Chapter 27: Spider-Man Breaking into the Building
Peter successfully broke into Fisk International Financial Group's headquarters, but once inside, he wasn't quite sure what to do next.
He knew that Wilson Fisk was trying to escape, sending his men to delay the police and buy time for his getaway.
Well… I guess I should head upwards. No matter what, finding Fisk first is the top priority, Peter thought.
"Damn it! Take down that flying freak, quick!" shouted a man who appeared to be the leader of Fisk's goons, pointing at Peter perched on the overhead beam in the lobby.
Immediately, every mercenary in the building turned their guns toward Peter.
"Spider-Man's interfering! He's going to ruin our operation!" one mercenary grumbled.
"Quit complaining! At least he stopped that fuel truck from blowing up!" another pointed out.
However, it wasn't just Fisk's men who were annoyed by Peter's presence. The newly arrived NYPD special units weren't exactly thrilled about the superhero's intrusion either.
But there was no time for complaints—the mercenaries weren't giving anyone a break.
The lobby was complete chaos, with bullets flying everywhere as Fisk's men engaged the police in a fierce shootout. Peter had to remain calm and focused, knowing that even a single stray bullet could be fatal.
Despite his superhuman strength, Peter had to be careful not to unleash his full power. After all, these people were just ordinary humans, and a careless move on his part could kill someone.
Finally, after webbing up the last of the mercenaries to the wall, Peter could catch his breath.
Meanwhile, the NYPD SWAT team had gathered by the central elevator, fully equipped. However, the elevator display had suddenly gone dark, indicating someone had cut off the power.
"We'll have to take the stairs. The longer we delay, the slimmer our chances of catching Fisk," said a middle-aged officer who appeared to be the squad leader.
Peter found this remark curious. The police seemed unusually determined to capture Fisk today, something he had rarely seen before.
Wilson Fisk had a public image as a legitimate businessman and a philanthropist with great influence in New York City. Men like him usually had no trouble hiring high-priced lawyers to dodge any criminal charges.
But today, the NYPD seemed hell-bent on arresting him, to the point of risking everything. Why?
This question weighed on Peter's mind, but he had no answers. He simply didn't know why the police were so intent on catching Fisk today.
"You guys go ahead. I'll climb up the elevator shaft and check things out from above," Peter said, watching as the police rushed toward the stairwell.
Without hesitation, Peter pried open the elevator doors with his bare hands, revealing the dark, empty shaft inside.
The elevator was jammed on the fifth floor, and Peter quickly began scaling the shaft, reaching the fifth-floor vent, and crawling through the ductwork.
"Helicopters are under fire from within the building. Armed personnel on every floor," Yuri Watanabe's voice came through Peter's earpiece. Her tone was detached, as if she didn't particularly care about his well-being.
It sounded like just an obligatory report, but Peter couldn't help but smile.
"Looks like he's backed into a corner. This time, I'll catch him for sure!"
"Wait! We've just spotted them trying to wipe the company's servers!" Yuri's voice came back, this time tinged with urgency.
"If you want Fisk to rot in prison, Spider-Man, you have to stop them!"
Peter's eyes widened at the realization. If the company's server data was wiped, the evidence needed to prosecute Fisk would be lost forever.
"Got it. I'll deal with it before they erase everything," Peter responded, quickening his pace.
The building's interior was hollow, with each floor forming a ring around a central atrium. As Peter emerged from the vents, he spotted a mercenary on the upper levels armed with a rocket launcher, making his expression darken.
These lunatics are using rocket launchers inside a skyscraper? Are they not worried about bringing the whole building down?
Before Peter could think further, the mercenary above spotted the red blur of Spider-Man.
Peter swiftly fired two webs, launching himself toward the upper levels.
In less than five seconds, Peter reached the upper floors, landing directly in front of Fisk's mercenaries.
"It's Spider-Man! Kill him! Don't let him go any further!" shouted one of the gunmen.
Their commanding voices sounded tough, but the way Peter easily knocked them aside with a few punches was far more impressive.
Despite the heavy firepower on the upper floors, there weren't many men stationed there.
With the servers about to be wiped, Peter couldn't waste time engaging all the enemies. Instead, he swiftly disarmed them, sending their weapons tumbling down into the central atrium.
The police officers climbing the stairs looked up just in time to see a pile of guns and rocket launchers raining down from above.
The building was open in the center, with stairs connecting the various levels, but Peter couldn't afford to take the long way up.
Firing two more webs, he swung himself up to the tenth floor of Fisk Tower, where the central server room was located.
According to the floor map he had seen earlier, the server room was on this level, while Fisk's office was just above. But right now, preserving the server data was more important than confronting Fisk directly.
Peter reached the server room's entrance, only to find the way blocked by two massive steel doors. He could see several figures moving inside through his suit's infrared vision.
The server room was heavily guarded. If Peter charged in recklessly, the mercenaries might blow up the terminals, destroying all the evidence.
I need to find a quieter way in. Like… there. Gotcha.
Spotting another ventilation duct in the ceiling, Peter grinned beneath his mask.
Firing two webs, he silently swung up and into the ductwork, moving quickly but quietly through the tight space.
Part of his success was due to Fisk's vast wealth—he spared no expense in maintaining the building. The other part was Peter's natural agility, allowing him to move swiftly without making a sound.
The duct led straight into the server room, and as Peter peered down, he heard the mercenaries talking below.
"Can't you move any faster? The boss wants everything wiped."
"This is the fastest we can go! You just—"
Before the second man could finish, Peter webbed both of them to the ground, immobilizing them instantly.
"Watching you cluelessly standing around is pretty entertaining, but I've got work to do," Peter quipped.
The remaining mercenaries quickly noticed Spider-Man's presence and raised their guns, but Peter tore down a massive ceiling light, sending the heavy steel structure crashing onto them, knocking them out cold.
"Warning: Data erasure will complete in thirty seconds," came a voice from the server terminal.
Realizing time was running out, Peter dashed to the control panel.
"I've got to reverse the process before everything is wiped. Let's see how good your security is, Fisk," Peter muttered, his fingers flying over the keyboard.
He may have been a superhero, but Peter Parker was also a tech genius, particularly when it came to hacking.
