Chapter 19: Chapter 19 The Highway
Spread out in a "big" character shape on the bed, Chen Yu exhaled contentedly.
He closed his eyes and began to envision his bright future...
After an afternoon and a night of tossing and experimenting, he had roughly figured out how to use his "title."
It was simple.
Three sentences.
That was to continuously seek people who shared the same "title" as him, change their "title," and thereby copy their abilities.
These copiable "abilities" included but were not limited to—physical fitness, memory, cultural knowledge, and so forth.
The mysterious and profound "supernatural abilities" were probably included as well.
Thus, it was clear that an easy path leading straight to the peak lay before him...
"Copy supernatural abilities, become the most awesome supernatural being!"
With that thought, Chen Yu abruptly sat up, excitedly rubbing his hands together.
"What a pity."
"Had I known the secret of my 'title' earlier, then..."
Whether it was [World's Number One Serial Corpse Mutilator], [Extremist], or [Villain], those with such extreme "titles" were invariably "big shots."
So, had he known he had the "Golden Finger" back then, he certainly would have tried to find those people.
If he had managed to copy their abilities, it would have meant instant wealth!
"Oh right, I was arrested by the police at that time. Never mind then."
Realizing this, Chen Yu lay back down relaxedly.
He continued to dream about his limitless potential for growth.
According to the rules of his "title," he was destined to have a better life each month than the last.
Titles like [Academician of the Science Academy], [Global Superstar], and even [Supernatural Expert] would inevitably be his one day.
At that point, the powers he could copy from those "strong" individuals would obviously be way cooler than those of a minor criminal like [Villain].
"As long as I find a way to make contact with them."
Lying on his bed, after roughly planning his future life, Chen Yu remembered the important stuff and took out his phone to video call his older sister.
"Ring—"
The ringing lasted only half a second before it was picked up at the other end.
"Brother, calling me so late?" A quite pretty girl appeared on the phone screen.
It was Chen Yu's sister in this world.
"I have some good news for you," Chen Yu sat up, scanning the room with his phone's camera, "I'm home."
"You're out!" Chen looked surprised, weariness on her face but joy hard to conceal, "Is your title gone?!"
"Gone." Chen Yu lifted the camera to show the new title over his head, [Useless Homebody].
"No longer [Corpse], that's great." Chen took a deep breath of relief, "Thank the government, thank the state."
During the several months he "stayed" in prison and at the Security Bureau, the government never informed his family about his "title" being changed to "criminal" or anything similar.
As a result, his family always thought he was being protected by the state because of his title, [Corpse].
"It's really great, you don't have to suffer in prison anymore. Eh? Why did your title change to [Useless Homebody]? It sounds awful."
"Ah… spending all day in my room, naturally I've become a 'homebody,'" Chen Yu diverted the topic nonchalantly, "How is dad doing? Is his post-surgery recovery going smoothly?"
"It's going well, he can walk now," Chen moved the phone, showing their father asleep on the hospital bed, "He exercised for recovery all day today, got tired. He's sleeping soundly."
"…That's good." Through the screen, seeing his father's aged and weathered face, Chen Yu, melded with the bodily memories, couldn't help but smile complicatedly, "Is money enough? If you're short, I'll send more."
"It's enough, definitely enough," Chen hastily replied, "Aren't you still cooperating with the national research institute for studies? Keep the rest of the money for yourself, eat more good food, get some nutrition."
"Mm… okay," Chen Yu pinched his nose and nodded.
The money he had now was all conned from the "big shots" in prison.
A total of nearly two million.
A large portion was used for the family's surgery expenses.
As such, Chen Yu had lied to his family that this money was compensation given by the government for researching his "predictive title."
His family believed it.
```
He didn't believe it either, but if he didn't undergo surgery, his father was going to die.
With the money his sister earned by doing part-time jobs from dawn to dusk, and some private online jobs his "former self" had taken, it would take twenty years to afford the surgery.
Moreover, he heard the involved capital group was just waiting for his dad to pass away. They could just give a death subsidy and save costs...
"Little brother, when are you coming back? Didn't the school grant you a long leave? You can come home for a visit." On the phone screen, Chen asked.
"I can't these days, something came up unexpectedly," Chen Yu waved at the camera. "I'll return home once I'm done. It will be no more than two weeks. I've to hang up now, sis, take care of dad."
"Okay. Make sure to eat well, and if there are any dangerous human experiments, don't participate," Chen advised. "We aren't short of money now."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Chen Yu threw his phone aside and lay down expressionlessly, his head resting on his arms, staring at the ceiling.
He didn't know what he was thinking about.
Nor did he know how much time had passed when he fell asleep.
...
"Beep beep beep beep!"
"Beep beep beep beep!"
In the early morning, a harsh noise woke Chen Yu.
Groggily, he opened his eyes, stared blankly for a while, irritatedly turned off his phone's alarm, and closed his eyes again.
"Beep beep beep beep—"
When the alarm went off a second time, Chen Yu finally dragged his sluggish body out of bed and staggered into the bathroom.
As he turned on the tap and splashed cold water on his face, he became much more awake.
"Ah—"
With a big yawn, Chen Yu washed his face, grabbed a random jacket to wear, opened his room door, and walked towards his stout neighbor's house.
Upon approaching, he noticed the neighbor's security door was ajar.
A sweaty stout neighbor was "huffing and puffing" as he moved boxes.
Some boxes contained household goods.
Others contained electronic hardware.
There were also figurines.
"Hey, bro." Chen Yu leaned against the doorframe, curiously asking, "What are you doing?"
"Ah!" The stout neighbor jumped in fright, nearly scattering the box containing a computer and game console he was holding: "You... why are you here?"
"Swoosh."
Chen Yu drew a bone-chopping knife from behind his waist, scratching his chin with it. "I'm asking you, what are you doing."
"Ah... I... I'm throwing out the trash," the stout neighbor explained in panic, his face turning pale.
"Throwing out trash?" Chen Yu was surprised. "All these good things, you don't want them?"
"Ah... ah... yes."
"That's such a waste," Chen Yu stepped back slightly, making way. "Since it's trash either way, whether you throw it outside or give it to me. Bro, just move it into my place then."
"Ah? I..." The pain on the stout neighbor's face was visible.
"Yesterday I gave you fifty thousand yuan," Chen Yu frowned. "Today you don't even want to give me your trash to throw away?"
"No, it's not that, it's just..."
"Could it be that you want to move, bro?" Chen Yu fiddled with the knife in his hand. "Last night, that wasn't what we agreed upon."
"Who's moving? I'm not! I really am just throwing out the trash!" the stout neighbor was so scared that he could hardly keep himself together. "If you want it, I can give it to you right now."
"It seems I misunderstood then," Chen Yu scratched his head innocently. "Alright then. Bro, go ahead."
Neighbor: "..."
Standing still, silent for a long while, the stout neighbor, with a mournful expression, gradually moved his "precious belongings" into the "enemy's" home.
"Oh, by the way." Chen Yu suddenly asked again. "Bro, you didn't relapse and report me again, did you?"
At the mention of this, the neighbor's face suddenly changed.
