Chapter 64: Empty shell
[Brothers, I think I've cooked badly, forgive me, but don't worry! Please keep letting me cook!!]
Another three days passed, everyone in the group except Paul returned to the labyrinth to recover more treasures, now that the guardian had been defeated the amount of monsters in the place decreased considerably, so in less than six hours we entered and left the place, in addition we took the liberty of starting to destroy the magic trap circles to facilitate our passage.
I concentrated on the Hydra scales and the crystals that contained Zenith, I knew that these things could be worth hundreds of gold coins if they were worth it well, I was never someone who went after money, but if it was put in front of you I would not hesitate to take it.
Roxy as always stayed glued to me always trying to start a conversation with me, until now she has told me her story and we stopped until she reached Roa.
Zenith hasn't woken up, which has worried Paul and Lilia, but if he wakes up it wouldn't make much of a difference
I'm now having breakfast at the inn after having returned from the labyrinth for the third time in a row.
"This is already worrying me too much, Elinalise, do you know if the person you know was unconscious for so long?" Paul asked unsurely while having breakfast with us.
"...I'm not sure, she was trapped there for five years...maybe she'll never wake up" Elinalise murmured.
"I see..." Paul said with resignation.
And yes, the aura of joy from the first day of the rescue has now turned to worry when seeing that Zenith doesn't deign to wake up.
While we continued having breakfast with that bittersweet atmosphere, Vierra went down to the first floor.
"Captain! Lady Zenith has woken up!!" She announced and Paul jumped up from his chair and went up the stairs.
Here we go...
...
And yes, my suspicions were right, despite having arrived a year earlier, Zenith remained in the same vegetative state.
Of course Paul was devastated and I could hear his crying from downstairs, the already depressed air became miserable since technically the person known as Zenith Greyrat was nothing more than an empty shell, but she had simply lost her ability to communicate with words, instead she was now able to read minds which makes her a Miko, but I will let them find out eventually.
My role here was technically over, obviously I would lead them all to Sharia and from there I would return to the sacred land of the sword, I miss Nina, Ghislaine and Eris. But there was already the problem of Roxy...
I should talk to her and see if she would accept being the fourth, I know she deserves more than that, but even so, if I let her get together with Rudeus, my trip here would be practically for nothing, but if I don't, Lara will never be born and Hitogami will wander free for all eternity...
What a shitty situation
I was currently in a bar accompanying Elinalise, Talhand had dragged Roxy to exchange her rewards for money at the market even though she wanted to come with me, but that gives me time to talk to her.
"So, what's with that long face?" She muttered while drinking her third pint of beer.
"It's about Roxy and what you told me the day we rescued Zenith..." I muttered
"Hmm? Have you made any decisions yet? Tell me the details" She said with a mocking smile.
"No...I'm actually conflicted, you see...I'm actually"
So I spent about half an hour explaining my romantic situation, Elinalise's smile obviously turned into a frown and she ended up stroking her temples in frustration.
"So...you're already engaged and yet you did it with me in the desert?!" She said slightly raising her voice.
"You forced me, and you said it was a curse" I reproached her crossing my arms.
(sigh) "Yes, that's what I said... and if we didn't, I would have perished in the desert, let's forget about that" she said shaking her hand.
"Now, the issue is Roxy, if you were an honorable man you would reject her, but it turns out that you already have two girlfriends, right? What difference would it make if you took Roxy?" she said pointing at me with her hand.
"I would do it if I could, but it would be very different if she wanted to, it could be an insult to her and she would end up hating me, if that's so, I want to reject her in the nicest way possible..." I murmured.
"I see, and if you say that, why are you talking to me and not to her?" Elinalise said raising an eyebrow.
"You are her friend, you have known her for years, I would like you to do me that favor, take her out for a drink and tell her my situation as gossip" I said shrugging my shoulders.
"And what do I get in return?" she murmured.
"What?...my gratitude?" I murmured.
Elinalise arched an eyebrow and smiled.
"Hehe, nevermind, it's only fair, the poor thing just wants to jump into your arms, but when I tell her you'll have to talk to her directly" Elinalise warned.
"I understand" I said with a smile.
Thus that conversation ended and she returned to the inn almost at midnight to sleep, Elinalise stayed there to relieve her curse.
...
The next day Paul gathered everyone together and informed us that we would be leaving the city, but before we did I explained the route that Elinalise and I followed, I told them that we were going to use a unique method of travel "the teleportation circles" I told them, there was no point in hiding it, Paul and his family wouldn't mention it, that fucking Gesse already knew, and I didn't care about Talhand and the sisters.
"Hmm Gesse is the type to drink a few drinks and spill the beans" Elinalise muttered.
"Hmm, well, I'll make sure not to mention the boss's name even if that happens, so don't worry" Gesse muttered.
