Chapter 12: Thought It Was Brother And Sister!
When Ryuji flew onto the boat, Diana was already there waiting for him. To his surprise, besides Steve, who was busy tying the rigging, another familiar figure was present—Doutzen Carlos.
Why is she here?
Does she want to leave too?
But there was no time for unnecessary thoughts. Diana stepped forward, and before she could speak, Ryuji reassured her, "Her recovery went faster than I expected. She's awake now, and if I'm right, she'll be ready to leave the recovery zone tomorrow."
"That's wonderful."
"Oh, and this… she asked me to give it to you."
"The Starlight Crown?" Diana took it into her hands, holding the powerful symbol of the strongest Amazon warrior. The crown carried Antiope's hopes and expectations, and she could feel its weight.
"Let's go."
"Yeah."
Just as they turned, a thunderous sound of galloping hooves erupted behind them—thump, thump, thump.
Ryuji sighed and shrugged. "Looks like I'm not leaving just yet."
The Amazon Queen had ridden up to them, her eyes focused on Diana. Gritting her teeth, Diana stepped forward and stood firm. "I have to leave, Mother. Innocent people are dying out there, and I can't just stand by and watch. If no one else will face Ares, then I must go."
Ryuji watched silently as Diana spoke, her face a mix of determination and innocence. At this point, she's still so naive and headstrong.
The Queen dismounted her horse and walked toward Diana, her face heavy with sorrow. "You don't understand… there is so much you don't know."
"I know enough!" Diana declared, her voice resolute. "I'm willing to fight for those who can't protect themselves—just like you once did!"
Ryuji muttered to himself, You really don't understand much at all. Listen to your elders; they might save you from trouble.
"If you leave, you may never come back," the Queen said softly. Her daughter was slipping away from her, like a kite with a broken string, and her voice trembled with tears.
"What good would it do for me to stay here?"
"Be careful of the world of men, Diana," the Queen warned, her voice heavy with love and grief. "They are not worthy of your saving. You are my love, and today… you are also my greatest sorrow."
"..."
With that, the farewell ended. Diana turned, striding purposefully toward the human world.
"Goodbye, Your Majesty! Don't worry, I'll take good care of her," Ryuji said with an exaggerated bow, putting on a self-righteous gentleman's act.
The Queen gave him a calm, indifferent look and nodded silently. In her mind, her daughter's departure was inevitable—whether Ryuji was here or not. He was merely incidental to the greater destiny unfolding before them.
After all, he had saved Antiope.
Feeling a little awkward under her gaze, Ryuji smiled sheepishly. "Uh… Goodbye!"
He turned to leave, but before he could take another step, the Queen called out loudly, "Who are you?"
Ryuji paused, his back to her, and raised a hand in farewell. "A… homeless wanderer."
"..."
A homeless wanderer, huh?
The cool night breeze rippled across the water, and the small boat slowly drifted away under the moonlight.
Diana stared back at the land she had called home her entire life. She watched her mother's shrinking figure until it vanished completely, hidden behind the mist and barriers of Themyscira.
Turning away with a sigh, Diana glanced at Ryuji, who was already chatting casually with Doutzen Carlos.
"Carlos, why are you here?"
"I thought you were interesting," Doutzen said, her voice lighthearted. "Going out into the world might be good training for me."
Ryuji stared at her, frustrated. Was this Victoria's Secret supermodel trying to get herself killed? She wasn't equipped like Diana, and according to the system, she was only at an "elite" combat level—the same level as Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow. A battlefield as brutal as World War I was no place for her.
If the Widow herself showed up here, even she'd have trouble staying alive. Doutzen had none of Diana's enchanted weapons or superhuman abilities—so why was she here?
"Carlos? When did you change your name?" Diana asked, puzzled.
"He changed it for me!" Doutzen replied, smirking and pointing at Ryuji. "I'm Doutzen Carlos now. I think he's up to no good."
Ryuji gave a helpless shrug, though his name and hers sounding alike made him grimace.
Diana shook her head, uninterested in the banter. She turned to Steve, who was securing the rigging. "How much longer until we reach the battlefield?"
"Which battlefield?" Steve asked, glancing up. "The Western Front stretches over 400 miles, from the Alps all the way to the North Sea."
"Take me to the most intense part of the fight." Diana's voice burned with determination.
The two quickly switched to speaking in English, leaving Ryuji to rely on Doutzen as his interpreter.
It was strange.
According to the system, there was a slim chance of gaining a "talent" when touching someone classified as an elite-level or higher combatant. Despite meeting Diana multiple times, Ryuji hadn't triggered anything.
It seemed that when interacting with someone of a much higher level, the odds were practically zero. Doutzen, however, was only at the elite level, so theoretically…
But he'd shaken hands with nearly every Amazon on the island, and still, nothing. Not even their "language talent," which was as common as breathing for them.
The system's probabilities are ridiculous.
"I'll find Ares, and I'll stop him!" Diana declared confidently.
Steve paused, eyeing her skeptically. A secluded island of warrior women, a man who could summon wings, and an ancient sword that supposedly defeated a god… The world was becoming far stranger than he'd ever imagined.
Still, he wasn't convinced. "I appreciate your enthusiasm, but this war isn't that simple. There's nothing you or I can do. Let's go back to London first. We can figure out how to make a real difference there."
"War is caused by human greed, not a god of war," Steve added firmly. "Killing one man—or god—won't stop all of this."
Ryuji interjected smoothly, "I told you. He's not going to take you to the battlefield. His priority is to deliver that notebook of his."
He smiled slyly, glancing at Diana. It wouldn't do for her to start developing favorable feelings toward Steve.
