Chapter 4: EP 4: When Love is Lost
Ronan
My 6am alarm buzzed out loud — I'll never get used to the alarm ringing like that. I used my thumb to massage my eyes as I hope the aching that comes with opening my eyes after a long night will wear off.
I checked beside me, hoping to see Sarah, but she wasn't in bed.
"Where as she gone?" I muttered. "Did she run away after what happened yesterday with her parents!?"
My thoughts got the best part of me as I wandered into what happened yesterday.
It was an ugly scene for Sarah as her parents disowned her. Well, they gave her a choice to follow them or stay behind and get disowned, she chose the latter —
What was she thinking? That was the only question I could ask myself.
I sighed and dragged my buttocks against the bed. I wore my slip-ons and walked towards the bathroom. I brushed my teeth. I got out, but still I haven't seen Sarah — Where is she?
"Sarah! Sarah!!" I called out, but there was no reply.
I was about going out of the room to search for her when I got a call — Elena. Immediately, my mind travelled down memory lane — Today is my mother's remembrance and I need to find someone!
I picked the call. "I know, I know… I'm on my way," I said, hoping to avoid getting bashed.
It was already 7:41AM. I dressed up and zoomed out. I went to my usual flower shop.
"Good morning, please give me the usual." I asked.
The saleswoman walked up to me. "Mr. Steele, we are sold out on that particular flower, a lady purchased it some minutes ago. I can recommend a better one for you though,"
That sounded amusing, but I wasn't interested. Lilies were my mother's favorite flower and I wouldn't give her less.
"No, I'll check other stores," I said and left.
I visited multiple stores until I came across one who sells. I purchased it and ran off. When I got to where my mom was buried, a lily flower was already there.
I got a glimpse of who dropped it, but she was faraway. I ran towards her, but she already boarded a cab and left. I heaved a sigh, paid my tribute to my mom and left.
When I got home, I buried myself in a chair beside me.
"When are we moving out? This place feels stuffy," I jerked myself up to check who was talking.
It was Sarah. I sat upright, "Where have you been?" I asked her.
"Just down the street," she replied.
I was about to say something when Elena called. "Did you find out about the mysterious person?" She asked.
"Unfortunately, I didn't. Before I could she already boarded a cab,"
"She?"
"Yes, the person is a lady I presume."
"Then we will find out soon enough,"
"I hope so," I replied as I stood up.
"What's my schedule for the day?" I asked, walking into my room. I placed the phone on loudspeaker as I undressed.
"Schedule? You're totally free today. Why do you have to ask me that question every year? I'll suggest you take your wife outside. There would be a paparazzi we hired because of Sarah. He'll hide Sarah's face and identity,"
"What would I do without you," I scoffed before Sarah's voice jerked me off balance.
"You don't have to keep me hidden," she said. "My parents found out about it and I'm officially disowned — All thanks to you,"
"It was never our intention for that to happen," Elena said.
"Well, you need to help me find my sister. At least if I have been disowned, I should be able to have my sister,"
"Sure, we are on it." Elena responded.
"Alright then,"
She was about to walk away when Elena called her back. "Sarah,"
"Yes?"
"Please, as you go out with my boss, make sure you act in love. They aren't still convinced that he is legally married."
"What do they believe?" Sarah asked.
"That he is on a contractual marriage,"
"Isn't that true?" Sarah's voice was laced with a straight face.
"Yes, it is. But, please just for today and we will find your sister." Elena promised.
"Alright then," Sarah responded and I disconnected the call.

It was 5pm and it sounded like the perfect time to take solace in the sunset. Sarah and I took a walk down the park holding hands. I sighted the first flower shop I went to this morning.
"Let us grab something here," I pointed at the store.
She followed behind me. I held the door opened for Sarah as she walked in and I closed the door behind her. The salesperson stared at both of us intently and it crept me out.
"What's wrong?"
"This was the lady who purchased the last Lily flower," she stared at Sarah.
I wanted to join the pieces together, but I don't want to overthink the scenario. Still, I couldn't keep myself from asking.
"Why did you need a lily flower?" I asked.
"It is none of your business,"
I threw my hands in the air and left them hanging, then I slapped my palm across each other. "Okay,"
"Can we go home? I mean to Ellis…"
"Ellis! Ellis! Why would I forget about her," I thought and I stole a glance at Sarah. "Yeah, we should,"
When we got to the apartment, we packed our bags, entered the car and left for my house. In one hour, we arrived and Ellis was there waiting for me.
