Chapter 75: Chapter 75: The Knight Bus
"Expelliarmus!"
"Stupefy!"
George seized the moment when the two seventh-year wizards were attacking each other, utilizing his speed advantage to sneak behind one. With his wand pressed to their back, he cast his spells and narrowly won the duel.
To be honest, if not for his superior physical reflexes, his magical prowess and dueling skills wouldn't have been enough to defeat the seventh-years. However, this battle gave him a deeper understanding of magical dueling in the world of Harry Potter, especially some advanced techniques displayed by the seventh-years, which were quite enlightening.
"George maintained order and showcased excellent dueling skills. While he still has room for improvement compared to me, he's already quite impressive. Ten points to Slytherin!"
Lockhart strode forward, wrapping an arm around George. Snape, who had been a step slower, raised an eyebrow. Yet, seeing the additional points awarded to George, he refrained from commenting and instead took center stage on the platform:
"It seems you lot are still incapable of mastering proper dueling techniques. Let's do it this way: two of you at a time will come up to the platform, and Professor Lockhart and I will guide you one-on-one before the duels continue."
"Excellent suggestion, Professor Snape. I'll guide George," Lockhart said, pointing at George.
A cold gleam flashed in Snape's eyes as he retorted: "George is too skilled to serve as a good example. I suggest Malfoy and Potter. I'll guide Malfoy, and you can guide Potter."
"That works too," Lockhart replied, considering Harry's fame to be equally valuable.
With all the other students stepping down, only Snape, Malfoy, Harry, and Lockhart remained on the stage.
Standing below, George knew exactly what was about to happen but chose not to intervene. He needed the Chamber of Secrets incident to continue gaining attention. Only under such conditions would Dumbledore be temporarily removed from the school next term, giving George an opportunity to sweep through the restricted section and study its dark magic tomes.
Currently, the restricted section was his only hope to learn spells like the Unforgivable Curses or Fiendfyre. But whenever he entered the restricted section, Dumbledore would covertly monitor him, making it too risky to explore the forbidden books on dark magic.
In many ways, George was similar to a young Voldemort. If he showed too much interest in dark magic, Dumbledore might not remain passive for long. Thus, George was particularly cautious and restrained.
As expected, during Harry and Malfoy's duel, Malfoy used the Snake Summoning Spell. In response, Harry inadvertently revealed his Parseltongue ability, inherited from Voldemort, creating a massive uproar.
Most of the school began suspecting Harry of being the Heir of Slytherin since Parseltongue was known as Slytherin's hallmark trait.
The dueling club continued to meet nightly, and George regularly trained with the seventh-years, steadily honing his dueling techniques and magical combat skills.
As Christmas approached, Hogwarts officially began its holiday break.
After bidding farewell to his professors and classmates, George packed his belongings, took his pet owl, Peggy, and boarded the Hogwarts Express.
Six months ago, when he first arrived at Hogwarts, he was just an unremarkable young wizard who barely knew the Unlocking Charm and a few beginner spells. Now, he was renowned as the Slytherin Star, undefeated in magical duels against seventh-years—even without using his superhuman abilities.
By incorporating his supernatural powers, George's strength would increase dramatically. His ability had significantly improved, allowing him to easily control objects weighing several hundred pounds.
At dusk, before the sky fully darkened, George stepped out of King's Cross Station. Unlike other young wizards who were met by their families, George, an orphan, had to return to his home in Knockturn Alley alone.
This time, he didn't inform Tonks about his holiday plans, knowing she wouldn't come to pick him up like before. Such gestures of goodwill shouldn't be wasted on minor matters; even the best relationships could grow distant if overused.
"Knight Bus!"
Standing by the roadside, George raised his wand and waved it in the air, calling out loudly.
Within less than a minute, with a deafening BANG, a bright purple triple-decker bus appeared before him.
Traveling with Peggy, a large owl, made using the subway or taking a cab inconvenient. George also hadn't yet mastered Apparition, nor could he fly openly. Hence, he chose the magical Knight Bus—a popular mode of transportation in the British wizarding world.
The Knight Bus was a magical public transport service established by the Ministry of Magic for young or physically weak wizards unable to Apparate. Inspired by Muggle buses, the Knight Bus had been magically modified for high speed and could travel to any location within Britain. It first began operating in 1865 and had since become a beloved service among wizards.
"Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for stranded witches and wizards. Stick out your wand hand, climb aboard, and we'll take you wherever you want to go. My name is Stan Shunpike, and I'll be your conductor this evening," announced a young wizard in a purple uniform as he stepped out of the bus.
George curiously examined the enchanted vehicle before boarding. "Hello, Mr. Shunpike. Please take me to the Leaky Cauldron."
"Seven Sickles. Ten if you want chocolate; eleven if you want a hot water bottle and a toothbrush—your choice of color."
Following him onto the bus, the conductor continued, "What's your name?"
"George. Here are seven Sickles," George replied, placing his luggage on one of the brass-framed beds inside.
Unlike regular buses, the Knight Bus had no seats but featured brass beds lit by enchanted candles. Passengers could sleep on the beds until they reached their destination.
"George, that name sounds familiar. You look familiar too," the conductor mused before rummaging through a box of discarded newspapers.
Pulling out an old issue, he glanced between George and the paper before exclaiming, "You're that once-in-a-millennium Quidditch prodigy, George!"
"It seems I've become somewhat famous in the wizarding world," George replied with a smile, neither affirming nor denying the statement.
Stan, evidently a Quidditch fan, became even more enthusiastic upon recognizing George, chatting eagerly as they rode along.
"Let's go, Ernie!" Stan called to the driver, and with a loud BANG, the Knight Bus sped off at an eye-watering pace, as if entering another dimension. Streetlights, mailboxes, and trash cans leapt out of the way to avoid the vehicle, returning to their places after it passed.
