chapter 10
10 – Dark Red Gate (1)
people, nature and buildings.
What these three have in common is that they are equal under sunlight.
The warm sunlight of spring illuminated all creatures equally under the sky.
A clear sky without a single cloud and a peaceful land without a single wind announced the arrival of a new season.
Even the birds hiding among the trees were singing about spring.
From the rooftop where you can see the beautiful scenery at a glance.
I took a deep breath and said.
“It’s perfect weather for sleeping.”
If it wasn’t for the cigarette in his mouth, he would be lying down and sleeping right away.
“Lazy Sacher.”
On one side of the roof, a familiar voice pierced my ears.
Brown wavy hair and red eyes.
Distinct features with a slightly sharp impression.
It was Luen.
She ate her sandwich gracefully and didn’t even look at me.
“no. Satchel is diligent. You smoke like that until after the picnic. Yum.”
Next to him, Shunika was also biting into a sandwich and talking.
Laying down a mat on the roof and having lunch is a picnic.
It is clear that this guy is also being overworked in the undergraduate school.
This morning, Shunika suddenly proposed to have lunch on the roof.
The opinion was that the weather was so nice that they wanted to create an atmosphere for a picnic.
The three of us went up to the rooftop with mats and food.
Thanks to you, I missed two of the pleasures of life today.
One was to have time to think while smoking alone, and the other was to eat learning.
The former is tolerable, but the latter is still angry.
A day without learning was like a dead day.
“Shunika. Don’t you think you took away my smoking time with a picnic?”
I put on my pipe and went towards them.
Schnika didn’t seem to be interested in what I was saying, and was making a happy expression while eating the sandwich.
“Yum. Satchel says she doesn’t want to go on a picnic, but actually wants to go on a picnic more than anyone else.”
“dog sound! It was the most unpleasant bullsh*t I’ve heard this year.”
“Hi-Hi. Satchel, without us, there is no one to eat.”
“Shunika. That’s a really insulting delusion. Please correct me.”
Schunika turned her head and gave me a sandwich with a smirk.
“Would you like a sandwich?”
“It tastes awful!”
“It was made by my mother.”
“Ordinary sandwiches are not tasty! This looks really delicious. Somehow, the toppings were different. different from the color Are there any more? I’ve been hungry since before.”
I was sitting on a mat and eating a sandwich militantly.
Out of the blue, he said let’s eat a boxed lunch, but he had a plan… .
And unlike the jokes, the sandwiches were really delicious.
I’ve felt it before, but Shunika’s mother is really good at making these types of lunchboxes.
There was a reason she sang about wanting to go on a picnic every day.
“Aren’t you going to take the test? It’s a midterm exam.”
It seems like it was only yesterday that the semester started, but the semester is already entering its midterms.
The library was crowded with students every day, and older students often visited the gymnasium for practice.
Of course, the alchemy shop wasn’t doing well either.
In this case, should I make something like an elixir that increases concentration?
I feel like I am becoming a merchant rather than a student.
“Yum. done. Classes are concentrated on Mondays and Wednesdays. What about Ruen and Satchel?”
“… it’s over.”
“I had two left today, but I didn’t see them because I overslept. One is from the Faculty of Magic, so you have to see it. What if an F comes out again… .”
“Hi-Hi. It’s like Satchel, it’s like Satchel.”
“Lazy Sacher.”
“It’s not that I’m lazy, it’s that I sleep a lot.”
I threw my tired body onto the empty mat and lay down.
I thought it would be hard, but surprisingly it’s a bit thick, so it’s soft.
It was more comfortable than I thought, so I thought I would fall asleep like this.
The academy was quiet, probably because it was the exam period, and the wind on the rooftop was just right.
Next to me, I could only hear the chattering of my friends eating.
I stayed still with my eyes closed, then suddenly I opened my mouth.
“Hey.”
“ok?”
“How would you feel if your parents suddenly got sick?”
Schnika’s eyes widened at the unexpectedly thrown topic.
Even if Ruen pretended not to flinch, it seemed that he was listening to my story.
“hmm… well? I don’t know because both of my parents have never been sick before and are so active. you see me health is an advantage. This is genetic.”
Certainly, Shunica had good health.
Having known her for over a year, I had no history of hearing that she was hurt or ill somewhere.
If it’s hereditary, then so are the parents.
In particular, I knew Shunika’s father, as I had heard before, was a retired warrior.
I couldn’t imagine right now that the person who was supposed to kill a wild boar was sick with a disease.
I turned my head and looked at Luen.
“I never thought about it.”
