Melodies of Love and Loss

Chapter 12: Chapter 12 Neither Soft Nor Hard

Jiang Yan burst into Zhou Lu's office, her face filled with anger as she accused, "Did you force Ajian to pay back the money?"

She knew that initially, Su Jian had taken money from the Zhou Family to go abroad.

Zhou Lu's brow furrowed imperceptibly. He glanced at the door, which was not properly closed, and said in a deep voice, "President Jiang, this is a hospital, not a marketplace."

Gathering her composure slightly, Jiang Yan spoke, "It's just ten million, I will pay it for her. Stop bothering Ajian from now on, don't make me lose respect for you."

She picked up her cell phone to transfer the money to Zhou Lu.

The man raised his eyebrows slightly and said deliberately, "Who said anything about ten million? President Jiang, you are a businessman yourself; do you really think there's such a cheap deal in the world? She owes me one billion, principal and interest included."

"One billion?" Jiang Yan was shocked, then scoffed, "No wonder Ajian spends twenty-four hours a day in the office, surviving on pills every day."

The fingertips holding the pen turned slightly white on Zhou Lu, though no change showed on his face.

Jiang Yan frowned, "Zhou Lu, you know Su Jian well. You should understand she is incredibly stubborn and never yields. Are you trying to drive her to her death?"

Zhou Lu fiddled with his pen nonchalantly, unperturbed, "There's one month left until the deadline. If President Jiang wishes to pay off her debt, I have no objections."

One billion is not a small amount.

Even Jiang Yan couldn't gather that much money in half a month.

"You're extorting me! We could sue you, and you wouldn't want to ruin your reputation and be unable to work as a doctor, would you?" Jiang Yan threatened.

Zhou Lu leaned back in his chair, replying solemnly, "No problem. If I can't be a doctor, I'll just go back and take over the family business. My dad would probably thank you."

Temporarily at a loss for words and seeing that he was impervious, Jiang Yan eventually left the hospital, full of pent-up frustration.

Su Jian became somewhat angry after knowing Jiang Yan had confronted Zhou Lu for her sake.

"Why offend him for me? Besides, he's dead set on targeting me; no one can persuade him otherwise."

Jiang Yan glanced at her, but ultimately couldn't help asking, "Ajian, what really happened back then that made you suddenly disappear overseas? Especially when Zhou Lu was seriously injured and desperately needed you by his side."

Zhou Lu had been in a critical car accident, and after being resuscitated, the doctors said his arm nerves were damaged. It was very likely that he could no longer wield a surgical scalpel—his lifelong dream of being a prominent thoracic surgeon. It was imaginable how desperate he was at that time.

And at that exact moment, Su Jian took the Zhou Family's money and left without a word, dealing him a double blow.

During that time, Zhou Lu had become gaunt and listless, as if he had lost all hope in life, shocking all his friends.

This memory was still vivid in Jiang Yan's mind; even she thought that what Su Jian did was despicable.

It wasn't entirely Zhou Lu's fault for treating Su Jian the way he was now.

However, Jiang Yan still believed there was more to the story; Su Jian wouldn't have left Zhou Lu to go abroad for just ten million.

Su Jian lowered her eyes, remaining silent.

She was always like this, keeping silent whenever the past was mentioned.

Jiang Yan had no way to make her talk further, so she stopped asking.

"Why not go and try to soften Zhou Lu up? Otherwise, even if you wear yourself out, you won't be able to raise a billion."

Jiang Yan always felt that Zhou Lu still had feelings for Su Jian. Wasn't his revenge a result of his hatred for her sudden departure?

Where there's love, there's hate.

Su Jian bowed her head and, tired, closed her eyes, massaging her temples, "Do you think Zhou Lu is the type to respond to softness instead of hardness?"

Jiang Yan was at a loss for words.

Zhou Lu was famously unyielding, whether to kindness or force.
