My Daddy Hides His Power

Chapter 231

The wife who looked back smiled brightly.

My angel who always had a beautiful smile.

 Lilith.

The revolution succeeded, bringing peace to the empire. And Cheshire gained a new family with a new name.

Lilith, who had been his lover, was now his wife, and Cheshire was her husband.

A family that everyone else had.

Though it was an ordinary relationship, every day was filled with such overwhelming emotions for Cheshire.

 “Aww, honey. That tickles…”

 “What are you making?”

Cheshire, who kept kissing the back of Lilith’s neck and her cheeks, asked,

When he noticed that his wife, who usually liked to sleep in, was up earlier than usual, he saw food bubbling on the stove.

“What, what am I making? Can’t you tell what it is just by looking?”

 Lilith was embarrassed.

“This is your favorite! It’s a stew made with tomatoes and beef…?”

 “….”

 …Really? This?

Bubbles rose from the stew that was boiling red.

It looked like food straight out of hell, as if it had just been pulled from the depths of a demon’s kitchen.

“I, it may not look great, but it should taste good. The smell isn’t bad, right? Please give it a try, honey.”

Lilith blew on a spoonful of hellfire to cool it down, then pushed it in.

Cheshire hesitated for a moment before tasting it.

 “….”

 “How is it?”

The taste… was just as it looked.

 “Is it delicious?”

 “Mhm. Very good.”

Of course, he was the kind of husband who could offer a white lie to ensure his hopeful wife wasn’t disappointed.

“However, I’ll take care of the rest.”

But he can’t feed this to his wife.

As he reached for the apron, Lilith shook her head vigorously.

“Ey, not today. You always cook, you know. I have a conscience too. At least on your birthday, let me do it.”

 “Ah.”

 That’s right.

 Today is my birthday.

 Cheshire smiled again.

 Birthday.

It was a day that meant nothing to him, who had lived without being able to die.

Just one of many days. He had never celebrated it, and no one had celebrated it for him.

But everything changed after he met Lilith. Thanks to her, who makes his birthday happy every year, even Cheshire began to look forward to what was once a meaningless day.

 “Happy birthday, honey.”

Really, he’s so incredibly happy that it would be okay to die just like this.

 “Thank you.”

I wish you could continue to celebrate by my side for the rest of my life.

 Birthdays are such happy days.

“Oh, come to your senses!”

Lilith was startled and released Cheshire’s arms that were still wrapped around her waist.

“Is our prince awake? I need to change his diaper!”

 Prince?

 Oh, that’s right.

 He had a son.

A lovely prince, nearly a year old, who is equally a perfect mix of Lilith and himself.

Cheshire stopped Lilith from taking off her apron.

 “I’ll do it.”

“Would you? Then please. I’ll make breakfast too.”

 “Mhm.”

For some reason, Cheshire’s heart pounded as he turned away.

 Why is it?

It’s the face of his son that he sees every day.

Just yesterday, he was definitely keeping his mother up all night, whining and making her miserable, and she had to soothe him until he finally fell asleep.

Why is he so curious and wanting to see him?

Cheshire, who arrived at the baby’s room at a brisk pace, was dazed as he looked at the small bed in the distance.

 “….”

 One step, one step.

He became nervous with every step he took.

After a while, Cheshire looked into the bed and froze.

 “Gyaaaa.”

The son stretched out his arms, smiling brightly as if he were happy to see his father.

 His chubby fingers wiggled.

 Jet-black hair and blue eyes.

In his eyes, which seemed to hold the sea like his mother’s, Cheshire’s reflection appeared.

 “Ah….”

 What is this… feeling?

Did he feel this way when he held his newborn son in his arms?

Feeling a new sensation that made his heart flutter, Cheshire slowly stretched out his arms and hugged his son.

 “Da…”

 Da…?

 “Da… daad!”

At that moment, Cheshire’s eyes widened.

 Dad.

 The child said, “Dad.”

The son who was the first to say ‘Mom.’

Even though it had been a while since he started babbling, he still hadn’t said ‘Dad,’ which made me secretly a bit disappointed.

As if he had read his father’s mind.

“Daad!”

 The child kept calling Cheshire.

 “Ah.”

 He soon realized.

 ‘This was it.’

The life I had hoped for.

 I wanted a family.

It had been something he had longed for since he was very young.

Even if he gets hurt, wounded, or suffers…

He had always wanted a family.

Even though his mother, who raised her illegitimate child alone, kept pushing him away, she was still by his side.

But she was his only family.

Even though being left in his father’s care didn’t change his miserable life, he stubbornly endured without giving up.

