Chapter 7: the discussion
Once again, the entire room was enveloped in the smoke Sarutobi exhaled. This was the third time it had happened today. Hiruzen sat behind his desk, the haze of smoke swirling around him as he contemplated Kakashi's request to graduate early. He had received word from Mirayi that Kakashi was eager to advance, but Hiruzen remained silent, lost in thought.
Hiruzen knew Kakashi was at the genin level; ANBU reports had confirmed his exceptional skills. Kakashi's potential was evident, but there was a significant issue: his age. Despite his readiness for missions, he had only been in the academy for half a year. Hiruzen weighed the pros and cons of granting such a request, considering the potential consequences.
He turned his gaze to Mirayi, who was waiting attentively in the office. "Tell me, Mirayi," Hiruzen began, "what do you think I should do about Kakashi's request?"
Mirayi, aware that his response might be scrutinized, chose his words carefully. "Kakashi's skills are undoubtedly at the genin level," he said. "However, he is still quite young. If Hokage-sama believes he deserves this opportunity, it might be worth considering."
Mirayi's response acknowledged Kakashi's abilities while subtly highlighting the risk of advancing him too soon. Ultimately, the decision rested with Hiruzen. Though they shared the same clan, their roles were vastly different—one was the Hokage and leader, while the other was merely a member of the clan.
Hiruzen nodded thoughtfully. "Very well," he said. "Thank you for your input. You may leave now."
Mirayi bowed respectfully and exited the office. Hiruzen took another drag from his cigarette, the smoke curling up toward the ceiling. "Call the elders," he instructed the ANBU operative waiting by the door.
Moments later, Hiruzen observed as the ANBU operative flashed past the window, heading out to summon the elders. Within a few minutes, Koharu and Homura arrived, looking slightly out of breath from their hasty return.
Koharu took her seat with a hint of exasperation. "Hiruzen," she said, "what's the urgency? We just left and you've called us back. What's going on?"
Homura, following suit, glanced at Hiruzen with a questioning look. "We were in the middle of discussing the logistics and strategies for the border. What's so important that it couldn't wait?"
Hiruzen leaned back in his chair, his expression serious. "Sunagakure and Kirigakure have begun making their moves. Meanwhile, Iwagakure and Kumogakure have started testing each other. The delicate balance maintained after the Second War is starting to crumble."
Koharu's eyes widened in concern. "Are things really deteriorating that quickly?"
"Yes," Hiruzen confirmed. "We need to address this immediately. But before we proceed, we must wait for Danzo."
The door swung open abruptly, and Danzo stormed in, his frustration palpable. "Hiruzen, must you call for us every time you need to make a decision?" he demanded, his voice laden with irritation.
If anyone had been watching, they might have thought Danzo was the one in charge, with Hiruzen as his subordinate. Danzo's face was a mask of annoyance; he had been itching to join the war efforts, but Hiruzen had consistently blocked his attempts to head to the border.
Danzo glared at Hiruzen, his frustration evident. He thought, I could be at the front lines, making a difference, but instead, I'm called here for every little decision. It's as if you're trying to undermine my authority.
Hiruzen's gaze remained steady. "Danzo," he said calmly, "I also called you all because Jiraiya just sent a message that Onoki is making a move."
Danzo's anger didn't subside, but he remained silent, waiting for the meeting to proceed. The room was thick with tension as they prepared to tackle the brewing crisis together
They started discussing again. As the matter came to end Hiruzen then addressed the next issue. "Okay, that's enough for now. There's another matter: Kakashi has applied for early graduation."
The room fell silent as everyone looked at Hiruzen. Seeing his expression, they understood he had already made his decision; he was simply informing them.
Danzo spoke up decisively. "Reject him. He still needs to learn many things ".
Allowing him to graduate early will only prove he's a genius, and becoming part of hiruzen group.
Koharu nodded in agreement. "Yes, Hiruzen, there's no need for an early graduation."
Hiruzen didn't respond immediately. It was clear they were trying to prevent the rise of another prodigy in the ranks. Although they were elders, each one was interested in maintaining their own political power.
Hiruzen turned to Homura. "What are your thoughts?"
Homura said, "The war has already started. It's better for him to learn things early, even if it's outside the academy."
Homura's response indicated he knew Hiruzen's decision was already made.
Hiruzen took a deep breath and said, "Alright, Hatake Kakashi can graduate early."
Danzo's eyes widened. "Hiruzen, this is wrong. People will think it's favoritism."
Hiruzen replied firmly, "Just tell them he's a genius."
As Koharu and Homura began to leave, Danzo added, "You'll regret this."
Hiruzen slammed his hand on the table and said, "Danzo, I am the Hokage."
The statement left Danzo speechless. He exited the room with a loud bang of the door.
