Chapter 23: New Year’s Wish (23)
The streets of the town sparkled with festivity, every lamp post adorned with garlands of twinkling lights and streamers. The air was filled with the mingling scents of roasted chestnuts, warm pastries, and the crisp chill of a winter's night. It was New Year's Eve, a night that carried the weight of reflection, hope, and celebration. Haruto and Aiko had planned to spend the evening at the town's New Year festival, an annual tradition that neither had ever missed since they became friends.
Haruto arrived at the meeting spot under the large clock tower, his breath forming misty clouds in the cold night air. He adjusted the scarf around his neck, feeling a flutter of excitement. He was carrying a small wrapped gift in his pocket, unsure if it was the right moment to give it to Aiko, but the thought of seeing her reaction made his nerves buzz.
"Haruto!"
Her voice rang out, bright and cheerful, cutting through the chatter of the crowd. He turned to see her approaching, her cheeks pink from the cold, her eyes sparkling as brightly as the festive lights around them. She wore a soft woolen coat and a knit beanie, her usual casual charm heightened by the festive atmosphere.
"You're just in time," she said with a grin. "The fireworks won't start for another hour, so we have time to explore!"
Haruto nodded, smiling back. "Lead the way."
The two wandered through the festival together, weaving through the throngs of people. Stalls lined the streets, offering everything from colorful trinkets to delicious snacks. Aiko tugged Haruto toward one of the game booths, her eyes lighting up at the sight of a ring toss.
"I bet I can win that stuffed rabbit," she said confidently, pointing to a plush toy hanging on the prize rack.
Haruto chuckled. "Go for it."
Aiko handed over her coins and took the rings from the booth attendant. Her first toss missed, and her second hit the edge of a peg, wobbling before falling off. Determined, she adjusted her stance and threw her final ring. It sailed through the air and landed perfectly around the peg.
"Yes!" Aiko exclaimed, jumping up and down in triumph. She accepted the stuffed rabbit and turned to Haruto, holding it out to him. "Here. For you."
Haruto blinked in surprise. "But you won it. Shouldn't you keep it?"
Aiko shook her head, smiling. "Consider it my New Year's gift to you. Besides, it'll be fun to see it sitting on your desk."
Haruto took the rabbit, a smile spreading across his face. "Thanks, Aiko."
As the evening wore on, they visited more stalls, laughing and chatting as they tried their luck at different games and sampled various festival treats. The warmth of their companionship seemed to make the winter night less cold, and Haruto found himself wishing that moments like these could last forever.
Finally, as midnight approached, the two made their way to the large open plaza where the crowd had gathered to watch the fireworks. The clock tower loomed above them, its hands ticking closer to the new year. Aiko pulled Haruto to a spot near the center, where they had a clear view of the sky.
"Do you have a New Year's wish?" she asked suddenly, her voice quieter now as the excitement around them began to still.
Haruto hesitated, looking at her profile. The glow of the lights reflected in her eyes, and there was a softness to her expression that made his chest tighten. He did have a wish, but it was one he wasn't sure he could say out loud.
"I… I don't know yet," he said, his voice barely audible over the murmur of the crowd. "What about you?"
Aiko smiled, turning her gaze toward the sky. "I always wish for the same thing—to have more days like this. Days where everything feels… perfect."
Haruto felt his heart skip a beat. He opened his mouth to say something, but the crowd's countdown to midnight began, and the moment slipped away.
"Ten… nine… eight…"
The excitement in the plaza built with each number, everyone's voices joining in unison. Haruto glanced at Aiko, who was looking up at the sky with a hopeful smile.
"Three… two… one! Happy New Year!"
The first firework shot into the sky, exploding in a burst of brilliant colors. The crowd cheered, their voices mingling with the echoing booms of the fireworks. Haruto watched as Aiko tilted her head back, her face illuminated by the cascading lights. She looked so happy, so radiant, that Haruto found himself wishing he could freeze the moment forever.
"Aiko," he said softly, his voice almost lost in the noise.
She turned to him, her eyes wide with curiosity.
Haruto hesitated, then reached into his pocket and pulled out the small wrapped gift. "Here. I wanted to give you this."
Aiko blinked in surprise, then took the gift, her smile returning. "What is it?"
"Open it and see."
She carefully unwrapped the paper, revealing a small charm bracelet with a delicate cherry blossom charm. Her breath hitched, and she looked up at him, her eyes shining.
"It reminded me of our tree," Haruto said, scratching the back of his neck nervously.
Aiko smiled, slipping the bracelet onto her wrist. "It's perfect. Thank you, Haruto."
As the fireworks continued to light up the sky, Aiko leaned her head against Haruto's shoulder, and for that brief, magical moment, everything felt just right. Haruto silently made his New Year's wish—to always be by Aiko's side, sharing moments like this.
