Chapter 12: first meeting & Introduction
Mikoto observed from a distance as Kakashi entered the training ground. Finding no one around, he immediately began his practice, each movement deliberate and precise.
"No time wasted," she noted approvingly, watching him as he moved through his exercises. Such accuracy was rare even among chūnin, let alone a genin. There was no doubt—Kakashi possessed exceptional talent.
Her other students arrived shortly after, and she noticed Kakashi's gaze flick briefly toward them, observing with quiet intensity. They hadn't formally met yet, and she suspected that the team introduction wouldn't be smooth. Kakashi wasn't just a new face; he was the one filling the gap left by their fallen comrade, a wound still fresh, especially given his youth.
"Let's test him," she decided, a subtle smile playing on her lips.
Casually, she threw a kunai in his direction, watching for his reaction. Kakashi responded instantly, countering her kunai with one of his own, deflecting it mid-air. Impressed, she threw two more from different angles. He moved quickly, countering both with a sharp precision that was becoming his signature.
His senses are sharp, she observed, though still raw and unpolished.
Without hesitation, she cast a genjutsu, forming the seals in a split second. The moment Kakashi turned to throw another kunai, he was already caught within her illusion.
She landed softly in front of him, noting the faint sheen of sweat on his brow. Let's see how well he handles this. The genjutsu was straightforward yet layered, complex enough that even most chūnin would struggle to break free. She'd left subtle clues—small cracks in the illusion—testing his ability not only to sense the jutsu but to find its weak points.
Her two other students approached, greeting Mikoto with quiet respect. Sadness still lingered in their expressions; it had only been two weeks since they lost a teammate, and they were still adjusting to the absence.
They noticed Kakashi's tense posture and recognized the familiar stance—they themselves had once been caught in Mikoto's genjutsu and knew the unsettling feeling.
Kazuki Shimura looked curiously at Mikoto, tilting her head slightly as she asked, "Sensei, who's he?" Her tone was filled with open curiosity. She'd never seen Kakashi before; though there were whispers about a young prodigy, few details had reached her or the others outside the academy.
Mikoto didn't answer immediately, her gaze shifting to Yasu, who seemed to recognize the boy. Taking the hint, Yasu spoke up, his tone thoughtful. He'd seen Kakashi around the academy when picking up his younger brother.
"He's Hatake Kakashi," Yasu explained quietly to Kazuki.
Kazuki turned to Yasu, surprised. "You know him?"
"He just started at the academy this year," Yasu replied, glancing back at Kakashi. "They say he's... well, already impressive for his age."
Yasu was also aware that Kakashi was the son of the legendary White Fang, but he kept that information to himself. Still, he couldn't help but wonder why Kakashi was here with them instead of in his own class.
Mikoto's voice broke through their thoughts, calm yet firm. "He's your new teammate."
The shock of her statement hung in the air; they struggled to comprehend what she meant. Their new teammate was a mere five-year-old child.
Before they could reconfirm what they had heard, they noticed Kakashi was already breaking free from the genjutsu.
"He's breaking Sensei's genjutsu!" the girl exclaimed in shock. When they joined her team a year ago, they hadn't even realized they were under her genjutsu.
As Kakashi finally regained his senses, Yasu remarked, "So what? I can do it too," though he still felt a sense of shock. As a member of the Inuzuka clan, his senses were among the best—at least the best of the three, though one of their teammates had died. Yet even he had been unable to detect when he had been under Mikoto's genjutsu a year ago.
"But he's younger than you," Kazuki teased, enjoying Yasu's reaction and fully aware of how difficult it was for him to accept that a child could achieve what he struggled with.
"That's what I'm talking about," Yasu said, not falling for it. Instead, he turned to Mikoto "Sensei, isn't he too young to join us?"
As he questioned her kazuki and Kakashi too look at mikoto.
"We'll find that out during the mission," Mikoto replied. Though her expression remained neutral, she was inwardly shocked; within just two minutes, he had managed to break free from the genjutsu. He truly is a prodigy.
Changing topic she said ," let's have a quick introduction" .
This brought to mind their fallen teammate, Riki, the civilian member of their team.
However, they both controlled their emotions, refusing to let the memories affect them any longer specially now seeing Kakashi . While others might easily dismiss Kakashi's abilities, both of them understood the truth; having experienced the test themselves, they knew that Kakashi was anything but ordinary. That's why they didn't continue to protest—at least for now without checking his mastery in other fields.
Kazuki decided to set an example for Kakashi, stepping forward first. "I'll go first. My name is Kazuki Shimura. I enjoy eating sweet things and practicing kenjutsu. I dislike sour taste and being underestimated. I'm proficient with Wind Style and swordsmanship. I want to become strong like Tsunade-sama and famous like her."
Kakashi raised an eyebrow. "A member of Danzo's clan," he thought. While they weren't prominent in the original story, they were often referenced in various fanfictions. Hearing the last part, Kakashi inwardly mused, "Does she know her clan leader hates Tsunade?"
Next, Yasu spoke. "I am Yasu Inuzuka. I enjoy spending time with my ninken, although they're recovering right now. I'm skilled in taijutsu and Earth Style. I want to become strong enough to protect my brother."
Mikoto narrowed her eyes. "So he changed his goal; last time it was to travel the world with his dogs."
She shifted her gaze to Kakashi, signaling that it was his turn.
"I'm Kakashi Hatake. As for what I like and dislike... I don't feel like sharing all that. My dreams for the future? Never really thought about it. As for my hobbies... I have plenty." Kakashi chose to stick with his original lines. After all, it wasn't wrong to repeat himself, right? Still, he found it enjoyable to give his introduction this way—it felt cool.
His introduction prompted the others to narrow their eyes, each with a single thought: "You didn't tell us anything." Despite this, Mikoto was impressed by how he managed to provide no information about himself at all.
Finally, it was her turn. "My name is Mikoto Uchiha. I enjoy improving myself and am skilled in Fire Style and genjutsu. I dislike failure. That's it for me."
