Moonbound: The Outcast’s Awakening

Chapter 7: Chapter Seven: The Bloodfang’s Shadow

The air in the cavern was heavy with tension. Aria paced near the lantern, her mind racing with thoughts of Theron and his ominous threat. The name Bloodfang churned in her stomach like a bad memory she couldn't shake.

Kael crouched by the wall, sharpening his dagger with slow, deliberate strokes. His silence was unnerving, his face a mask of calm that did nothing to ease Aria's anxiety.

"What now?" she finally asked, breaking the stillness.

Kael didn't look up. "We prepare."

"For what? Another ambush? A war?"

Kael paused, his green eyes flicking to her. "For everything."

---

They spent the next few days reinforcing the mine. Kael led Aria through the tunnels, showing her hidden passageways and collapsed shafts they could use to their advantage if they were attacked. He explained how to listen for changes in the air currents and the echoes of footsteps—a trick that had saved his life more times than he could count.

Aria absorbed everything he said, but the growing weight of her new reality made it difficult to focus. The Bloodfang Pack was out there, hunting her, and Theron's promise hung over her like a storm cloud.

"You're distracted," Kael said one morning as they practiced with their weapons.

"I'm fine," Aria lied, lunging forward with her staff.

Kael sidestepped easily, grabbing the staff and yanking it from her hands. He tossed it to the ground and crossed his arms. "No, you're not."

Aria glared at him, her frustration bubbling over. "What do you want me to say, Kael? That I'm scared? That I don't know how to fight a pack like Bloodfang? Because I don't!"

Kael's expression softened, but only slightly. "Good. Fear keeps you alive. But if you let it control you, you'll lose before the fight even starts."

Aria clenched her fists, her chest tightening. "What if I can't do this?" she whispered.

Kael stepped closer, his voice low but firm. "You can. And you will. But only if you stop doubting yourself."

She swallowed hard, his words sinking in.

---

That night, Aria couldn't sleep. She sat by the small fire they had built in one of the larger chambers, staring into the flames. The heat in her chest felt stronger than usual, pulsing in time with the faint hum she had begun to notice in the air.

She closed her eyes and focused on the hum, letting it wash over her. It was soothing, like a distant melody she couldn't quite place.

The longer she listened, the more it seemed to grow, wrapping around her like a warm embrace. The heat in her chest flared, and she felt a strange pull, as if something beyond the cavern walls was calling to her.

"Aria."

Her eyes snapped open, and she found Kael standing over her, his expression unreadable.

"You felt it, didn't you?" he asked.

She nodded slowly. "It's like… a song. But I don't understand it."

Kael crouched beside her, his green eyes intense. "The Moonbound are connected to the moon in ways no one else is. That song you're hearing? It's the moon's voice, guiding you."

"Guiding me where?"

Kael hesitated. "To answers. Or to danger. It's up to you to decide which."

Aria frowned, the weight of his words pressing down on her. "How do I follow it?"

Kael placed a hand on her shoulder. "Not yet. You're not ready. But soon, the moon will call you louder, and when it does, you'll have to make a choice."

---

They didn't have to wait long for the next attack.

It came two days later, just as Aria was beginning to feel more confident in her training. She and Kael were sparring in the main chamber when a deafening roar echoed through the mine.

Kael's head snapped up, his expression sharp. "They're here."

Aria grabbed her staff, her pulse quickening. "Bloodfang?"

Kael nodded grimly, pulling his dagger from his belt. "Stay close and don't do anything reckless."

They moved toward the entrance, the roar growing louder. Shadows danced along the walls as the lantern light flickered, and the air grew heavy with the scent of wolves.

The first attacker burst through the tunnel—a massive, gray-furred rogue with glowing red eyes. Kael moved like lightning, his dagger flashing as he struck the wolf's throat. The creature collapsed with a wet thud, but more were already pouring in behind it.

Aria raised her staff, her heart pounding. One of the rogues lunged at her, its claws swiping through the air. She ducked and swung the staff, striking it across the snout. The wolf yelped but didn't back down, its glowing eyes burning with rage.

The heat in her chest surged, and before she could stop herself, the light burst from her hands. The rogue was thrown backward, its body slamming into the wall.

Kael glanced at her, his expression unreadable. "Good. Now keep moving!"

They fought their way through the tunnels, the sound of growls and snarls echoing around them. The rogues were relentless, their attacks coordinated and precise.

"These aren't normal rogues," Kael muttered, his breathing labored.

Aria swung her staff at another wolf, her arms shaking from the effort. "What do you mean?"

"They're trained," Kael said, slashing at a wolf's flank. "This is Bloodfang's work."

Her stomach twisted. Theron hadn't come himself, but his influence was clear. The rogues were a message—a warning of what was to come.

---

They reached a narrow tunnel that opened into a smaller chamber, the walls lined with jagged rocks. Kael shoved Aria inside and turned to block the entrance, his dagger dripping with blood.

"We can't hold them off forever," he said, his voice strained.

Aria looked around, her chest tightening. The song she had heard before was louder now, reverberating through her very bones. The heat in her chest burned brighter, and she knew she couldn't ignore it any longer.

"Kael," she said, her voice trembling.

He glanced at her, his green eyes widening as he saw the silver glow radiating from her hands.

"Aria, don't—"

But it was too late.

The light exploded from her, flooding the chamber with a blinding brilliance. The rogues howled in pain, their glowing eyes dimming as they fled into the darkness.

When the light faded, the mine was silent.

Kael lowered his dagger, his expression a mixture of awe and concern. "What was that?"

Aria collapsed to her knees, her breathing ragged. "I… I don't know. It just happened."

Kael crouched beside her, his hand resting on her shoulder. "You saved us. But that kind of power—it's going to draw even more attention. Theron won't stop now."

Aria nodded weakly, her resolve hardening. She had barely scratched the surface of her abilities, but she couldn't afford to wait. If Theron and the Bloodfang Pack were coming for her, she needed to be ready.

"We have to keep going," she said, her voice steady despite her exhaustion.

Kael helped her to her feet, his expression serious. "Then let's make sure you survive what's coming next."
