Monsoon Romance

Chapter 20: Aiko’s Wish (20)

The moon hung high in the sky, casting a soft silver glow over the quiet town below. The night was calm, with the only sounds being the occasional rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze and the distant hum of crickets. Haruto and Aiko sat side by side on the rooftop of Haruto's house, their legs dangling over the edge as they gazed up at the stars. It was a tradition they had started years ago—a quiet, peaceful moment to themselves, away from the world's noise.

Tonight, the air was particularly cool, and Aiko had pulled her jacket tightly around her shoulders. Haruto, always the warmer of the two, noticed and offered her his scarf, which she gladly accepted with a grateful smile.

"You always think of me, don't you?" Aiko teased, wrapping the scarf around her neck.

Haruto shrugged, his lips curving into a faint smile. "You're always cold. I just want to make sure you're comfortable."

Aiko rolled her eyes playfully but said nothing more, her gaze returning to the stars above. It was one of those rare nights where the sky was clear, and every star seemed to shine with a brilliance of its own. They could see constellations stretching across the heavens, twinkling as if in quiet conversation with the earth below.

Aiko sat quietly for a while, her hands resting in her lap as she contemplated something in her mind. It was the kind of moment when the world felt still, allowing one to think deeply and reflect. Haruto noticed the way her eyes flickered with thought, the slight furrow in her brow that suggested she was wrestling with something important.

"What's on your mind?" Haruto asked, his voice gentle but curious.

Aiko hesitated for a moment, her fingers brushing the edge of the roof. Finally, she turned to face him, her expression softer than usual. "I've been thinking about something for a while now."

Haruto shifted slightly to face her, sensing that this was more than just a passing thought. He waited for her to continue, knowing that Aiko often carried her burdens quietly, only sharing them when she felt it was right.

"I don't know if you believe in wishes," Aiko began, her voice low, "but there's something I've always wished for."

Haruto raised an eyebrow. "A wish? Like a birthday wish or something?"

Aiko smiled faintly. "Not exactly. It's more like something I've always hoped for. Something I've dreamed about for a long time."

She fell silent, her eyes returning to the stars as she spoke again, her words barely more than a whisper. "I've always wanted to find a way to make sure the people I care about are happy. I want to see them smile, to know that they're living the life they want. And for me… I've always wanted to be someone who brings joy to others, who makes a difference in the world."

Haruto listened intently, his gaze never leaving her face. He could hear the sincerity in her words, the quiet vulnerability that she often kept hidden behind her laughter and her bright smile. Aiko had always been the kind of person who put others first, who cared deeply about the happiness of those around her. But hearing her express this wish so openly made Haruto realize just how much weight it carried for her.

"I think that's a beautiful wish," he said quietly, reaching out and placing his hand gently on hers. "You already make a difference in so many people's lives, Aiko. You've made a difference in mine."

Aiko blinked, surprised by his words. She turned to him, her eyes wide. "You think so?"

Haruto nodded, his voice steady. "Of course. You always know how to brighten a room, how to make even the darkest days feel a little lighter. That's a gift, Aiko."

Aiko's cheeks flushed a little at his praise, and she looked down at their hands, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. Haruto's words had touched her deeply, more than she realized. She had always tried to be the person who lifted others up, but it was moments like this, when someone acknowledged her efforts, that made her feel truly seen.

"I just…" Aiko trailed off, searching for the right words. "I just want to make sure that everyone I love is happy, and that they know how much I care. It's hard, sometimes, because I don't always know if I'm doing enough."

Haruto squeezed her hand gently, offering her a reassuring smile. "You're doing more than enough, Aiko. Just by being yourself. You're always there when I need you, and I know I'm not the only one who feels that way."

Aiko blinked, a soft smile tugging at her lips. "You really think so?"

Haruto chuckled, his thumb brushing over her hand in a comforting gesture. "I know so."

Aiko remained silent for a moment, the weight of his words sinking in. As she looked up at the sky again, she thought about her wish—the one that had been with her for so long. She had always dreamed of being someone who could make the world a better place, who could help the people she loved to find happiness. But hearing Haruto's words made her realize that she was already on the right path. It wasn't about grand gestures or lofty dreams. It was about the small, everyday things—being there for someone when they needed you, offering a kind word, and making a difference in the lives of those closest to you.

"I guess my wish is already coming true, isn't it?" Aiko murmured softly, more to herself than to Haruto.

Haruto looked at her with a knowing smile. "I think it is."

The two of them sat in silence for a while, simply enjoying each other's company as the stars above continued to shine brightly. Aiko's wish was simple, yet profound, and in that quiet moment, under the vast, endless sky, she realized that sometimes the greatest gift we can give is our love, our presence, and the genuine care we offer to those around us.

And as the night deepened, Aiko knew that no matter what the future held, her wish would always be to make the world a better place—one small, meaningful moment at a time. And with Haruto by her side, she was certain that, together, they would make it happen.
