Chapter 12: Nature of Mobs

In a village, somewhere in the server, a baby villager witnesses A green, slime-body witch kill 3 villagers.

Baby-villager: You…You killed them.

Mahito: Oh, you saw me? Did you know those villagers?

Baby-villager: Y…Yes.

Mahito: Oh. Someone close to you?

Baby-villager: No. They…They used to bully me. They made fun of me. Hurt me. I wanted them to die.

Mahito: Oh so in that case I did you a favor right?

Baby-villager: You…You're a mob, right? My parents have told me about you. You kill villagers. You will kill me.

Mahito: Don't be ridiculous. That's not what we are. We only kill bad people. The bad players and the bad villagers. That's what we mobs kill.

Baby-villager: Huh?

Mahito: Your parents might tell you that my kind kills people but that's only half true. To villagers, killing is an act of evil. Hence we are evil. But we only kill those who deserve to die. I killed them because they were scum. Villagers find it extreme but it's the truth. I would never harm any innocent person.

Baby-villager: That's a lie.

Mahito: Did I harm you?

Baby-villager: …

Mahito: I didn't right? If I were a mob that kills everyone, why would I talk to you here? You do realize there are 2 types of people. The good ones, that help others, contribute to society, and live peacefully. Like your parents. You must have seen some players that are like that. Who help the villagers. But then there are the bad ones. Menaces who are better off dead. Like these 3. You would have also seen such players. Those who pillage the villages, kill villagers. Do whatever they want. Those are the people we kill. And the players obviously want you to think otherwise. They create this fake image of mobs that we want to kill everyone. But it's simply not true. You don't need to be afraid around me. I'll protect you from all the bad villagers and players. I will even kill those who trouble you.

Baby-villager: …

Mahito: Alright. You better get going. Your parents must be waiting for you. We will meet soon. Bye.

Mahito goes away and the Baby Villager goes back to his house.

Steve's Base:

Steve: Alright. I think I've trained you enough. It's time you take on missions.

Player: But wouldn't that reveal my identity?

Steve: Don't worry. These ones will be off-record. Besides you won't be going alone. The one you go with, the mission will be counted on his record.

Player: The one I will go with? It means you?

Steve: Unfortunately, I have my own work this time. But don't worry, you will be going with a friend of mine. Someone I trust.

Another player enters the room.

Steve: Meet Nanami.

Nanami: Nice to meet you, Player.

Player: Oh. Nice to meet you too.

Steve: He's a Grade 1 Pro Player. Takes his missions very seriously. He is like one of those players who just plays the game seriously, to progress quickly and become pro at it. He hardly enjoys the game.

Nanami: Don't listen to this idiot, Player. I enjoy the game a lot. Someone like him will not understand how different people enjoy games.

Steve: You don't need to be mean.

Nanami: I think we both know that's not true.

Steve: Anyways, just go on your mission.

Player: Steve, I wanted to ask. What's this grading system?

Steve: Grades are used to classify different player's level. A Grade 4 is a starting player. Grade 3 is an experienced player who isn't that strong. Grade 2 are strong players that can grow stronger, like Megumi. Semi-Grade 1 players are players below Grade 1 but above Grade 2. It's an intermediate level. Stronger than Grade 2 but still not one of the Pros. Then there is the Grade 1. The strongest Pros in the server. Capable of handling dangerous missions.

Player: Oh so you and Nanami are both Grade 1s?

Steve: Hehe. No there is another Grade for me. Special Grade. It's for special players like me. Those who are just the strongest.

Player: Woah. How many Special Grades are there?

Steve: Right now, 3. There have only been 4 till now.

Player: What Grade am I?

Steve: At the time of your registered death, You were Grade 4.

Player: Aww.

Steve Don't worry. You are much stronger now. When we reveal you in the tournament, we will have your grade changed.

Player: That's great.

Nanami: We are getting late for the mission, let's go Player.

Player: Right.

Player and Nanami arrive at the village where Mahito killed 3 villagers. They investigate the attack of an unnatural mob here.

Nanami: According to some, a strange-looking mob was behind the attack, but people also saw a villager with it.

Player: Oh?

Nanami: Player, there are mobs here. Be careful.

They notice 2 zombies approaching them.

Both Nanami and Player kill them easily.

More zombies attack them from behind. Nanami kills some of them but as Player is about to attack them he hesitates.

Player: Nanami, why do these zombies look like villagers?

Namami looks at the zombies and realizes.

Nanami: Player. They are not zombies. They are zombified villagers.

Player: What?

Player is shocked to hear this.

Nanami: Sometimes when a zombie kills a villager, they turn them into zombies as well. They are different than normal zombies. The zombies we are fighting right now, all of them, are villagers.

Player hesitates and is unable to fight them. He is about to be attacked by them when Nanami kills them.

Nanami: Why didn't you kill them?

Player: I can't attack them. They are villagers. Arent we supposed to save villagers,

Nanami: They aren't villagers anymore. They died the moment they were turned into zombies. You don't need to worry.

