Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Shadows in the Dark
The descent from Mount Longmen was quiet, the weight of the Forgotten Shrine still heavy on Allen's mind. Emma walked beside him, her usual banter subdued. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting the forest in long shadows.
"Static Veil, huh?" Emma broke the silence, glancing at him. "Sounds useful. Have you tried it yet?"
Allen shook his head. "Not yet. I barely understand how it works. The System keeps throwing new things at me faster than I can process."
"Well, you'd better figure it out fast," Emma said, scanning the darkening woods. "Something tells me we're not alone out here."
Emma's instincts proved correct. The soft rustle of leaves turned into the snapping of branches, and before they could react, a group of shadowy figures emerged from the trees.
There were four of them, dressed in dark, tattered armor, their eyes glowing faintly red.

"Reavers," Emma whispered, pulling a small dagger from her belt. "They're dungeon spillovers. Stay sharp."
One of the Reavers lunged at Allen, its claws slashing through the air. He dodged to the side, summoning a bolt of lightning that struck the creature square in the chest. It staggered but didn't fall.
Emma darted forward, slashing at another Reaver. Her movements were quick and precise, and the creature dissolved into dark mist as her blade found its mark.
"Allen, behind you!" she shouted.
He spun, barely managing to raise his hand in time. Acting on instinct, he activated Static Veil. A dome of crackling electricity erupted around him, repelling the Reaver just as it lunged. The creature hissed, its body sizzling as it hit the barrier.
"Not bad," Emma said with a smirk, finishing off another Reaver.
Allen pushed forward, deactivating the Veil and striking the last Reaver with Stormfang. The blade hummed with power, cleaving through the shadowy form and ending the fight.

As the last of the Reavers faded, Allen's System chimed again.
[Warning: Shadow energy detected. The Forgotten Path grows darker.]
"What does that mean?" Emma asked, reading the alert over his shoulder.
Allen shook his head. "I don't know, but it's tied to the Shrine. These things whatever they are they're connected to the System's quests."
Emma frowned. "Shadow Reavers don't just show up randomly. Someone or something is sending them after you."
The realization sent a chill down Allen's spine. "Then we need to figure out who's behind this. Fast."
As they continued down the path, the trees thinned, revealing the distant lights of a small village. The warm glow was a welcome sight after the darkness of the forest.
"Let's stop here for the night," Emma suggested. "We need rest, and you need to figure out that new ability."
The village was quiet, its streets lined with modest houses and shops. They found an inn near the center, a cozy place run by an elderly woman who welcomed them with a kind smile.
After settling in, Allen and Emma sat in the small dining area, sharing a simple meal of rice and stew. As they ate, a man approached their table. He was tall and lean, with sharp features and piercing green eyes. His dark coat was adorned with symbols Allen didn't recognize.
"You're the one who entered the Shrine, aren't you?" the man asked, his voice calm but laced with authority.
Allen tensed. "Who's asking?"
The man raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "Relax. My name is Kael. I'm a Hunter, like you. But I specialize in dealing with… anomalies like the Shrine."
Emma eyed him warily. "And why are you interested in us?"
Kael pulled up a chair, sitting across from them. "Because the Forgotten Path is dangerous. The Shrine you entered is one of many, and they're all connected. If you don't understand what you've stepped into, you're going to get yourselves killed."
Allen leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "Then tell us what you know."
Kael nodded. "The Forgotten Path is tied to an ancient power one that was sealed away for a reason. The Shrines are tests, designed to awaken that power in those deemed worthy. But there's a cost."
"What kind of cost?" Emma asked.
Kael's expression darkened. "The more you awaken, the more the shadows will come for you. The Reavers you fought are just the beginning."
Later that night, Allen stood on the balcony of their room, staring out at the starry sky. Kael's warning echoed in his mind.
"You're awake too?" Emma's voice broke his thoughts. She joined him, leaning against the railing.
Allen nodded. "Kael's right. I need to get stronger, fast. But this path what if it's too dangerous?"
Emma placed a hand on his arm. "You don't have to do this alone. I am here for you, I will do my best to help you"
Allen looked at her, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "Thanks, Emma."
As they stood there, the System chimed softly.
