Chapter 9: knocked Away By Diana
"You ask me what magic is… well, this…?"
Ryuji scratched his head. He wasn't entirely sure how to explain magic, so he decided to piece something together based on what he'd seen in anime.
"Magic is the mysterious force that exists in the legends. Honestly, I don't fully understand it either. I just came into contact with it recently. The basic idea is this: there's a kind of power in everything around us, and magicians can extract it to perform attacks, healing, defense, or other effects."
"Like this."
Ryuji stretched out his palm, and glowing, fiery red symbols began to spin in his hand. The next second—roaring flames burst forth, erupting like a dragon of fire.
The ground where the flames struck turned black and scorched.
Dark symbols could be written with thought alone. Spells formed by these symbols could either manifest gradually as they were written or appear in an instant once condensed.
For simpler spells, using thought alone worked perfectly. More complex ones? Well, those took some practice.
Diana's eyes gleamed with fascination as she watched.
"This is an example of elemental magic," Ryuji continued. "The air contains wild fire elements. A magician can extract these elements, condense them into flames, and use them to enhance their attacks."
He then wrote a symbol on his chest—"Absolute Defense."
"The earth contains power too: in rocks, soil, and metals. This earth element can be used for defense. Here, you can test it. Just… hold back a bit, okay?"
The system had already informed Ryuji that Diana's strength currently sat at the peak of heroic level.
Although she hadn't unleashed her full potential yet, Paradise Island had long restricted her power. She simply never had the chance to exert herself fully. If armed with her divine artifacts, her strength could even surge into legendary late-stage.
At the height of her abilities—when she fought Ares, the God of War—Diana awakened. She ascended to the legendary peak, channeling Zeus' lightning, temporarily breaching into the demigod realm to defeat Ares.
After the battle, however, she fell back to her legendary peak state.
As for Ryuji? Right now, he was only at heroic peak. Testing his limits with Diana was the perfect opportunity.
---
Diana smiled, a challenging glint in her eye.
"Are you sure about this?"
"Of course! Go ahead," Ryuji nodded confidently.
With that, Diana's fist shot forward like a cannonball.
Ryuji didn't even have time to react before he was blasted clean off his feet.
---
He soared through the air spectacularly—farther and farther—until his voice echoed faintly behind him.
"I knew I should've held back!"
As Ryuji spun mid-air, dazed, he realized something important:
"Absolute Defense" wasn't as absolute as it sounded. It shattered completely.
---
The impact proved one thing: Diana had hit him using her peak heroic strength.
This wasn't just strength—it was super strength. Comparable to the likes of Superman, her power allowed her to obliterate tanks with ease.
Her arsenal included incredible speed, reflexes, and durability—though unlike Clark, she didn't have heat vision.
Eventually, after a hundred meters of flight, Ryuji managed to stabilize himself. He spread his black angelic wings, regaining his balance.
With an admittedly cool and dramatic landing, he touched down.
Well, mostly cool—his wind-blown hair was a different story.
---
Diana laughed softly at his appearance.
Despite his attempt at composure, Ryuji still looked baffled.
"Not bad," Diana said, clearly surprised. "You're unscathed."
Her punch could turn men into pulp. But Ryuji had simply flown… and survived. She'd seen nothing like it before.
"So you're a magician, not… a fallen angel?"
---
The term "fallen angel" caught Ryuji off guard. Then it hit him—it must've been the wings.
"Fallen angel? Oh, this?" He gestured to his black wings. "Yeah, no. My magic is called 'Dark Script.' The wings just come out black because of it. Honestly, I wish I could make them white. Then I'd look like an angel instead."
He shrugged dramatically, flashing a sheepish smile.
---
Diana frowned. "The power of darkness?"
Uh oh.
Amazonian culture had a deep aversion to evil forces. If she associated his powers with something sinister…
"Listen, Diana. Darkness isn't inherently evil," Ryuji said quickly. "There's no such thing as evil power—only evil people. Darkness, light… it's about how you use it."
Diana tilted her head skeptically.
"Here, let me show you," he offered.
He wrote the word "Wings" on Diana's back.
---
"Fair warning: the first time I did this, it felt like my spine was on fire," Ryuji said.
Moments later, a pair of sleek, black wings burst from Diana's back.
She stretched them experimentally. "It's fine. I don't feel anything unusual."
Ryuji blinked, slightly stunned.
Must be her divine blood. Zeus' legacy gave her far greater resilience than any mortal—or himself.
---
With a powerful flap of her wings, Diana shot into the sky.
Ryuji grinned, following after her.
"You believe me now?" he asked, flying alongside her.
"I never doubted you," Diana replied with a smile.
"Oh."
---
Diana suddenly glanced at him with mischief in her eyes.
"Want to race?"
Ryuji grinned. "You're on!"
Together, the two soared above Paradise Island, darting through the air like twin comets.
One would pull ahead, the other would catch up—neither growing tired as they laughed and flew.
---
Below, the Amazons stared in utter confusion.
"What… what is that?" one warrior muttered, shielding her eyes.
Even Queen Hippolyta frowned deeply, watching her daughter and the strange man with narrowed eyes.
---
Ryuji, meanwhile, could only think of an old line of poetry.
"In the heavens, let us be lovebirds. On Earth, let us be entwined branches."
…Not that he said it aloud.
