Chapter 28: An Unseen Threat 2

Mikoto's POV

I dodged his jutsu again, each movement fluid and precise. My eyes flicked briefly to the scratched headband on his forehead a rogue from the Hidden Cloud Village. At first glance, that's all he appeared to be. But four rogue Jōnin and three Chūnin infiltrating a foreign nation and attacking its shinobi simultaneously? This isn't random. It's calculated.

Yasu is holding his own, his stance firm despite the pressure. Kazuki is still managing, but her chakra reserves are depleting fast. If this keeps up, she won't last much longer.

They're both close to Chūnin level, but they're not quite there yet.

It's only a matter of time before they fall.

And Kakashi... He's holding his ground for now, but I can already tell he will reach the limit soon.

In a fight, the level of the opponent makes all the difference. Last time, Kakashi's enemy underestimated him, giving him an opening. But this time? His opponent isn't making the same mistake. They're fighting him at full strength.

I can't let this continue. If I don't step in soon, the tide will turn against us.

I focus, activating my Sharingan.

The shinobi in front of me is near elite Jōnin level. Strong but not beyond my ability.

I need to finish this quickly. Before anyone else gets hurt.

Kakashi pov

Hm, I can handle him, I thought, effortlessly dodging another slash from his kunai.

His psyche might be stronger than mine, but when it comes to skill? That's where I dominate.

Forget jutsu. The decades of experience I've inherited from the template aren't just for show especially now that my chakra reserves have grown significantly.

Chakra... It's the combination of spirit and physique. The first has increased due to the accumulated experience from the template, while the second is slowly adapting to match it.

Yes, adapting is the right word. My body isn't changing instantly, but it is changing gradually reshaping itself to maximize compatibility with the template. Even my height has increased by an inch.

But back to the matter at hand, yes, I can defeat him.

But I won't.

Why?

Because defeating him would draw unwanted attention.

At the age of six, defeating a Genin is already enough to raise eyebrows. I don't need to do anything more to stand out. The last thing I want is for Danzo to snatch me up, and slap a cursed seal on my tongue.

Not to mention the numerous bounties that would surface outside the village.

No, staying under the radar is smarter. Let others bask in the spotlight. I'll bide my time and deal with things my way.

I'll wait for Mikoto.

And if the situation spirals out of control... I have a trump card.

No, I didn't get a template this time, as I guessed not always I will get templates but I did gain an ability Evil Eye.

Not the Uchiha's Sharingan.

But the Evil Eye of Ban Mido.

Yes, the character from GetBackers.

It's criminally underrated. Many don't even know who Ban Mido is. What a sin they're committing.

If only I had his full template, I wouldn't have to worry about anything. But no point dreaming about what I don't have.

Still, the abilities are as good as I remember three uses of illusion, dimension travel, and memory searching.

The rules are strict, only one illusion can be cast on the same person in a day.

Of course, these abilities consume chakra. A lot of it. Casting a single illusion drains nearly half my reserves.

Once I reach Jōnin-level reserves, I'll be able to cast three times in a day without exhausting myself. But even then, I won't push beyond that. Overuse might come with consequences.

As for dimension travel… I haven't dared to test it yet. Who knows what's waiting on the other side? Even probing it could draw unwanted attention.

Not much is known about dimensions in the Naruto world. There's Obito's Kamui, Kaguya's portals, and that classmate of Boruto whose name escapes me...

Even the Pure Land, the supposed final destination of souls, remains a mystery.

So, no experimenting for now. It's too risky.

Though, I did use the last ability on a child who will be entering the academy next year.

An orphan.

I was able to see his memories how he's been bullied by others, how no one helped him, not even the elders.

Survival of the fittest is the law here.

Many think that the life of a shinobi begins after graduation, but they're wrong.

It starts much earlier before even entering the academy. For those born to shinobi parents, it's a constant fight for survival.

Few understand that.

Every action one takes whether it's helping or bullying reveals their psychological side.

Their future is decided long before they even realize it.

Take Minato, for example. Did he get Jiraiya as his teacher solely because of his talent?

The answer is no.

It was his mentality. After all, no one could have predicted he'd master the Flying Raijin or create techniques like the Rasengan.

Yet, he ended up with a Sannin as his mentor, an ex-princess as his girlfriend, and became the youngest Hokage in history.

Yes, he worked hard. There's no denying that.

But none of it happened without strings being pulled from the shadows.

Hmm, Mikoto's finally gone on the offensive.

Looks like the end is near. I should start preparing. Decreasing my reaction time.

Oh. She got injured.

My eyes narrowed as I caught the sight of blood blooming across her chest.

The opponent was going for neck but missed.

Exchange a injury for a life, nice trade.

The opponent had aimed for her neck but missed.

A calculated risk. She exchanged an injury for a decisive strike.

A life for a wound.

A fair trade.