Paul turned to Lilia "How is Zenith? We'll be traveling through a desert for almost a month, do you think she can handle it?"
"I'm not sure, but I'll take care of her along the way" she said.
"I appreciate it" Paul replied with a smile.
Lilia looked very serious as she stated her intentions, if there was any problem with Zenith's stamina, we could just slow down our group.
"If you're worried, let's just buy a wagon" Gesse said.
"You do realize we'll have to leave it at some point?" Elinalise pointed out.
"Who cares? We're drowning in money right now" Gesse reproached.
"We take what we can to Asura to sell" she said showing a bag full of magic crystals and accessories like pendants and rings.
I had my own bag too so it wasn't much of a problem.
"Plus we did a thorough sweep of the area at the end, but we never found any clue as to why Zenith ended up there" Gesse said shrugging.
"Nothing huh? Well, thanks for looking" Paul said.
"No, it was nothing" the monkey replied.
"Gino, could I entrust you and Elinalise with the preparations for our departure?" Paul asked.
"Yes" I replied.
"It's okay" Elinalise replied.
We planned our trip down to the last detail, I knew the route, and everyone present was an experienced traveler, but I didn't want us to lose anyone, so I proceeded with caution, we plotted a route that would allow us to avoid the bandits we had encountered along the way, the road was a bit off course, but that wouldn't be a problem.
Paul was worried about Zenith, but that problem was quickly solved, Gesse bought a one-man carriage pulled by a beast that looked like an armadillo, it seemed to have been specially designed for traveling through the desert, I quickly named the animal GIrou, the GOAT.
Unfortunately I couldn't take it to the sacred land of the sword, so I resigned myself to selling it at the Sharia.
...
The journey went smoothly, we slipped easily between the bandits, we encountered some monsters along the way, but with our numbers, they did not represent any danger, we had two warriors, two magicians, a warrior magician, a healer and two swordsmen, there was a clear difference in power between each person, but we were well balanced.
Apart from that there was nothing else to worry about, now it was time to talk to Roxy...
...
The perfect moment came when we both had to stand night watch, we were both sitting in front of a campfire and just watching the fire crackle.
But there came a point when Roxy got really close to me, our shoulders were practically glued together at this point.
"eh...Roxy?" I muttered
"What's wrong Gino?" She replied softly.
Shit, here we go...
"The truth is that I have really enjoyed the days we have spent together, without your help I would never have been able to defeat the Hydra and I consider you a good friend but... I have noticed the way you look at me and I can't help but wonder...if you liked me" I murmured softly.
Roxy shuddered at my words and looked down at the ground as she blushed deeply.
"Yes... I like you, I like you a lot, I thought I would have a chance but, Elinalise told me everything... and I thought that if you already had three it wouldn't affect you having another one..." she murmured while crying.
I could only stand in shock, she actually agreed?...ah yes...even with Rudeus she agreed to be second...
"But it was cruel, you know? She knew I loved you and she never said anything to me," Roxy murmured softly.
It hurt my heart to see her like that, but I couldn't do anything about it.
"Roxy, you know where I come from right?..." I murmured.
"From the sword sanctuary?..." She muttered, sniffling.
"Yes... that is a long way and I will go there to become the Sword God, if I do that I will have a very big responsibility there..." I said as I analyzed Roxy's reaction.
"And Elinalise told me that your dream is to become a teacher, right? In Sharia, right? I don't think being with me would benefit your dream," I said.
Roxy blinked several times and started crying again, I could only look away in remorse.
"I would never be able to force you to leave your dreams behind, for me, I have people waiting for me in the sacred land of the sword, Would you leave all that behind for me?" I asked her while looking into her eyes.
She had red eyes and she was breathing heavily as she looked at me.
"n-no...that's my dream...you have your own dream don't you?" She murmured, clutching his robe "Besides, I don't think your girlfriends will accept me," she laughed miserably and I could only sigh.
"I don't think that's the problem, but I don't want to drag you down with me forever..." I muttered.
Roxy's eyes widened as she looked at me.
"I-I want to go with you..." She suddenly murmured.
"What?..." I said without understanding
"You said that if your girlfriends accept me I can be with you right? But if that doesn't happen, I will stay in Sharia..." She murmured.
"Wait, wait, wait" I said getting up from my place.
"You said a few moments ago that you didn't want to give up on your dream for me...why did you change your mind so quickly!" I said exasperated.
"My dream is to get married too..." She murmured.
"And if I had to choose between being a teacher and getting married... I prefer you, I prefer the person I will spend the rest of my life with..." She murmured.
I could only slap myself in the face at this statement.
I'm fucking cooked.
"Roxy Migurdia... are you sure of what you say? Because if you accept then you will be mine forever" I said.
She blushed tremendously but smiled.
"I wouldn't want anything else" she replied.
Okay, I guess this is goodbye for Lara...
