Chapter 14: First Talent!
A man with his own theme song!
Wait, where did the music come from?
———
After standing there in disbelief, Diana finally realized that Ryuji was humming it himself. She didn't know why, but there was an epic vibe, like the feeling of sailing across vast seas.
But...
"Hey, what are you doing?"
"Don't bother me; let me savor this moment of solitude!" Ryuji waved her off.
He wasn't actually a man with his own background music. He was humming "The Medallion Calls" from Pirates of the Caribbean—although it was only about 70% accurate.
Diana frowned. Solitude?
If she were familiar with Earth culture, she might've called this the peak of "chūnibyō."
Steve had a constipated look on his face, wondering if everyone on this ship had lost their minds. Well, everyone except him, of course.
The billowing smoke hit their faces, breaking the so-called 'solitude' completely. The wind shifted, and black smoke from the diesel steamer ahead blasted straight at their schooner, almost smothering Ryuji.
"Cough, cough!" Ryuji jumped off the edge of the ship. "I don't like London!"
"Neither do I. It's so ugly. Won't the people here die from all this poison?" Diana scowled.
The sky was a dull gray, and so was the city beneath it. The atmosphere felt oppressive, suffocating even. Smoke and grime covered everything, as though the entire place were a battlefield choked with gunpowder.
"Maybe it's killing them. You just get used to it," Ryuji shrugged.
"You can get used to this?" Diana looked at him in disbelief.
"Humans adapt, Diana. Don't underestimate us." Ryuji smirked.
After landing, Diana didn't question why Ryuji held her hand. He had already told her earlier that a lady shouldn't behave too casually.
On the other hand, Carlos seemed to take everything in with unreserved curiosity. If Ryuji hadn't been keeping an eye on her, she might've wandered off and gotten lost. Diana's cloak kept her from standing out, but Carlos—dressed in her signature Amazon gear with two swords strapped to her back—was far less subtle.
A double-swords user? Interesting.
Eventually, they went to buy clothes to blend in.
Then came Steve's secretary—Etta Candy.
"Thank goodness you're alive."
The two hugged briefly.
"I thought you were dead until I got your call," Etta said with a cheerful smile before turning to Diana. "My name's Etta Candy, Steve Trevor's secretary."
"What's a secretary?" Diana asked curiously.
"I do everything. Wherever he goes, I go. Whatever he asks, I do."
"In our world, we call that a slave."
"I like her already." Etta grinned while giving Steve a look.
"Okay, ladies, let's keep moving," Steve interrupted.
"It's not slavery, but it's close enough," Etta joked. "At least the pay is decent. You could call it paid manual labor."
Soon enough, Diana and Carlos were dressed in more conventional outfits. Diana's was similar to her attire in the future—practical and modest, yet still commanding. Carlos wore something tighter and more stylized, hinting at her Amazonian roots.
As for trousers, they were simple and efficient.
Ryuji didn't know much about early 20th-century British fashion, but it honestly didn't matter. Retro British styles weren't that different from modern ones, at least not on the streets.
After an exhausting meeting, they were finally introduced to Sir Patrick Morgan—the man who was, in reality, Ares, the God of War.
Suddenly, the system's voice rang in Ryuji's mind.
[Warning! Host, the individual in front of you possesses demigod-level power. With your current strength, confrontation is unwise. Recommendation: flee immediately or... surrender.]
Surrender your sister!
Run? You've got to be kidding me.
Ryuji maintained a polite smile throughout.
"This is your leader?" Diana finally snapped. "How can you believe what he says? And you—your job was just to deliver that notebook?"
"NO!" Steve looked distressed. "I didn't have a choice. I couldn't change anything."
"You didn't even try to resist." Diana's disappointment was palpable. "This is Ares. He will never negotiate or surrender."
She looked at Steve coldly. "Maybe Ryuji was right. You were only using me to escape Paradise Island."
With that, she turned on her heel and walked away.
Carlos snorted. "We should've killed him back then."
Ryuji raised a brow. Did she mean Steve or Ares?
Steve glared at Ryuji, piecing together that he'd said something behind his back. Still, he quickly regrouped. "I'll take you to the front lines. We'll probably die, but hey—terrible ideas are all I've got. Let me grab some help first."
He stormed out, leaving Diana hesitating for just a moment before following.
Carlos muttered to Ryuji, "Diana's starting to warm up to that spy. You'd better step up your game."
"What are you talking about?" Ryuji scratched his head. "Let's just follow them for now."
Diana's goal was to kill Ares.
As for Ryuji, he was stuck in 1918. He had no connections, no resources, and no power to get to the frontlines alone. He could tell Diana that Sir Patrick was Ares, but that would mean a big fight breaking out in London.
And let's be real—whether they could defeat Ares was a huge question mark. Plus, innocent people might get caught in the chaos.
It was better to stick with Steve for now.
In a rowdy tavern, they soon met two old acquaintances: Samir, a master undercover operative fluent in multiple languages, and Charlie, a sniper who wasn't quite as "legendary" as advertised.
"This is Diana. Carlos. Samir."
"Hello."
"And this," Steve added reluctantly, "is Ryuji."
Samir immediately picked up on the tension between Steve and Ryuji, but shook hands politely.
Then, the system chimed in again.
"Congratulations to the host! Talent acquired: Language Proficiency—English (Advanced), French (Advanced)..."
Ryuji froze.
This... was unexpected. Surprise talents were the best kind of reward.
