My Perfect Apocalyptic Life

Chapter 1 - The End of the World, and the System Finally Arrives

“Swoosh…”

The sound of water gushing from the faucet echoed in Meng Xu’s ears. He cupped a handful of clear water and splashed it on his face, trying to stay as alert as possible.

Raising his head, Meng Xu took a deep breath as he looked at his reflection in the mirror. The face staring back at him in the mirror has sharp eyebrows, bright eyes, a high nose bridge, and a particularly resolute jawline.

The only thing that seemed out of place was the pair of tired eyes, with bloodshot whites.

“Just one week into my internship and I already have to work overtime… What kind of exploitative company is this? It seems like I need to find a way to change my situation.”

Meng Xu couldn’t help but yawn, feeling extremely irritated.

As a recent college graduate, dealing with the so-called “graduation means unemployment” situation, Meng Xu was fortunate to land a job at an obscure internet startup, entering the life of a coder.

On his first day, the company boss was relatively friendly to him.

Who knew that after a week, the capitalist’s true, vile nature would surface?

Overtime, relentless overtime!

The detestable face of the capitalist was clear: think about what value you can bring to the company!

Overtime pay? Yes, but not much.

Meng Xu had just started the job and hadn’t figured out the workflow yet. To earn his first month’s salary, he could only comfort himself with the thought that hard work would pay off.

As long as he was diligent and capable, he believed he would eventually become wealthy.

“Looks like I’ll be sleeping at the office tonight.”

After yawning, Meng Xu gazed out the office building’s window at the bustling world outside, momentarily lost in thought.

Some people were born with a silver spoon in their mouths, while others were destined to toil.

Unfortunately, Meng Xu belonged to the latter.

Since high school, he had been working part-time to support his studies, and now, as an office worker, he believed he was more hardworking than his peers and that his hard work would be rewarded.

But it was all in vain.

Meng Xu felt utterly exhausted, unable to see a future for himself.

Being unable to see the future, in a sense, was also a way of seeing his future.

“Forget it, why think so much? I should sleep. I have to get up early to be exploited again tomorrow.”

With his eyelids battling each other, Meng Xu took a deep breath, drew the curtains, reclined the office chair, draped a jacket over himself, and soon fell into a deep sleep.

“……”

“Wee-woo, wee-woo…”

“……”

【You have activated the Perfect Life System.】

The surrounding noises were a bit loud, making Meng Xu feel groggy and irritated, unable to open his eyes. However, the last sentence he heard suddenly startled him awake, and he opened his eyes wide.

“What was that sound?!”

Meng Xu shot up from his chair, looking around suspiciously to locate the source of the sound.

The voice had been too real.

It felt as if it came from the depths of his soul as if someone were whispering in his ear with clear enunciation, snapping Meng Xu out of his grogginess.

“Oh no, am I having tinnitus?”

Meng Xu felt a pang of fear. His life was already miserable enough, and if he were to develop some illness, he might just lose the will to live.

Seeing this panel, Meng Xu was initially stunned but quickly realized what was happening.

What is this?

This is a system panel!

What’s going on? Have my fortunes turned for the better?!

As a young man who just graduated from college, Meng Xu knew exactly what this was.

This is a system!

It must be that he’d read too many web novels, and now heaven was rewarding him!

Meng Xu’s heart leaped with joy.

Overtime?

To hell with overtime!

Boss?

To hell with the boss!

I’m free now!

At that moment, Meng Xu felt an extreme sense of comfort, as if he had reached the pinnacle of life, and his heart was pounding.

He took a deep breath, calming his excited heart as much as possible, then picked up his phone, which cost just over a thousand yuan, to check the time.

7:03 a.m.

“It’s already seven o’clock. Why hasn’t anyone come to work today?”

Meng Xu was a bit surprised. Normally, by this time, his colleagues would have already arrived, but today, there was no one… Today was Thursday, not a weekend.

Could they all have gone out for Crazy Thursday?

And why is there no signal? Even if the internet is down, it shouldn’t cut off my mobile data, right?

“Maybe they all slept in? Whatever, work doesn’t start until 7:30 anyway.”

Meng Xu yawned, stood up while humming a tune, stretched a bit, and then looked towards the tightly closed curtains. He walked over to them immediately and pulled them open,

“I need to let the sunlight in!”

Meng Xu thought that years from now, he must include this moment in his memoirs. He would write about how the sunlight came in and how his life brightened up!

Oh, how I love this world!

Sunlight streamed through the window, and a beam of light fell directly on Meng Xu’s face.

He closed his eyes, relishing the warm touch, and smiled slightly. But soon, he began to hear strange noises in his ears.

“Hmm?”

Meng Xu raised an eyebrow.

What kind of sound is this?

He opened his eyes and immediately saw a scene that left him utterly astonished.

Outside the window, the streets were drenched in blood, overturned vehicles littered the ground, and severed limbs were everywhere.

What terrified Meng Xu even more were the things wandering the streets!

What the hell? Are those zombies?!

Huh?

System, come out.

Perfect life?

Perfect my foot!

It’s the end of the world!

Without hesitation, Meng Xu closed the curtains again.

Don’t panic. Stay calm. Panicking won’t help.

“Bang! Bang!”

Suddenly, a series of bangs came from the hallway outside the company’s single room.

Meng Xu felt a cold shiver down his spine, grabbed a chair, and quietly approached the office door. He peered through the glass window on the door.

From his field of vision, he saw a woman dressed in a professional OL outfit with a voluptuous figure, twitching irregularly and rhythmically and banging her head against the door of the adjacent office.

His company was relatively poor, so the entire floor was shared with other companies.

Meng Xu recognized her; she seemed to be the niece of the boss from the neighboring company. He had seen her in the elevator after work.

She was quite pretty.

Just as Meng Xu was reminiscing, she suddenly twisted her neck and looked to the side, giving Meng Xu a full view of her face.

Her previously beautiful face was now gone, replaced by a hideous visage with half of the skin torn off, revealing bare bones and a half-missing eyeball!

“Hiss.”

Meng Xu gasped in horror.

At that precise moment, an untimely voice echoed in his ears, accompanied by golden text appearing before his eyes.
