My Girlfriend is an Evil Woman

Chapter 50 - The Director and the Leading Actress Have a Grudge

Kitahara Hideji’s tone was firm and heartwarming, and the light shining on his face gave it a faint halo. His gaze was gentle, overflowing with understanding and care. Ono Yoko couldn’t help but be captivated by his words. She gently held Kitahara Hideji’s hand and earnestly asked, “Onii-san, do you really think that way? Do you believe I will succeed in the future?”

Kitahara Hideji couldn’t be sure, not even for himself. Even if he firmly believed he would succeed, the future was uncertain, and no one could guarantee it. Fate was unpredictable, often playing with people’s lives like a game.

However, the words he just spoke were genuine. As long as Ono Yoko could endure these ten years of hardship without losing her way, her mental resilience would surpass that of her peers. Whether in the entertainment industry or other endeavors, she would have a considerable advantage. The ten years of endurance would shape her into a confident and resilient warrior. Even if she stumbled at times, with this foundation of enduring suffering for a decade, she would quickly get up and climb towards the mountaintop again. Failure was not the issue; the key was whether you had the courage and determination to stand up again and face difficulties without fear.

Just like what Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

Confidence was more precious than gold!

He gripped Ono Yoko’s hand firmly and sincerely said, “I believe in you, Yoko!”

Ono Yoko’s eyes began to well up with tears, touched by Kitahara Hideji’s words. She knew that he was probably trying to comfort her, and no one could be certain about what would happen in ten years. But the sincerity in his words touched her deeply. No one had ever spoken to her like this before.

To her, these words were more valuable than diamonds.

Feeling the warmth of Kitahara Hideji’s hand, she looked up at him with a determined expression, “I accept your investment, Onii-san. I promise you that in the future, I will make a lot of money for you!” She didn’t want to spend Kitahara Hideji’s money, as she didn’t really need much. But she wanted to prove to herself and to him that he was not mistaken in believing in her.

But after saying that, Ono Yoko felt very embarrassed. She looked at the piece of wheat bran cake in her hand, took a big bite, and pretended to choke on it. She turned away to wipe her tears secretly so as not to leave a bad impression on Kitahara Hideji. Hyakujirou stretched its body, wanting to lick her, but Kitahara Hideji pulled it aside. The poor dog looked aggrieved but didn’t dare to protest, so it obediently went to the other side and stuck out its tongue, looking at Ono Yoko.

Kitahara Hideji acted as if he hadn’t noticed and handed Ono Yoko a glass of water with a gentle smile. He said, “I’m looking forward to the day when Yoko earns money and treats me to something delicious—it must be meat!”

Ono Yoko turned back with a sweet smile, nodding her little head seriously, “I’ll treat Onii-san to all the delicious food!”

If that day really comes, Onii-san, I won’t let you regret a single word you said today. This is a promise I don’t need to say out loud.

Kitahara Hideji rubbed her head playfully, not taking it too seriously. He wasn’t really expecting her to treat him with the food in the future. He said, “Have some water. Your nighttime drama is about to start.”

Ono Yoko was taken aback and quickly turned up the volume. Indeed, the opening advertisements had started, and there were long-legged girls dancing with milk in their hands. Only then did she relax a bit. She glanced at the welfare coupon and paper money on the table in front of Kitahara Hideji and hesitated to ask, “What should I do with these, Onii-san?”

Kitahara Hideji picked them up and put them in her pocket, smiling, “Use them as your pocket money. Now that your big brother is a bit older, the bigger the responsibility, so I’ll take care of improving our lives.”

Ono Yoko tilted her head, thinking for a moment. She knew Kitahara Hideji for almost a month now and knew what he liked. She smiled sweetly and said, “Then I’ll use them to buy some stationery and reference books. Onii-san, if there’s any left, can I buy a little more dog food for Hyakujirou?”

Kitahara Hideji was pleased with her choice. Investing in knowledge is always the most worthwhile. He nodded repeatedly and said, contentedly, “I think that’s a great idea!”

After saying that, he touched Ono Yoko’s head again—for some reason, he always wanted to touch it, it felt addicting—then he motioned for her to watch TV while he reached for a book and started reading. Japanese history was quite complicated, from the Heian period to the Kamakura period, about 140 years of constant turmoil and conflicts. It seemed like there was never a moment of peace.

In an era where people struggle to eat a bowl of rice from just an acre of land, they don’t bother about cultivating various crops or having good farmland to fill their stomachs. Instead, they seem to take delight in harming others. What are these people thinking?

Ono Yoko hesitated for a moment, not wanting to disturb Kitahara Hideji while he studied. But she also felt reluctant to leave, as this place had the warmth of a living person. So she tentatively suggested, “Onii-san, should I go back home now?”

Kitahara Hideji didn’t mind and waved his hand, saying, “Finish the snacks first before leaving. I’m just flipping through the book casually to get some ideas.”

“That’s alright. Onii-san should eat too,” Ono Yoko said, noticing that he was only flipping through the book without really focusing on studying. She handed him a piece of snack, and Kitahara Hideji accepted it, absentmindedly eating it.

Hmm… The taste was just ordinary. Little Radish’s dad was indeed a third-rate cook; his cooking and snacks weren’t that great.

He chewed on the snack while continuing to flip through the book, trying to figure out the relationships between the characters. When he opened his eyes, he noticed that Ono Yoko was fully engrossed in the TV show, and Hyakujirou was in front of her, carefully licking the dog food can—cleaner than if it were washed with a high-pressure water gun.

Curious, Kitahara Hideji glanced at the TV and found that it was the same drama, “R-chan, Ganbatte.” He couldn’t help but wonder, “Is this drama still airing?”