… I didn’t even expect it.
Rather, should I be thankful that he answered without ignoring it?
Also, I hadn’t heard anything about Ruen’s parents.
In the first place, Ruen is a person who doesn’t talk much, and he doesn’t have deep conversations like talking about his parents.
However, Luen was studying abroad in Denver like Professor Melin, so maybe her parents are also in Denver… There was only speculation.
“But why all of a sudden? Whose parents are sick?”
“uh. Because my junior’s parents are a bit ill. I care.”
“Are you having a bad time? You can go to church.”
“Even if you go and get treatment, you don’t seem to have seen much effect.”
When not holding services, the church did hospital work to treat citizens for a certain amount.
Since the church near Morphine’s house was small, it was assigned low-level priests who lacked ability, and it was impossible to cure her mother with their divine magic.
Of course, even if there were high-ranking priests, the price was too high and morphine would not have been able to afford it.
After that, the conversation stopped for a while.
I lay down and gazed up at the sky.
The sky looked up from below was always the same.
Similar weather and similar sunshine.
Above was always free and tranquil, as if it had nothing to do with anything that happened on earth.
Is it possible to reverse the relationship?
Couldn’t the sky be painful and the earth peaceful?
Can’t we share a little of the overflowing freedom they’ve enjoyed?
I think I’ve been thinking that way since I was very young.
And I thought that heart would not change no matter how much time and years passed.
After thinking about it for a while, Schnika put something in my mouth.
“Yum. What is this?”
“Hi-Hi. French fries. I made it~”
“It is delicious. Why are there so many sauces?”
“Is it because you dipped it in the sauce?”
“No, why do you pour the sauce on the fries? I have to take a picture.”
“What are you talking about. Since I put French fries in a bowl of sauce, wouldn’t this be too spicy?”
“… It’s stupid.”
After that, I had a few fights with Schnika, and then I gave up.
While eating a sandwich, Ruen added a word at a time when it was time to forget.
I smiled and looked up at the sky.
The sky was still the same.
But now that I see it, I have changed a lot.
Is it my thoughts or the people around me that have changed?
What was certain was that this was the third pleasure of my life, after cigarettes and learning.
* * *
“I’m a senior!! I’m here!!”
It must have been about three days since I had a job at the workshop.
Morphine came to the Alchemy Shop, quickly regaining its light-hearted mood.
Delia, who would be bored without it now, was accompanied by the set.
“Have you come? How was the foxtail?”
“It’s been a while, senpai… !”
“Senior, senior, senior! I bring you very good news!”
I asked, smoking a pipe.
“What?”
“That’s right! Doesn’t that mean that the midterm substitute report that Delia and I co-produced won first place? Since Delia is Professor Bluecliffe’s daughter, our report was publicly reviewed in class, and most of the students gave it the highest rating that day. Isn’t that great? All of this is thanks to you. The gold-like explanations given by seniors at the studio were very helpful.”
“… Take a breath and speak, breathe.”
I think my ears will bleed again.
Why are you curious about this?
What? I hated myself for asking.
Still, it was fortunate that the morphine was bright again.
Even though he talks a lot, this kind of thing suits him more than swearing.
“How is your mother? It’s been about three days since you gave me the potion.”
As if talking casually, he asked a question.
Both of them hesitated slightly at the slightly sensitive matter, but soon Morphine answered in a bright voice.
“You have improved a lot. Thanks to the intermediate stamina potion that my senior lent me, I still walked for more than two days. Thanks again, senior. Payment must be made by this month… ”
“Ah, that’s all right. If it’s been more than two days, are you lying down again now? How are your symptoms?”
“There are no symptoms yet. just lie down I wonder if the symptoms will come back in about four days.”
“hmm… Intermediate potions are just a temporary measure, not a cure… .”
Hearing the morphine’s explanation, he thought for a moment and wiggled his hand on the desk.
A temporary measure is literally a temporary measure.
In the end, what Morphine and her mother needed was a cure.
And in order to create the cure, an accurate diagnosis of the patient was needed.
I’m not sure if I can make a cure even if I diagnose it, but it was a fool to give up without even trying.
I made up my mind and got up from my seat.
“let’s go. Business closes today.”
“yes? Where do you mean you’re going?”
“Where? Morphine is your home. A cure, let’s make that one.”
“… ?”
Morphine was looking at me with a blank expression, as if he didn’t quite understand.
It was the same with Delia, who had a puzzled face.
I laughed for some reason and tousled the hair of the two juniors with both hands.
“Puppy grass, come with me too. It is an extension of the group assignment.”