He kept enduring, thinking that maybe, just maybe, he’d eventually hear a kind word.

Because someday, I thought he might call me family.

Because someday, I thought he might love me.

 “….”

A surge of emotion hit him. His eyes stung with tears.

Finally, he had built the ‘family’ he had desperately longed for.

And he no longer had to worry about anyone threatening the strong walls of his family.

Now this country is at peace.

Because he was the one who had created this peace.

 The child, my son…

If there was something he wanted to do, he could do anything. He didn’t have to pick up a sword.

He didn’t have to bow his head to anyone, could be friends with anyone, and could grow up in a happy home, receiving nothing but love without any worries.

 “Haa, ha.”

 Cheshire’s breathing became rough.

Though it seemed like he was crying and his eyes were filled with tears, he was smiling.

 It wasn’t just his son.

Now, all the children could live like that. No, they were living like that.

In this country that I changed.

In the peace that I finally completed.

 “Daaaad….!”

 “Yeah…”

 Tuk.

 “…I, I am your father.”

A single tear from Cheshire fell onto the chubby cheek of the child.

 ‘I did it.’

The poor child who was just waiting for the day to die.

Thousands of ‘Cheshires’ who had wandered the streets without a home or a name.

 All those children disappeared.

And so, hundreds and thousands of ‘Cheshire Libres’ who had built happy families and laughed without worries were born.

In the end, it was a peace he had created.

 “I…”

Cheshire, laughing through his sobs, wiped away his tears that had fallen onto his son’s cheek.

 “I did it….”

“Oh my! Honey, why are you crying?”

Cheshire turned to look at Lilith, who had approached without him noticing.

“Why are you trying to kill His Majesty the Emperor?”

 “Because I’m Primera?”

 “Is there any other reason?”

 Yeah, Lilith.

 I understand now.

“Think about it. What do you really want?”

From the moment you saved me.

From the moment you showed me hope in my life that was full of despair.

From the moment you told me that even people can dream.

I’ve been hoping for this kind of future.

 And, in this country…

I wanted to create hundreds, thousands of me who enjoy this kind of happy future.

 That’s why I came running.

 “The child…”

Cheshire hugged his wife tightly, along with the child in his arms.

A sense of complete fulfillment filled his heart deeply, leaving him with nothing more to wish for.

 “The child said, ‘Dad’…”

 Right now,

He was extremely happy in the peaceful country he had created.

 * * *

 “The child said, ‘Dad’…”

The moment he opened his eyes while mumbling.

Lilith was looking down at him lying there with a surprised expression.

 His wife looked somehow young.

 No, that wasn’t it…

 ‘Ah, it was a dream.’

Realizing this, Cheshire suddenly jumped up.

He had fallen asleep in the priest’s quarters of the Argonia Temple.

 It was already morning.

 “What did you dream about?”

 Dream…

He had made Lilith his wife without permission. As if that weren’t enough, he had embraced her and showered her with kisses everywhere.

 “….”

Embarrassed, Cheshire got up in a hurry and stood by the window with his back to Lilith.

He was so flustered that he just looked out the window without saying a word—

“Hey. What did you dream about?”

―Lilith, who had approached his side, poked him. Her voice was filled with laughter.

“Did the kid call you ‘Dad’? You must have dreamed of becoming a father, right?”

 “….”

“Ahahaha! What~! I’m curious. Tell me. Was it a son or a daughter?”

 “I, I don’t know.”

Cheshire rubbed his flushed cheeks with the back of his hand and ran away from Lilith. Lilith stubbornly held onto his arm and followed him.

“Oh, come on, tell me!! Did the child’s mom appear in your dream? Who was she? I’m so curious!”

 “I really don’t. I don’t remember. I’m going to wash up.”

 “How sneaky!”

Behind the door that was closing, Lilith’s grumbling voice could be heard.

 Tak.

Cheshire closed the door and stood outside, quietly recalling the dream.

 Was that really a dream?

Lilith’s scent and the warmth from when he held her close.

His son’s face, voice, and the moment he called him ‘Dad’ were all so vivid.

‘Well. It might not be a dream.’

 Yeah, maybe.

 A certain future that wasn’t a dream.

At the end of his path, there was surely a future where this dream would become reality.

‘The reason I… risk my life and take up the sword.’

He felt like he could answer now.

 ‘Lilith…’

 For you.

 And, for me.

For the hundreds and thousands of people like you and me living in this country.

So that they can finally be happy.

 I will definitely do it.

Cheshire smiled brightly for the first time since he was born.

‘It was a really good dream.’

 —That’s what he thought.
