage to see that my Coachman and ally, Matthew was dead. His throat was slit open and it was a very terrible sight your majesty." He paused, wanting to catch his breath. "Everything was just so strange your majesty, the horses which were supposed to be scared by the sight, strangely kept quiet and still like nothing had happened. I looked around to see if there was anyone around but there was no single soul. The next moment, I saw a man appear right before me with two other men. The one who looked like the leader had white hair and very black eyes. He had no pupil, his entire eye was pitch black. He came at me with a dagger, asking where I was going and if I had any gold with me. I told him I was heading to the palace and I didn't have any gold with me but he didn't believe me. He attacked me and I fought back. The other men also attacked me. Your majesty, I did my best to fight them but they were too strong and it seemed like they used magic because they were appearing and disappearing as they attacked me your majesty" Mr Nolan continued.

"But luckily, they left me and went inside my carriage to search it but found nothing they could take. When they realized I had told them the truth, they left. Disappeared into thin air." The man concluded. "Where exactly did this happen?" Sebastian asked. "In Blackthorn sire" Mr Nolan replied quickly.

Sebastian narrowed his eyes as he listened to what Mr Nolan said. "Strange indeed" Sebastian commented after Mr Nolan finished his narration. Mr Nolan breathed heavily as he remembered every second of what had happened. Sebastian stared at him and he was sure the man was traumatized by the event. "Would you like to join me for breakfast Mr Nolan?" Sebastian asked.

Mr Nolan agreed to the king's kind gesture because it was truly a privilege to have a meal with the king and he also counted himself lucky because the stories he had heard about the king was inhumane and it made everyone afraid of the king but he somehow found favor in the sight of the king.

Mr Nolan's clothes were changes before he sat at the table with Sebastian. Mr Nolan ate slowly and tried not to allow even a grain of rice fall on the floor or even the table. Sebastian's noticed the man's stiffness and said "You need to relax Mr Nolan. I won't harm you, you should know that my now" Sebastian said. "Your majesty, it's just that I'm not used to eating with the king. Forgive my stiffness, your majesty" Mr Nolan said as he slightly bowed his head.

Sebastian gave a slight smile before turning to his meal. "Oh, your majesty, the flowers I brought is damaged due to my encounter earlier. I apologise" Mr Nolan said. " I understand. Also, you'll need to rest till you have fully recovered before coming to work again" Sebastian said and Mr Nolan nodded, concurring to what the king said.

After their meal, Sebastian ordered that one of his carriages be given to Mr Nolan and also two men from his guards be Mr Nolan's personal guards. Though to Mr Nolan, everything seemed too much but he couldn't refuse. After all there wasn't any human he knows or heard of that had enjoyed the kindness of the king. So he was indeed lucky.
