Chapter 25: Chapter 25: The Empath
The dim glow of the Harem System interface hovered in the corner of the room, casting an ethereal light over Aoyama's cramped apartment. He stared at the now-familiar "Spin" button with a mix of dread and curiosity. Aqua lounged on the futon, flipping through a magazine, while Albedo meticulously polished a tea set she'd acquired on one of their recent outings.
"You're not seriously going to press it again, are you?" Aqua asked, raising an eyebrow.
"We know what happens every time," Albedo added, her voice laced with skepticism. "It's chaos, and somehow it always involves more insanity than I care for."
Aoyama sighed, rubbing his temples. "We don't really have a choice, do we? The system keeps reminding me, and ignoring it isn't exactly an option."
"Then just get it over with," Aqua said, rolling her eyes. "What's the worst that could happen?"
Aoyama hesitated for a moment longer before finally steeling himself. "Here goes nothing." He pressed the button.
The interface flared to life, spinning wildly. Names flashed across the screen in a blur: Tsunade, Emilia, Rias, Mantis… Wait, Mantis?
The wheel slowed and landed on the name written in elegant green letters:
Mantis – Guardians of the Galaxy
A blinding light filled the room, and Aoyama shielded his eyes. Aqua and Albedo exchanged concerned glances, their previous bravado vanishing in an instant. When the light finally dimmed, a new figure stood in the center of the room.
A delicate woman with large, expressive black eyes and sleek antennae perched atop her head looked around curiously. Her emerald green jumpsuit shimmered faintly under the glow of the system. She clasped her hands together, her expression wide-eyed and innocent.
"Hello," Mantis said softly, her voice calm and melodic. "I… feel nervous. Where am I?"
Aoyama blinked, unsure how to respond. "Uh… Welcome to my apartment? And, um, my harem?"
Mantis tilted her head, her antennae twitching slightly. "A harem? What is that? It sounds… strange."
Aqua burst out laughing. "Oh, this is going to be good. She doesn't even know what a harem is!"
Albedo, however, crossed her arms, her golden eyes narrowing. "Another one? This system is getting more absurd by the second."
"Wait, wait!" Aoyama raised his hands in defense, addressing the growing tension in the room. "Mantis, let me explain. You've been summoned here by this weird system, and, well, it wants us all to… uh, get along."
Mantis looked around at Aqua, who was grinning mischievously, and Albedo, who appeared less than amused. Her expression softened, and she clasped her hands to her chest. "I sense many emotions here. Excitement, frustration, curiosity… and fear." Her gaze landed on Aoyama. "You feel overwhelmed, don't you?"
Aoyama's jaw dropped. "How did you—?"
"I can feel your emotions," Mantis explained, smiling serenely. "It's one of my abilities."
"Fantastic," Albedo muttered. "A mind-reader. Just what we needed."
"I don't read minds," Mantis corrected gently. "I feel emotions. And I can also… influence them, if needed."
Aqua's grin widened. "Oh, this is going to be fun."
As the day went on, Mantis's gentle and inquisitive nature began to shine through. She marveled at the simplest things, from the tiny potted plant on Aoyama's windowsill to the peculiar taste of instant ramen. Her curiosity was infectious, though it also led to some awkward moments.
"Why do you keep so many empty noodle cups?" Mantis asked, tilting her head at the stack in the corner.
"I… uh… don't judge me," Aoyama muttered, his face flushing.
Aqua cackled. "Too late! She's already reading you like a book."
Albedo, meanwhile, remained distant, observing Mantis with a critical eye. "Your abilities are intriguing," she admitted, "but don't think for a second that I trust you."
"I wouldn't want you to feel uncomfortable," Mantis said earnestly. "Perhaps I can help you feel more at ease?"
"Don't you dare," Albedo warned, her wings flaring slightly.
"Mantis," Aoyama interjected quickly, "maybe it's best if you just let Albedo adjust on her own. She… takes time to warm up to people."
Mantis nodded, her expression thoughtful. "I understand. I will try not to intrude."
Later that evening, the group sat around the small table for dinner. Aqua recounted a dramatic story from her art club, Albedo sipped her tea in dignified silence, and Mantis observed everything with wide-eyed fascination.
"I sense happiness," Mantis said suddenly, looking at Aoyama. "You feel… lighter now."
Aoyama froze, his chopsticks halfway to his mouth. "Uh… Yeah, I guess I do. It's been nice having you all around."
Aqua smirked. "See? You're lucky to have us."
"Don't get used to it," Albedo said sharply, though her tone lacked its usual edge.
Mantis smiled softly, her antennae twitching. "I think… this is a good place for me. I can feel it."
Aoyama glanced at her, his chest tightening. Despite the chaos, he couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth growing in the apartment. For the first time, his strange little harem didn't seem like a curse—it felt like a family.