Ono Yoko’s eyes didn’t leave the screen as she softly replied, “I heard they are planning to shoot over 400 episodes. It’s just getting started, Onii-san.”

Kitahara Hideji was slightly surprised. This foolish TV drama was going to have over 400 episodes? Shouldn’t it have been canceled long ago? He hesitated and asked, “Is the viewership high?”

“It’s incredibly popular. Many people at school are discussing it!” Ono Yoko really liked the show; she was probably a die-hard fan.

Kitahara Hideji lowered his head in reflection for a moment. It seemed that being a foreigner made it challenging to understand the local aesthetic sensibilities. He absentmindedly picked up a piece of snack and took a bite, planning to watch for a while to study what was happening. As an international student, it was essential to integrate into the local culture; otherwise, it could be quite challenging to understand the true intentions behind people’s actions and words.

On the 14-inch television, scenes flickered, and voices rang out—

“Hyakujirou-sensei, please stop chasing me. I can’t make you happy!” A girl covered in bandages like a mummy was running through the streets at night. Despite her injuries, she ran incredibly fast, shedding tears as she muttered softly.

In the sky, silver snakes occasionally streaked past, while on the ground, strong winds howled, swirling fallen leaves.

Kitahara Hideji hesitated for a moment and asked, “Is this R-chan, the female lead? Has she not recovered from her injuries since the last car accident?” It had been at least twenty episodes already, and the plot seemed to progress quite slowly!

Ono Yoko shook her head, feeling a bit sorrowful as she replied, “Yes, she’s R-chan, but these are not the injuries from the last accident. After losing her memory in the previous car accident, she got into another car accident, and then there was a medical accident where her kidney was mistakenly removed. Later, she got severely burned while taking a shower… Her life is full of disasters and hardships. It’s really pitiful and deserving of sympathy.”

Kitahara Hideji was shocked as he watched the TV screen. In the next scene, the male lead was riding a bicycle, crazily chasing after R-chan, while continuously reaching out and calling out in grief, “R-chan, I can’t be without you! Come back quickly!”

R-chan shook her head as if she had taken some ecstasy pills, her tears flowing like a river. Although she seemed to run not very fast and maintained an elegant posture, the teacher Hyakujirou behind her couldn’t catch up. He was pedaling the bicycle with all his might but was gradually left far behind when viewed from a distant camera angle.

Kitahara Hideji was even more puzzled. Unable to hold back, he asked in a low voice, “Isn’t this a bit unreasonable?” While TV dramas could be exaggerated, this seemed to be taking exaggeration to another level!

Ono Yoko sniffled, seemingly empathizing with R-chan’s predicament or projecting herself into the role of the female lead. She explained, “R-chan is excellent at school, not only excelling in her studies but also the star athlete in the track and field club. So she runs very fast.”

Kitahara Hideji was shocked again. Was there such a character setting? Judging from her posture and bandages, R-chan could probably run even faster. Her speed could conservatively estimate to be around 120 mph! She could easily win gold at the Olympic Games; even Usain Bolt wouldn’t be able to keep up with her!

He watched the male and female lead’s cat-and-mouse chase for five minutes, interspersed with many melodramatic lines like “I love you, but I can’t marry you!”, “I’m so sad, please let me die!”, “I can’t lose you; if you die, I’ll die too!” The thick scent of melodrama and blood filled the air, making one want to bang their head against the wall.

Kitahara Hideji was dumbfounded watching the escape and chase for an entire episode. The plot seemed to revolve around this repetitive pattern. As he was wondering if the episode would end like this, suddenly, a construction vehicle, capable of carrying a 30-ton load, appeared on the street. It charged out with a resolute attitude, as if saying, “I am determined to crush you!” It paid no attention to the girl with bandages running towards it and went straight for her.

The bandaged girl flew up into the sky, spiraling upwards like a dancing feather, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene. She murmured softly, “Ah~~~ Hyakujirou-sensei!”

Unfortunately, before she could finish her words, a thick lightning bolt, as wide as a water bucket, struck her slender body in mid-air. The special effects were impressive, with bones appearing in alternating brightness and darkness, flashing continuously and prominently.

The camera then switched to the male lead, Hyakujirou-sensei, who was kneeling on the ground, howling to the sky, “Ah, no—R-chan!”

The scene froze suddenly, with only the lingering echoes of the male lead’s screams. The director’s voiceover appeared on the screen, dripping with a sinister aura, revealing the ominous tone of the story: R-chan and Hyakujirou-sensei’s deep and torturous love affair had encountered a major accident. What would happen next? Could true love conquer all obstacles? Where would destiny lead them? Find out in the next episode, airing tomorrow at the scheduled time!

Kitahara Hideji took a sharp breath, his body shuddering. He turned to look at Ono Yoko, who was tightly clutching her clothes over her chest, her expression filled with worry, and her delicate body trembling. Kitahara Hideji hesitated for a moment and cautiously asked, “What do you think of this episode, Yoko?”

Was this forcibly melodramatic TV drama actually popular? Was it a moral decline or a loss of humanity, or was it his problem or a difference in cultural norms?

Ono Yoko gasped for breath and replied, “It’s very captivating, emotional, and heartrending, with suspense… What about you, Onii-san?”

Her face was full of anticipation, and she held her hands to her chest as if hoping to share the same opinion with Kitahara Hideji.

Kitahara Hideji pondered for a moment and nodded gently, not daring to speak the truth. He just consoled her, saying, “It’s quite good!” However, he felt that something was not quite right. The repeated tortures of the female lead in this melodramatic relationship seemed a bit excessive; there might be a personal vendetta between the director and the female lead.
