Marvel: The Gourmet God

Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Activating the Devour System

Johnny felt like his life was a tragedy.

His carefree existence came to an abrupt end when a sudden missile exploded nearby, leaving his body shattered beyond recognition.

It was a terrorist attack. The missile detonated right next to Johnny, tearing him apart. Death claimed him in an instant.

When Johnny regained consciousness, he found himself in a dark, cramped dungeon.

"Where... Where am I?"

Johnny was utterly confused.

He couldn't comprehend how, one moment, he had been enjoying his blissful life as a happy couch potato, indulging in some leisurely entertainment, and the next, after the searing pain of an explosion, everything went black. Now, here he was—in this strange, eerie place!

"Did I... transmigrate? No way..."

Johnny's face was a mask of bewilderment.

"And even if I did, could someone at least tell me what kind of hellhole this is?"

As Johnny struggled to make sense of the situation, the sound of footsteps caught his attention.

A group of guards clad in golden armor, wielding long spears and shields, marched past the entrance of his cell.

"What the... Golden armor and spears? Where the heck have I ended up?"

Seeing the guards' medieval attire only deepened Johnny's confusion. He desperately wanted to figure out where he had landed.

"Hey! Guards! I demand to see a lawyer!"

Johnny scrambled to his feet and rushed to the metal bars of his cell, banging on them furiously as he shouted at the passing guards.

His actions drew the attention of two guards who stopped in their tracks and turned to look at him.

However, Johnny quickly realized that might not have been the smartest move.

Their expressions were anything but friendly.

"Wait a minute... Wasn't this cell supposed to hold a damned fire creature? How did it become a human?"

One of the guards, surprised at the sight of Johnny, voiced his confusion.

The two guards were tall and imposing, their bulk almost entirely blocking Johnny's view from the cell door.

"Uh, excuse me, could you kindly tell me where I am?"

Faced with their overbearing presence, Johnny immediately backed down, speaking with a sheepish tone.

"This is the Great Divine Realm of Asgard! Human, speak quickly—how did you infiltrate this place?"

One guard's piercing gaze and the faint aura of pressure radiating from him made Johnny's legs feel weak. His words, however, struck Johnny like a bolt of lightning.

Asgard? The Divine Realm?

Wasn't that the realm of the Nine Realms in the Marvel Universe, home to Odin, the All-Father, and Thor, the God of Thunder?

"Infiltrate? I didn't infiltrate anything! I was just at home, minding my business, when everything went black, and I woke up here. I swear, I haven't done anything wrong!"

Johnny tried to explain, but his words only made the guards more suspicious.

"A human from Midgard appearing in the Divine Realm? Preposterous! How could you possibly arrive here suddenly?"

The guards clearly didn't believe his story.

"This must be a spy! With Odin leading the army on campaign and absent from the realm, this infiltrator must be plotting something. Seize him immediately!"

One guard's spear began to glow with intense energy, golden light radiating from its tip. The next moment, a blast of energy shot out and struck Johnny, who was utterly defenseless.

"Damn it!"

In excruciating pain, Johnny could only curse bitterly in his mind before everything went black once more. His body convulsed before collapsing to the ground, lifeless and silent.

"Itte, he seems dead..."

The guard who had attacked Johnny hesitated as he saw Johnny collapse, lifeless, after just one strike.

"Dead is better. Who cares about the prisoners in this dungeon? Whether he's an infiltrator or not, we can't afford any risks. It's better to kill the wrong person than to let one go free. If anything goes wrong, we'll be held responsible."

One of the guards jabbed Johnny's body a few more times with his spear, the sharp tip effortlessly piercing through him.

If Johnny were still conscious, he would have cursed them loudly.

"Damn Asgardians! So unreasonable!"

"Looks like he's truly dead. Leave him be. When the shift changes, we'll have someone drag the corpse out. The beasts in the forest will take care of it nicely."

Muttering to themselves, the two guards left. To them, a dead prisoner meant more room in Asgard's dungeon—space that could be used for more pressing matters.

After all, keeping prisoners, maintaining secure cells, and providing food and water wasn't cheap.

But what the two guards didn't know was that shortly after they left, something strange began to happen to Johnny's "lifeless" body.

A dark, eerie energy emerged from within him, enveloping his body entirely.

Under the influence of this mysterious energy, the wounds left by the guards' spear began to heal rapidly. In moments, his body was restored to its unblemished state, as if nothing had ever happened.

"Ding! System binding in progress! Scanning physical condition…"

"Host's life detected to be on the verge of extinction. Initiating revival…"

"Devour System binding complete!"

As Johnny's injuries healed, his consciousness began to return. In his mind, an unfamiliar electronic voice echoed.

"Is this... a cheat system?"

Hearing the strange voice, Johnny couldn't help but think.

So, not only had he transmigrated to the Marvel Universe, but he had also somehow acquired a cheat-like system called the Devour System?

As he pondered this, a progress bar appeared in his mind.

[Revival Progress: 10%, 15%, 20%...]

Revival? It was actually happening?

This was fantastic! Being alive was all that mattered!

"Calculating based on host's current physical condition…"

"Calculation complete. Host can currently summon one creature. Available summon type: Undead Wraith."

As the system's voice continued, a flood of information surged into Johnny's mind.

This information wasn't overwhelming; rather, it was as though the knowledge had always been there, instantly understandable.

The bulk of it was an introduction to the system.

This is amazing!

That was Johnny's only thought.

The Devour System was an incredibly powerful auxiliary system that allowed the host to summon undead creatures to fight on their behalf. The number and strength of these creatures depended on the host's own power level.

The summoned creatures all shared one defining characteristic: Devour.

Through devouring, they could enhance Johnny's strength and transfer abilities from their victims to him!

In addition to their devouring ability, the Undead Wraiths possessed unique racial traits. They moved perpetually within shadows, making them nearly invisible to the naked eye. They could only be seen when they were attacking.

"Just you wait! Once I'm revived, I'll make those bastards pay for killing me!"

"If you won't play fair, don't expect me to either!"

As excitement surged through him, so did a burning fury. Johnny's heart was set on revenge.
