Chapter 13 - The Terrifying Meng Xu
The bright lights caused a stir among the zombies on the street below.
However, Meng Xu’s office was on the fourth floor, and he wasn’t the only one with lights on.
Several rooms were illuminated, either because previous occupants had forgotten to turn off the lights or due to zombies accidentally hitting the switches amidst the chaos.
So, though there were few lit rooms, it wasn’t completely dark.
Meng Xu swept the floor efficiently.
Outside, zombies roamed the street. It was clear that the night was agitating them even more, filling the air with their howls.
Even inside the office building, Meng Xu could occasionally hear the clattering sounds, especially from next door.
The noise was quite annoying.
These zombies were like they were having fits of excitement, with occasional screams mixed in, creating a terrifying atmosphere.
Yet, at this moment, Meng Xu felt more irritated than scared.
“Stop that noise!”
Feeling very annoyed, Meng Xu threw down his broom after sweeping up the last pile of trash, venting his frustration;
“It’s after work hours, even if you are zombies, can’t you have some decency? Turning into a zombie isn’t an excuse to be rude. Can’t you reflect on yourselves and keep it down at night? Don’t you know you’re disturbing the peace?”
【Task completed…】
The system’s notification sounded in Meng Xu’s ears. Without hesitation, he allocated the 1 career experience point to his Leaflet Distributor role.
Although the Intern Clerk role gave Meng Xu a boost in spirit, he felt that agility points were more cost-effective.
More importantly, distributing leaflets didn’t just increase agility but also boosted several other attributes.
It was an all-around enhancement.
Satisfied after completing all this, Meng Xu nodded approvingly.
He drew back the curtains and looked down at the street, which had turned into a hellscape, feeling a surge of emotion.
“This world is truly insane.”
Soon, Meng Xu noticed that in a room on the fifth floor of the building across from his office, three men and two women were frantically waving at him, their faces filled with excitement.
Seeing this, Meng Xu was momentarily stunned, then shook his head.
“What’s the point of waving at me? Do you think I can fly over there?”
With that thought, Meng Xu also waved back at them as a greeting, then sat back down in his chair and stretched comfortably.
“That’s enough for today. Time to sleep!”
…
The following morning, silence enveloped the world.
In the restroom of the office on the eighth floor, Shen Zhaozhao’s hair was disheveled, her eyes bloodshot, and she clutched her phone tightly, looking particularly anxious.
She had not slept a wink the previous night.
Or rather, she had slept, but very poorly—dozing off for a few minutes before abruptly waking up again, worried that zombies might break in.
With such a repetitive state of anxiety, Shen Zhaozhao naturally couldn’t rest well.
Her phone’s battery was down to just 7%, and Shen Zhaozhao kept refreshing the internet, looking at the messages left by netizens.
“No hope; just wait to die, girl.”
“I know you want to be saved, but isn’t this a bit far-fetched? In this environment, someone is allegedly walking around with two zombies handing out leaflets? Ridiculous. What kind of leaflets could he be distributing, ‘How to Tame Zombies’?”
“Forget about her for now; can someone please help me?! I’m safe here, but I have no food left. I don’t want to go out and scavenge!”
“……”
Reading the comments and messages online, Shen Zhaozhao’s face showed a look of despair.
As for her parents?
She didn’t dare make a single call to them.
She feared that their situation might be as dire as hers, and a phone call might attract zombies’ attention, which would be disastrous.
Why did she have such thoughts?
It’s because of the tragedy that occurred in the neighboring office.
Initially, Shen Zhaozhao had no idea there were people in the office next door. Around midnight, a phone suddenly rang next door with a pleasant ringtone.
However, the screams of the phone’s owner were far from pleasant.
They were downright horrifying.
Amidst the chaos, Shen Zhaozhao vaguely heard things like, “XXX, you bastard,” which made her shiver.
Luckily, she had set her phone to silent mode early on; otherwise, she couldn’t imagine what might have happened.
Because of this lesson learned, she dared not send any messages to her parents.
“Sir, care to learn more about legal consultation? Attorney Zhang Wei is extremely adept at handling civil disputes. As zombies, you must encounter some civil disputes since you bite people often. Why not take a leaflet? Remember, Attorney Zhang Wei is a competent lawyer… ah? Oh, sorry, it’s Zhang Wei, the lawyer…”
“If you don’t say anything, I’ll assume you agree! Don’t rush, see how crowded it’s getting. One at a time, please. Don’t break the glass, or I’ll have to use the powerful wrench I just got to crack your heads open.”
“Huh? Cracking your heads open might also involve civil disputes, right? Should I call Attorney Zhang Wei for a consultation? Does this count as a successful leaflet distribution? If so, have I completed my first order? Good point. Let me add him on QQ and ask.”
“……”
The familiar voice reappeared in Shen Zhaozhao’s ears, making her freeze in surprise.
Huh?
He’s back?
Still, distributing leaflets?
And… isn’t this more like a sales pitch than leaflet distribution?
Despite her thoughts, Shen Zhaozhao felt a surge of joy.
His presence meant she could sneak out of the storeroom and grab some supplies.
Although it was very risky, it was worth it.
After all, if this continued, they would just sit and wait for their resources to run out.
Of course, there was another thought that crossed Shen Zhaozhao’s mind.
That was the hope that this seemingly mentally unstable guy outside might actually save her.
Taking a deep breath, Shen Zhaozhao carefully cracked open the bathroom door, just like she did the previous day.
The scene before her was identical to yesterday’s.
Her two colleagues had been fully zombified. They stood in front of the glass wall, ferociously pounding on the glass door, with blood and filth everywhere, creating a foul stench.
Meanwhile, Meng Xu, who was distributing leaflets, stood naturally by the glass door, smiling and introducing the services of ‘Attorney Zhang Wei’s Law Firm’ to the zombies.
However…
Seeing the bloodstains on Meng Xu’s clothes, Shen Zhaozhao couldn’t help but shiver, her heart filled with fear.
Meng Xu held a bloody wrench in his left hand, had two ‘leashes’ tied to his waist, each ending with a zombie, and in his right hand, he held a leaflet for ‘Attorney Zhang Wei’s Law Firm,’ speaking confidently and cheerfully, even more so than the previous day.
This sight made Shen Zhaozhao, who initially wanted to call for help, hesitate.
Even if this lunatic rescued her, wouldn’t she be jumping from the frying pan into the fire?
For a moment, Shen Zhaozhao thought of those apocalyptic novels and shivered, immediately closing the bathroom door again.
Eating sparingly could stretch her resources a bit longer, and the hallway seemed safe.
Once that guy left, she could consider escaping through the bathroom window!
Plus…
The company’s glass walls were quite high-quality.
They hadn’t shattered yet.
