My Infinite Mana System

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: A Shattered Peace

The starry expanse of the Rift's Heart faded, replaced by the familiar forest outside the portal. The air felt crisp, heavy with the scent of earth and pine, but something was… different. Allen, Emma, and Kael exchanged uneasy glances as the portal shimmered one final time before collapsing into nothingness.

Emma broke the silence, leaning on her staff. "That was easier than I thought. Too easy."

Kael chuckled, shaking his head. "Easy? You call nearly getting vaporized by a Sentinel easy?"

"No," Emma shot back, her brows furrowing, "but if we just purified the Rift's Core, why doesn't this feel like a victory?"

Allen stared at the spot where the portal had vanished, his hand instinctively tightening on Stormfang. The Riftweaver ability he had just gained pulsed faintly within him, and for the first time, it didn't feel like a blessing it felt like a warning.

"The void isn't gone," Allen said finally. "It's shifted. The power we took from it might've disrupted the balance somewhere else."

Emma frowned, but before she could respond, a loud crack echoed through the air.

The ground beneath their feet trembled, and the forest around them began to warp. Trees twisted unnaturally, their trunks bending at impossible angles. Shadows stretched and writhed, forming shapes that moved independently of the light.

Kael unsheathed his blade, his eyes narrowing. "Uh, guys? This doesn't look like a normal side effect."

Emma quickly cast a protective barrier around them as the shadows converged, forming into monstrous, insectoid creatures. Their bodies were sleek and angular, their glowing red eyes filled with malice.

[System Alert: New Rift Entities Detected – Voidspawn (Level 27). Proceed with Caution.]

Allen stepped forward, activating Riftweaver. A glowing sphere of balance formed in his hand, which he hurled at the creatures. The field exploded on impact, destabilizing the monsters and causing several to dissolve.

But more emerged from the darkness, their numbers seemingly endless.

"We can't fight them all!" Emma shouted, her barrier beginning to crack under the onslaught.

Allen gritted his teeth. "We don't have to. Follow me!"

He activated Harmonized Rift, teleporting through the writhing mass of Voidspawn and carving a path for the others. Kael and Emma followed close behind, fending off the creatures as they ran.

After what felt like an eternity, the trio burst into a clearing, the shadows reluctant to follow. The warped forest seemed to end abruptly, giving way to a strangely serene meadow bathed in moonlight.

In the center stood a figure cloaked in pale blue light. It was humanoid, but its features were indistinct, as if it were only half-formed.

[System Alert: Entity Detected – Unknown. Power Level: ???]

Emma tightened her grip on her staff. "Great. Just when I thought things couldn't get weirder."

The figure raised a hand, and the System chimed again.

[Incoming Communication: Universal Arbiter of Balance.]

"Hunters," the figure said, its voice echoing in their minds. "You have done what few have achieved. The Rift's Core is stabilized, but the balance is far from restored."

Allen stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. "Who are you?"

The figure tilted its head. "I am a fragment of the Arbiter, a construct designed to monitor the equilibrium of existence. The power you wield now, Riftweaver, is both a gift and a burden. Its use has disrupted the threads of reality, and the void retaliates."

Kael groaned. "So, what? We're just supposed to fix everything now?"

The Arbiter's light pulsed faintly. "Yes. Across this world and others, rifts have begun to multiply, spilling chaos into once-stable realms. To restore balance, you must seal them."

Emma frowned. "Why us? Surely there are other hunters out there. Stronger ones."

"The Riftweaver's power binds you to this duty," the Arbiter said. "Its potential exceeds any ability wielded by mortal hunters, but it also marks you as a target. The void will seek to corrupt or destroy you. It has already begun."

Allen felt a chill run down his spine. "What do we need to do?"

"Travel to the Nexus of Realms," the Arbiter replied. "It lies beyond the largest rift, one that has yet to fully manifest. Only there can the threads of balance be repaired. But beware the void's champions will stand in your way."

Before the Arbiter could say more, the meadow trembled violently, and a massive rift tore open in the sky above them. From within emerged a monstrous figure, towering and grotesque, its body a swirling amalgamation of void energy and corrupted flesh.

[System Alert: Void Titan Detected – Level 35. Warning: Extreme Threat Level.]

The Arbiter's form flickered. "It begins. Prove your worth, hunters."

The Void Titan roared, its massive arms slamming into the ground and sending shockwaves rippling through the clearing. Allen activated Harmonized Rift, teleporting to the side and launching a surge of lightning at the creature. The attack struck its arm, but the Titan barely flinched.

"Emma! Buff Kael!" Allen shouted.

Emma quickly cast Radiant Empowerment, imbuing Kael's blade with light energy. Kael charged the Titan, his enhanced strikes cutting deep into its thick hide.

But the Titan retaliated, its massive hand sweeping across the clearing. The force of the blow sent Kael flying into a tree, where he slumped to the ground, groaning.

"Kael!" Emma screamed, rushing to his side. She cast a healing spell, her staff glowing brightly as Kael's wounds began to close.

Allen gritted his teeth, activating Void Storm and unleashing a barrage of balanced energy at the Titan. The attack struck its chest, causing it to stagger.

"Keep it off them!" Allen yelled, drawing the Titan's attention.

The battle raged on, and though the Titan was powerful, the group's teamwork proved stronger. With a final, desperate strike, Allen channeled the Riftweaver's energy into Stormfang, driving it into the Titan's core. The creature let out a deafening roar before dissolving into nothingness.

[Enemy Defeated: 25,000 EXP Gained.]

As the rift above them began to close, the Arbiter reappeared, its light dimmer than before.

"Well done," it said. "But this was only the beginning. The true battle lies ahead."

Before the trio could respond, the Arbiter vanished, leaving them alone in the clearing.

As dawn broke, the group sat in silence, their exhaustion palpable.

"So," Kael said finally, his voice hoarse, "we're supposed to save the world now? No pressure."

Emma chuckled weakly. "It's not like we had much of a choice."

Allen stared at the horizon, his expression unreadable. "We'll need to get stronger. Fast. If this was just the start, we're nowhere near ready for what's coming."

Emma placed a hand on his shoulder. "Wont we just fight it together. Like always."

Kael smirked. "You'd better. I'm not dying alone out there."