Player: But that still doesn't mean we didn't fight villagers. Their death still…hits me.

Nanami: It's possible that the mob that killed the villagers was responsible for this. Steve told me you met 2 strange mobs. It's possible it was the work of a similar mob. We need to be careful. Let's quickly find them and kill them.

Player: Yeah.

Jujutsu Pros HQ:

Nanami: We studied similar recent attacks on different villages where zombified villagers were found in large amounts. We have concluded that the same Mob is behind this. Based on the pattern, I have some idea of where the mob might be hiding. I will go to investigate that. You, Player, should investigate those villages to find out anything useful.

Player: Ok. Be careful Nanami.

Nanami: …You too Player.

Player goes to the different villages and asks them what they knew about the incident. He manages to learn little but all of them said that they saw a baby villager on the scene and that Zombiefied villagers were found nearby afterwards.

Meanwhile, Nanami goes to the expected hiding place of the mob which is inside an underground cave. He finds the place surrounded by many Zombified Villagers.

Nanami: Looks like I might be right.

He easily kills them all.

Mahito: Wow. You killed all of them without any remorse? You know they were villagers once?

Nanami: (It's a witch, but it's green. It looks like its body is made of slime. So it is like one of those mobs Steve fought.) You didn't feel any remorse turning them into zombies?

Mahito: Of course not. To me, it felt like the natural form of them.

Nanami: (It's a witch. It uses potion effects to turn villagers into zombies?)

Mahito: It's good Steve didn't come here. But I hope you're not weak.

Nanami: Let's just get it over with. I have been playing for almost 4 hours now. I need to log off after 4. Only 5 minutes are left.

Nanami takes out his sword. Mahito takes out a potion. Nanami rushes at Mahito, swinging his sword and Mahito dodges his attacks while throwing potions at him, which Nanami dodges and deflects with his sword.

Nanami: (It's like I'm fighting a player. It's exactly how Steve described them. These are glitched mobs. Though how did they get created? If they become as strong as Herobrine, this world will be doomed.)

As Player investigates another village, he notices a baby villager following 2 villagers into a corner. He follows him and finds the baby villager holding a sword. He is about to attack the 2 villagers but Player stops him. He grabs him and takes him inside a building.

Player: Hey. What do you think you are doing?

Baby-villager: Hey, let me go. I have to kill them.

Player: What? But why?

Baby-villager: They deserve to die. They are scum that stole emeralds from nearby villages. They need to be punished.

Player: Hey calm down. That's not for you to decide. Adult Villagers handle that stuff. You are still a kid.

Baby-villager: I can make decisions on my own. Those villagers deserved to die.

Players: You have extreme thoughts. (Wait, could he be the baby villager the villagers talked about? Could he by chance be related to the mob in some way?). Why were you visiting different villages on your own?

Baby-villager: Uhm…(He is a player. He might not understand me.) I was just visiting them. Nothing else.

Player: You know those villages got attacked by a mob right? A dangerous mob. He killed so many innocent villagers.

Baby-villager: They weren't innocent.

Player: Huh?

Baby-villager: …They…weren't innocent. I know, because…I was following them. I heard about a mob attacking different villages and killing villagers so I followed him. But he didn't kill anyone innocent there. The villagers he killed were bad men like them. He only killed them. So I decided I should kill such men too.

Player: That was dangerous of you. You could have gotten hurt. What if the mob attacked you? What if you got lost? You're just a kid.

Baby-villager: (He is a good player. He cares about me. About villagers.) Don't worry. I can handle myself. I am not like other villagers.

Player: Yeah. I know you're different. Now let's get you home.

Nanami and Mahito continue fighting as Mahito throws potions at him and Nanami dodges them all. Eventually, he is able to get close to Mahito and lands a strike at him.

Mahito: You are a strong player. If I fought you, I'd eventually keep getting hit and will die. But that is if I couldn't do this.

He takes out a potion of healing and heals himself.

Mahito: I have an endless supply of potions. I can heal any damage done to me. You however. I need to land one potion hit and you will get effects like hunger, Poison, Wither, etc.

Nanami: That means I just have to attack you fast enough to stop you from heal yourself.

Suddenly Mahito rushes towards Nanami and hits him with a potion of poison.

Nanami jumps behind but it's too late.

Mahito: Surprised by my speed? I used a potion of speed. I can give myself effects without actually drinking potions. So you will find it difficult to kill me. I can heal instantly.

Nanami takes out milk, and drinks it, neutralizing the poison.

Mahito: Oh. Milk. Perfect counter for potion effects. But just how many buckets of milk do you have with yourself?

He throws multiple potions at Nanami, who dodges them all and starts running away. Mahito chases him with increased speed, throwing potions at him, which Nanami barely dodges. He ends up running at a dead end.

Mahito: No where to run? What will you do now?

Nanami notices his play time is up, which makes him angry.

Nanami: My play time is up. You made me play extra time, leaving me less time for other work. I'll end you quickly now.