"Daddy!" Her two feets swung rapidly and a few meters away from me, she threw herself at me.
"I have missed you baby,"
She felt disturbed and continued searching for something that I don't know.
"What are you looking for?"
"Where is your wife? I know you are married now." She said and stared at Sarah. "Miss. Sarah, where is my dad's wife?"
Sarah rolled her eyes towards me without tilting her head. "Errr –" she stared at me again. "I'm his wife now," she replied.
I was utterly shocked. I thought she would lie and everyone would have peace, but she didn't. Ellis lips were slightly apart as her eyes wandered between Sarah and I.
As we got inside, I took Sarah to my room and locked the door behind me. "What is it?" She asked me.
"Why did you tell her the truth?" I asked calmly.
"It is just the right thing to do. You can see in her eyes that she was surprised, but glad,"
Yeah, Sarah is right. But for how long? This is a contractual marriage and it is bound to end in divorce. I don't want my daughter to be exposed to that kind of lifestyle. But as for now, she's my wife — Maybe I should live in the moment.
"I'll be going downstairs to prepare dinner before it is too late," Sarah said and dismissed herself.
I watched her leave, I heaved a sigh and sat down on the bed. It has been a rough few hours and then, I couldn't help but think about the flower Sarah purchased this morning.
I needed answers and I needed it right away, but I don't know how and the answer came right.
*You have to ask anyway, you need to find out*
I walked down the stairs. Approaching the kitchen, I overheard Sarah discussing over the phone with someone. I hid behind the wall that separates the kitchen from the hallway that led to the living room.
"Have you been able to find your sister?" The unknown female voice asked.
"No, but Ronan promised me that he'll help me out,"
"Okay — But it must be easy visiting her grave from New York City without trying to avoid the prying eyes of your parents,"
"Yeah, it was easy. I woke up earlier in the morning. The flower shop is close to the apartment we used. Luckily for me, I purchased the last Lily flower."
"Maybe it is this wedding that is showering you with luck," I heard both of them laugh hysterically. "So, have you found any family member of that woman?"
"You mean the woman who gave me her eyes?" Sarah asked.
"Yes,"
"Well, I haven't. And I really want to. But, they are all out of reach and it is annoying."
"What's her name again? Maybe I'd help you ask around,"
"Errrr Mrs. Hayley Williams,"
Hayley Williams… That's my mother's name. Sarah is the girl my mother donated her eyes to? The young girl I grew fond of before I traveled to Germany. Why didn't I recognize her?
Still deep in thoughts I heard the doorbell. Who could it be? I asked myself as I walked towards the door, but Sarah was already trailing behind me.
"Don't worry, I'll get it." I assured her and she stopped in her tracks.
When I checked the monitor, my feet froze, but my head didn't as I turned around to find Sarah standing still.
"Who is that?" She asked. I wanted to respond, but she was determined to find out for herself.
She happily screamed out loud when she realized it was her sister, my runaway bride. She unlocked the door and hugged Piper.
As she pulled away, and as she did, I realized the energy wasn't reciprocated.
"What is wrong sis?" Sarah asked, catching her breath with every word she said.
"Do you know me? I'm not your sister." Piper said in a very cold tone.
"You're my sister." Sarah reached for Piper's hand and revealed the scar hidden around her elbow. "I gave you this scar, remember?"
I felt Sarah's eyes searching for familiarity in Piper's eyes. "I'm not your sister. Your sister is dead."
Piper walked inside. "She is the one you got married to?" She asked me.
"Yes, she is."
"I have tried to run and I hate to inform you, my brothers want you to take me in and throw her away," she pointed at Sarah.
"I can't just throw her away. Your family should have not bailed in the first place!"
"But they did and if you won't accept me back, the consequences will be serious." She gave an evil grin. "Spoilers alert? It will start with your stocks crashing to seeing everything you built crumble,"
"Is that a threat?"
"I'm sorry, if I don't deliver their message as they would, I don't know what will happen,"
In this moment, all I could think about wasn't my stock crashing; All I could think of is Sarah.
Her parents disowned her and the only family she could rely on has denied her. She has been through a lot in just a few days and instinctively, I just want to protect her. But I don't know what to do, I can't jeopardize Ellis' future too.
I know I'm stuck and I know I need to find a way to get myself out of this situation.
